Book excerpt: The present working paper is primarily intended for producer organizations, trade unions, vocational training institutes, extensionists, instructors and relevant public bodies. The document addresses the forest as a work place, safety culture, workplace assessment, accident prevention and management, child labour, gender issues and selected health and safety issues. Reliable statistics on accident and fatality rates in forestry are missing, data available however indicates that forestry is a high-risk occupation. Workplace conditions in forestry are a function of site conditions, climate, weather, terrain and tree characteristics. The fundamentals of accident prevention are reduced hazard exposure and worker safety training. The first is achieved through risk assessments to identify hazards. Workers should be prepared for accidents at all times. Accident analysis is done to identify what occurred, the causes of the accident and how similar accidents might be avoided in future. Child labour is a human-rights issue and relevant to occupational safety and health. Reliable data on child labour in forestry is almost completely absent. Women in forestry can be exposed more often than men to musculoskeletal disorders, respiratory diseases and reproductive disorders due to chemical exposure. Women generally have a working capacity one-third lower than men. Heat stress occurs when the body is unable to dissipate heat to its surroundings. Heat stroke is the most serious health risk posed by heat stress. Risks and hazards associated with NWFPs derive from activities like climbing, cutting with sharp tools, digging and gathering, picking, and long and/or heavy manual transport.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than half the world's population now lives in cities. Creating sustainable, healthy and aesthetic urban environments is therefore a major policy goal and research agenda. This comprehensive handbook provides a global overview of the state of the art and science of urban forestry. It describes the multiple roles and benefits of urban green areas in general and the specific role of trees, including for issues such as air quality, human well-being and stormwater management. It reviews the various stresses experienced by trees in cities and tolerance mechanisms, as well as cultural techniques for either pre-conditioning or alleviating stress after planting. It sets out sound planning, design, species selection, establishment and management of urban trees. It shows that close interactions with the local urban communities who benefit from trees are key to success. By drawing upon international state-of-art knowledge on arboriculture and urban forestry, the book provides a definitive overview of the field and is an essential reference text for students, researchers and practitioners.

This book was released on 2019-03-13 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The general labour and employment laws of many countries do not necessarily take into account the special circumstances of those who work in the agriculture, forestry and fisheries sectors, whereas legislation governing these sectors tends not to integrate appropriate labour standards. This becomes even more of a concern where there is a general weakness in inter-sectoral and inter-institutional coordination mechanisms. This Legislative Study seeks to respond to these challenges by providing guidance on the integration of internationally accepted labour standards into national legislation in the agriculture, forestry and fisheries sectors. It identifies the standards that apply to these sectors and shows how they have been or could be integrated into regulatory frameworks governing organic production and other agricultural commodities, contract farming, pesticide management, forestry, fisheries and other related sectors. The overall aim of the study is to improve relevant regulatory frameworks with regard to the protection of the rights of people who derive their livelihoods in these sectors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the first edition in 1948, Patty’s Industrial Hygiene and Toxicology has become a flagship publication for Wiley. In the course of its nearly six decades in print, it has evolved into a standard reference for the fields of occupational health and toxicology. The volumes on Industrial Hygiene are cornerstone reference works for chemists, engineers, toxicologists, and occupational safety personnel. Since the 5th edition was published, the field of IH has changed with personnel often working for multinational firms, self-employed, at small consulting firms. Their environment has changed and expanded, and thus also the types of information and resources required have changed. The traditional areas of interest to occupational health and safety professionals include anticipation, recognition, evaluation and control of potential hazards. In addition to these, the 6th edition provides information and reliable resources to prepare for natural disasters, exposures to biological agents and potential acts of terrorism.

Book excerpt: Describes a superior model to guide empirical practice improvement projects This unique text provides the academic and clinical healthcare communities with a tested, practical, and successful model (EBPI+) to steer evidence-based practice improvement projects. The model--tested in multiple clinical settings--is distinguished from similar prototypes by its integration of the best EBP and quality/performance improvement principles (QI), resulting in a highly practical and comprehensible model for guiding students' and clinicians' work to improve quality outcomes in healthcare. The book emphasizes the need for collaboration among all stakeholders, particularly those in different disciplines with different perspectives, to provide greater clarity and enhance improvement work in a clinical agency. It features a blueprint for guiding healthcare improvements based on evidence that incorporates potential changes of direction midstream. The book also introduces tools for the evaluation of organizational commitment, stakeholder choice, and sustainability of improvement projects. Section One of the text focuses on the background and development of the original EBPI model, followed by, in Section Two, an elaboration of the components of the new enhanced model, EBPI+. Chapter authors in Section Three describe how they used the components of the EBPI model, discussing lessons learned from its use. This section, connecting the theoretical basis for this work with real-world applications, includes a template that readers can use to facilitate their own projects. The final section investigates future approaches to improvement work. Comprehensive appendices provide useful tools for students and clinicians to use in developing, implementing, and evaluating any EBPI+ projects. Key Features: Describes a practical and successful model incorporating the best of EBP and QI approaches (EPBI+) for improving quality outcomes in healthcare Incorporates a strong focus on how to determine and engage project stakeholders and provides tools for effective decision making Delineates specific methods to develop protocols for a small test of change prior to larger pilot studies Delivers approaches/strategies for monitoring and evaluating sustainability Discusses how to assess organizational commitment and conduct stakeholder analyses Creates examples that use each component of EBPI+ as a template for readers Emphasizes the "how to" of implementation more than other competitive models
