Book excerpt: This year marks the eighth annual ASAP workshop, which is sponsored jointly by the DARPA Advanced and Tactical Technology Offices, the Navy AEGIS and E2C Program Offices, the Office of Naval Research and the NAVSEA Advanced Systems and Technology Office. This year, the first IEEE Sensor Array and Multichannel (SAM) Signal Processing Workshop in nearby Cambridge, Massachusetts will follow the ASAP workshop on 16-17 March 2000. This unique pairing of ASAP with SAM will provide an unparalleled opportunity for the adaptive sensor array processing community, combining ASAP's focus on state-of-the-art signal processing advances for military systems with the broader international scope and strong academic participation of the IEEE SAM workshop. As this workshop has evolved over its eight-year history, a common theme has been to highlight the similarity of adaptive sensor processing techniques for various disciplines. The ASAP forum has provided researchers from academia, government, and industry the opportunity to discuss common problems and develop ideas and solutions related to how these diverse technologies can be applied to national defense interests. This year's workshop will continue to stress the strong coupling between government, industry, and academia. A key theme will be the cross-fertilization of ideas between the ASAP and SAM participants to provide new areas of exploration and accelerate technological advances.

Book excerpt: The Square Kilometre Array (SKA) Project is a global project to design and c- struct a revolutionary new radio telescope with of order 1 million square meters of collecting area in the wavelength range from3mto1cm.It will have two - ders of magnitude greater sensitivity than current telescopes and an unprecedented large instantaneous ?eld-of-view. These capabilities will ensure the SKA will play a leading role in solving the major astrophysical and cosmological questions of the day (see the science case at www.skatelescope.org/pages/page astronom.htm). The SKA will complement major ground- and space-based astronomical facilities under construction or planned in other parts of the electromagnetic spectrum (e.g. ALMA, JWST, ELT, XEUS,...). The current schedule for the SKA foresees a decision on the SKA site in 2006, a decisiononthedesignconceptin2009,constructionofthe?rstphase(international path?nder)from2010to2013,andconstructionofthefullarrayfrom2014to2020. The cost is estimated to be about 1000 M . TheSKAProjectcurrentlyinvolves45institutesin17countries,manyofwhich are involved in nationally- or regionally-funded state-of-the-art technical devel- ments being pursued ahead of the 2009 selection of design concept. This Special Issue of Experimental Astronomy provides a snapshot of SKA engineering act- ity around the world, and is based on presentations made at the SKA meeting in Penticton,BC,CanadainJuly2004.Topicscoveredincludeantennaconcepts,so- ware, signal transport and processing, radio frequency interference mitigation, and reports on related technologies in other radio telescopes now under construction. Book excerpt: Support Vector Machines (SVM) were introduced in the early 90's as a novel nonlinear solution for classification and regression tasks. These techniques have been proved to have superior performances in a large variety of real world applications due to their generalization abilities and robustness against noise and interferences. This book introduces a set of novel techniques based on SVM that are applied to antenna array processing and electromagnetics. In particular, it introduces methods for linear and nonlinear beamforming and parameter design for arrays and electromagnetic applications.

This book was released on 2010 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this thesis, several important aspects of cooperative wireless multiuser networks are investigated. The focus lies on coherent two-hop relaying networks where several amplify-and-forward (AF) relays assist the communication between multiple source-destination pairs. First, the impact of local oscillator (LO) imperfections and I/Q imbalance at the relays on two-hop relaying is investigated. A special focus lies on the comparison between frequency division duplexing (FDD) and time division duplexing (TDD) relays. Based on the observation that the direction in which a channel between two wireless nodes is measured has an impact on the estimate, phase synchronization requirements for coherent relaying networks are then found. Several channel estimation protocols that differ in the direction in which the single-hop channels are measured are furthermore identi'ed and their performance is compared. Next, a very simple phase synchronization scheme is presented that provides a set of relays with a common LO phase. Two coherent beamforming schemes, namely multiuser zero-forcing (MUZF) and multiuser minimum mean squared error (MMSE) relaying, are then investigated. Finally, a real-world demonstrator for distributed wireless communication networks (called RACooN Lab) is presented. It was used to implement coherent cooperative communication schemes on a practical two-hop relaying network.
