The concept of adaptation is emphasized in the Adaptation in Wireless Communications Series through a unified framework across all layers of the wireless protocol stack ranging from the physical layer to the application layer, and from cellular systems to next-generation wireless networks. This specific volume, Adaptive Signal Processing in Wireless Communications is devoted to adaptation in the physical layer. It gives an in-depth survey of adaptive signal processing techniques used in current and future generations of wireless communication systems. Featuring the work of leading international experts, it covers adaptive channel modeling, identification and equalization, adaptive modulation and coding, adaptive multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) systems, and cooperative diversity. It also addresses other important aspects of adaptation in wireless communications such as hardware implementation, reconfigurable processing, and cognitive radio. A second volume in the series, Adaptation and Cross-layer Design in Wireless Networks(cat no.46039) is devoted to adaptation in the data link, network, and application layers.

Book excerpt: The aim of this thesis is to introduce a non-stationary model for the scattering in mobile-to-mobile channels. Due to the evolution of wireless technology, fixed-to-mobile communications systems are nowadays complemented by mobile-to-mobile communications systems. In the vehicular sector, mobile-to-mobile communications systems are used to enable intelligent transportation systems. Such systems aim to make transportation safer and more efficient by distributing sensor information among the cars. In the aeronautical sector, mobile-to-mobile communications systems will be used, for example, to exchange position, altitude, speed, and heading data between aircraft during flight thus allowing for a reduced separation between them. Hence, these systems are necessary to further increase the air traffic density.

Book excerpt: Support Vector Machines (SVM) were introduced in the early 90's as a novel nonlinear solution for classification and regression tasks. These techniques have been proved to have superior performances in a large variety of real world applications due to their generalization abilities and robustness against noise and interferences. This book introduces a set of novel techniques based on SVM that are applied to antenna array processing and electromagnetics. In particular, it introduces methods for linear and nonlinear beamforming and parameter design for arrays and electromagnetic applications.

Book excerpt: Abstract: From a signal processing for communications perspective, three fundamental transceiver design components are the channel precoder, the channel estimator, and the channel equalizer. The optimal design of these blocks is typically formulated as an optimization problem with a certain objective function, and a given constraint set. However, besides the objective function and the constraint set, their optimal design crucially depends upon the adopted system model and the assumed system state. While, optimization under a perfect knowledge of these underlying parameters (system model and state) is relatively straight forward and well explored, the optimization under their imperfect (partial or uncertain) knowledge is more involved and cumbersome. Intuitively, the central question that arises here is: should we fully trust the available imperfect knowledge of the underlying parameters, should we just ignore it, or should we go for an “intermediate” approach? This thesis deals with three crucial transceiver design problems from a signal processing for communications perspective, and attempts to answer the fundamental question of how to handle the presence of uncertainty about the design parameters in the respective optimization problem formulations.

This is another book – among the myriads – dealing with wireless communications. The reader might be aware: this topic is really among bestsellers in technology – bestsellers in technology itself and that in technical literature. Communications is one of the leading techniques in information society and mobile/wireless communications is one among the (maybe not more than two with optics the second) leading techniques in communications. Development of wireless communications was and is really spec- cular in the last decade of the 20th and first decade of the 21st century. Such topics as MIMO, wireless networking, security in the technological field, new business models in the service providing field, various applications in the users’ side, to mention a few only, were undergoing an unprecedented evolution. So it is not surprising that the number of conferences and the number of books in this field grows and grows, in a nearly unbounded way.

Book excerpt: Peak signal power is an important factor in the implementation of multicarrier (MC) modulation schemes, like OFDM, in wireless and wireline communication systems. This 2007 book describes tools necessary for analyzing and controlling the peak-to-average power ratio in MC systems, and how these techniques are applied in practical designs. The author starts with an overview of multicarrier signals and basic tools and algorithms, before discussing properties of MC signals in detail: discrete and continuous maxima; statistical distribution of peak power; codes with constant peak-to-average power ratio are all covered, concluding with methods to decrease peak power in MC systems. Current knowledge, problems, methods and definitions are summarized using rigorous mathematics, with an overview of the tools for the engineer. The book is aimed at graduate students and researchers in electrical engineering, computer science and applied mathematics, and practitioners in the telecommunications industry.

Book excerpt: Covering everything from signal processing algorithms to integrated circuit design, this complete guide to digital front-end is invaluable for professional engineers and researchers in the fields of signal processing, wireless communication and circuit design. Showing how theory is translated into practical technology, it covers all the relevant standards and gives readers the ideal design methodology to manage a rapidly increasing range of applications. Step-by-step information for designing practical systems is provided, with a systematic presentation of theory, principles, algorithms, standards and implementation. Design trade-offs are also included, as are practical implementation examples from real-world systems. A broad range of topics is covered, including digital pre-distortion (DPD), digital up-conversion (DUC), digital down-conversion (DDC) and DC-offset calibration. Other important areas discussed are peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) reduction, crest factor reduction (CFR), pulse-shaping, image rejection, digital mixing, delay/gain/imbalance compensation, error correction, noise-shaping, numerical controlled oscillator (NCO) and various diversity methods.
