This book was released on 2013-09-01 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multi-sensor information fusion theory concerns the environmental perception activities to combine data from multiple sensory resources. Humans, as any other animals, gather information from the environment around them using different biological sensors. Combining them allows structuring the decisions and actions when interacting with the environment. Under disaster conditions, effective mult-robot information sensor fusion can yield a better situation awareness to support the collective decision-making. Mobile robots can gather information from the environment by combining data from different sensors as a way to organize decisions and augment human perception. The is especially useful to retrieve contextual environmental information in catastrophic incidents where human perception may be limited (e.g., lack of visibility). To that end, this work proposes a specific configuration of sensors assembled in a mobile robot, which can be used as a proof of concept to measure important environmental variables in an urban search and rescue (USAR) mission, such as toxic gas density, temperature gradient and smoke particles density. This data is processed through a support vector machine classifier with the purpose of detecting relevant contexts in the course of the mission. The outcome provided by the experiments conducted with TraxBot and Pioneer-3DX robots under the Robot Operating System framework opens the door for new multi-robot applications on USAR scenarios. This work was developed within the CHOPIN research project which aims at exploiting the cooperation between human and robotic teams in catastrophic accidents.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the terahertz antenna technology towards implementation of compact, consistent and cheap terahertz sources, as well as the high sensitivity terahertz detectors. The terahertz EM band provides a transition between the electronic and the photonic regions thus adopting important characteristics from these regimes. These characteristics, along with the progress in semiconductor technology, have enabled researchers to exploit hitherto unexplored domains including satellite communication, bio-medical imaging, and security systems. The advances in new materials and nanostructures such as graphene will be helpful in miniaturization of antenna technology while simultaneously maintaining the desired output levels. Terahertz antenna characterization of bandwidth, impedance, polarization, etc. has not yet been methodically structured and it continues to be a major research challenge. This book addresses these issues besides including the advances of terahertz technology in space applications worldwide, along with possibilities of using this technology in deep space networks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents an examination of the middleware that can be used to configure and operate heterogeneous node platforms and sensor networks. The middleware requirements for a range of application scenarios are compared and analysed. The text then defines middleware architecture that has been integrated in an approach demonstrated live in a refinery. Features: presents a thorough introduction to the major concepts behind wireless sensor networks (WSNs); reviews the various application scenarios and existing middleware solutions for WSNs; discusses the middleware mechanisms necessary for heterogeneous WSNs; provides a detailed examination of platform-agnostic middleware architecture, including important implementation details; investigates the programming paradigms for WSNs, and for heterogeneous sensor networks in general; describes the results of extensive experimentation and testing, demonstrating that the generic architecture is viable for implementation on multiple platforms.
