Book Synopsis State Teacher Policy Yearbook, 2009. Washington by : National Council on Teacher Quality
Download or read book State Teacher Policy Yearbook, 2009. Washington written by National Council on Teacher Quality and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Washington edition of the National Council on Teacher Quality's (NCTQ's) 2009 "State Teacher Policy Yearbook" is the third annual look at state policies impacting the teaching profession. It is hoped that this report will help focus attention on areas where state policymakers can make changes that will have a positive impact on teacher quality and student achievement. The 2009 "Yearbook" presents a comprehensive analysis of state teacher policies. This evaluation is organized in five areas encompassing 33 goals. Broadly, these goals examine the impact of state policy on: (1) delivering well-prepared teachers; (2) expanding the teaching pool; (3) identifying effective teachers; (4) retaining those deemed effective; and (5) exiting those deemed ineffective. Washington has an overall "Yearbook" grade of D+ for 2009. Washington's major policy strengths include: (1) Articulates consequences for teachers with unsatisfactory evaluations; (2) Requires annual evaluations for all teachers; and (3) Maintains full authority to approve teacher preparation programs. Washington's major policy weaknesses include: (1) Awards tenure virtually automatically; (2) Fails to make evidence of student learning the preponderant criterion in teacher evaluations; (3) Lacks an efficient termination process for ineffective teachers; (4) Allows middle school teachers to teach on a K-8 generalist license; and (5) Does not ensure that middle school teachers are prepared to teach grade-level content. Goals for each area are appended. (Contains 124 figures.) [For the national summary, see ED511872.].

Book excerpt: This fourth edition of the first true textbook on the death penalty engages the reader with a full account of the arguments and issues surrounding capital punishment. The book begins with the history of the death penalty from colonial to modern times, and then examines the moral and legal arguments for and against capital punishment. It also provides an overview of major Supreme Court decisions and describes the legal process behind the death penalty. In addressing these issues, the author reviews recent developments in death penalty law and procedure, including ramifications of newer case law, such as that regarding using lethal injection as a method of execution. The author’s motivation has been to understand what motivates the "deathquest" of the American people, leading a large percentage of the public to support the death penalty. The book will educate readers so that whatever their death penalty opinions are, they are informed ones. Comprehensive, unbiased review of developments in death penalty law and procedure, including new case law on death-eligible crimes and execution by lethal injection Current data on costs, miscarriages of justice, discriminatory application, religion, and death penalty public opinion Analysis of new research regarding the effectiveness of the death penalty in terms of deterrence, retribution, and incapacitation

Book excerpt: This encyclopedia contains 50 thorough profiles of the most numerically significant immigrant groups now making their homes in the United States, telling the story of our newest immigrants and introducing them to their fellow Americans. One of the main reasons the United States has evolved so quickly and radically in the last 100 years is the large number of ethnically diverse immigrants that have become part of its population. People from every area of the world have come to America in an effort to realize their dreams of more opportunity and better lives, either for themselves or for their children. This book provides a fascinating picture of the lives of immigrants from 50 countries who have contributed substantially to the diversity of the United States, exploring all aspects of the immigrants' lives in the old world as well as the new. Each essay explains why these people have come to the United States, how they have adjusted to and integrated into American society, and what portends for their future. Accounts of the experiences of the second generation and the effects of relations between the United States and the sending country round out these unusually rich and demographically detailed portraits.
Book Synopsis Supporting and Educating Traumatized Students by : Eric Rossen Ph.D.

This book was released on 2012-10-04 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traumatic or adverse experiences are pervasive among school-aged children and youth. Trauma undermines students' ability to learn, form relationships, and manage their feelings and behavior. School-based professionals working with traumatized students are often unaware of their complex needs or how to meet them within the hours of the typical school day. Combining knowledge of the cognitive and behavioral effects of trauma, evidence-based interventions, educational best practices, and the experiences of veteran educators, Supporting and Educating Traumatized Students: A Guide for School-Based Professionals presents a new framework for assisting students with a history of trauma. Designed specifically for busy educators who work with traumatized students daily, this volume brings together practitioners, researchers, and other experts with backgrounds in education, school psychology, school nursing, school social work, school counseling, school administration, clinical psychology, resilience, and trauma studies to examine the impacts of numerous traumatic experiences on school-aged children and youth. The book provides practical, effective, and implementable strategies and resources for adapting and differentiating instruction, modifying the classroom and school environments, and building competency for students affected by trauma. Chapters offer techniques and strategies designed for all types of educational environments and in the context of multiple potential sources of trauma. Supporting and Educating Traumatized Students is an essential resource for classroom teachers and for practicing school-based professionals. It is also useful for courses that address crisis, trauma, and education across a broad spectrum of specializations, including school social work, education, psychology, counseling, and school administration.
