Book excerpt: The topic of the CVIII session of the Ecole de Physique des Houches, held in July 2017, was Effective Field Theory in Particle Physics and Cosmology. Effective Field Theory (EFT) is a general method for describing quantum systems with multiple length scales in a tractable fashion. It allows to perform precise calculations in established models (such as the Standard Models of particle physics and cosmology), as well as to concisely parametrise possible effects from physics beyond the Standard Models. The goal of this school was to offer a broad introduction to the foundations and modern applications of Effective Field Theory in many of its incarnations. This is all the more important as there are preciously few textbooks covering the subject, none of them in a complete way. In this book, the lecturers present the concepts in a pedagogical way so that readers can adapt some of the latest developments to their own problems. The chapters cover almost all the lectures given at the school and will serve as an introduction to the topic and as a reference manual to students and researchers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a string-theoretic approach to new ideas in particle physics, also known as Physics Beyond the Standard Model, and to cosmology. The concept of Naturalness and its apparent violation by the low electroweak scale and the small cosmological constant is emphasized. It is shown that string theory, through its multitude of solutions, known as the landscape, offers a partial resolution to these naturalness problems as well as suggesting more speculative possibilities like that of a multiverse. The book is based on a one-semester course, as such, it has a pedagogical approach, is self-contained and includes many exercises with solutions. Notably, the basics of string theory are introduced as part of the lectures. These notes are aimed at graduate students with a solid background in quantum field theory, as well as at young researchers from theoretical particle physics to mathematical physics. This text also benefits students who are in the process of studying string theory at a deeper level. In this case, the volume serves as additional reading beyond a formal string theory course.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a problem-oriented introduction to the main ideas, methods, and problems needed to form a basic understanding of the theory of strong interactions. Each section contains solid but concise technical foundations to key concepts of the theory, and the level of rigor is appropriate for readers with a background in physics (rather than mathematics). It begins with a foundational introduction to topics including SU(N) group, hadrons and effective SU(3) symmetric flavor lagrangians, constituent quarks in hadrons, quarks and gluons as fundamental fields. It then discusses Quantum chromodynamics as a gauge field theory, functional integration, and Wilson lines and loops, before moving on to discuss gauge–fixing and Faddeev – Popov ghosts, Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin symmetry, and lattice methods. It concludes with a discussion on the anomalies and the strong CP problem, effective action, chiral perturbation theory, deep inelastic scattering, and derivation and solution of the Dokshitzer - Gribov - Lipatov - Altarelli - Parisi equations. Constructed as a one-term course on strong interactions for advanced students, it will be a useful self-study guide for graduate and PhD students of high energy physics, Quantum Chromodynamics, and the Standard Model. Features Covers both basic introductory topics, in addition to more advanced content. Accompanied by over 200 problems starting from group algebra to the derivation of Migdal-Makeenko equations, Kim - Shifman - Vainshtein - Zakharov axion, and gluon + gluon to Higgs cross section, etc. Solutions are incorporated into the chapters to test understanding.

Book excerpt: After an extensive overview of the Standard Model and of the theory and phenomenology of Supersymmetry, this book describes the recent development of the ATLAS Particle Flow algorithm, a hadronic reconstruction technique aiming at enhancing the sensitivity of the experiment to new physics through the combination of the information from different ATLAS sub-detectors. The first ever ATLAS strong SUSY search exploiting this technique is also described, reporting the results and exclusion limits obtained using the complete proton-proton collision dataset recorded by the ATLAS experiment during the second Run of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).

These include results of original investigations dedicated to very high multiplicity processes, collective phenomena in quark gluon plasma, correlator analyses, polarization effects, and pion gas condensation, among others. The greater part of the material is devoted to basic technical aspects of the NICA/MPD project. Essential attention is paid to predictions of the multiperipheral model, perturbative QCD, physics of small x, and fractal analysis and statistical physics approaches to multiple production. The book is an important reference for physicists working in elementary particle physics. It is also a suitable read for undergraduate students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hierarchy Problem is arguably the most important guiding principle concerning the extension to high-energy scales of the Standard Model (SM) of Fundamental Interactions. Every scenario for addressing this issue unavoidably predicts new physics in the TeV energy range, which is currently being probed directly by the LHC experimental program. Among the possible solutions to the Hierarchy Problem, the scenario of a composite Higgs boson is a very simple idea and a rather plausible picture has emerged over the years by combining the following ingredients: First, the Higgs must be a (pseudo-) Nambu-Goldstone boson, rather than a generic hadron of the new strong sector. Second, through the so-called ‘partial compositeness’, SM particles mix with strong sector resonances with suitable quantum numbers, so that they become a linear combination of elementary and composite degrees of freedom. Recently, general descriptions of the Composite Higgs Scenario were developed which successfully capture the relevant features of this theoretical framework in a largely model-independent way. The present book provides a concise and illustrative introduction to the subject for a broad audience of graduate students and non-specialist researchers in the fields of particle, nuclear and gravitational physics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is written by the ATLAS Collaboration at CERN's Large Hadron Collider (LHC), to document and reflect on its more than 25 years of history. It covers all aspects of this global science project at the forefront of particle physics. The historical part recalls first the early stages of discussions in the community leading to the formation of the collaboration in 1992. In a unique approach, the second part documents the evolution from early detector concepts to the final instrument, covering the technical, financial and human aspects. This includes the phases of construction of detector components in the various institutes around the world as well as their installation and commissioning in the underground cavern at CERN.An important part is devoted to the operation of the whole experiment. The book highlights the capabilities and physics accomplishments so far, including the Higgs boson discovery (jointly announced with CMS). It features the various aspects of a broad spectrum of activities needed to arrive at the physics results. The book includes also an outlook to the detector upgrade activities preparing the experiment for the high-luminosity LHC phase of the next decades. Last but not least, it reveals the human aspects of the large ATLAS community working together pursuing common physics goals. The book is aimed at a broad readership with interest in large science projects and their history, as well as in the human endeavour of a worldwide collaboration.
