Book Synopsis Optimization of a Low Heat Load Turbine Inlet Vane by : Jamie J. Johnson

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Often there is a distinction between the design of turbomachinery airfoils for aerodynamic performance and durability. However, future aero-engine systems require ever increasing levels of turbine inlet temperature causing the durability and reliability of components to be an ever more important design concern. As a result, the need to incorporate heat transfer predictions into traditional aerodynamic design and optimization systems presents itself. Here, an effort to design an airfoil with both acceptable aerodynamics and minimized heat load is reported. First, a Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) flow solver was validated over different flow regimes as well as varying boundary conditions against extensive data available in literature. Next, a nominal turbine inlet vane was tested experimentally for unsteady heat load measurements in a linear cascade. The tests were performed in a reflected shock tunnel to validate the flow solver further at the current experimental conditions, and special attention was paid to leading edge and suction side heat-flux characteristics. The nominal airfoil geometry was then redesigned for minimum heat load by means of both design practice and two types of optimization algorithms. Finally, the new airfoil was tested experimentally and unsteady heat load trends were compared to design levels as well as the nominal vane counterpart. Results indicate an appreciable reduction in heat load relative to the original vane. Thus, it is a credible proposition to design turbine airfoils for aero-performance and durability concurrently.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Currently, the use of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) solutions is considered as the state-of-the-art in the modeling of unsteady nonlinear flow physics and offers an early and improved understanding of air vehicle aerodynamics and stability and control characteristics. This Special Issue covers recent computational efforts on simulation of aerospace vehicles including fighter aircraft, rotorcraft, propeller driven vehicles, unmanned vehicle, projectiles, and air drop configurations. The complex flow physics of these configurations pose significant challenges in CFD modeling. Some of these challenges include prediction of vortical flows and shock waves, rapid maneuvering aircraft with fast moving control surfaces, and interactions between propellers and wing, fluid and structure, boundary layer and shock waves. Additional topic of interest in this Special Issue is the use of CFD tools in aircraft design and flight mechanics. The problem with these applications is the computational cost involved, particularly if this is viewed as a brute-force calculation of vehicle’s aerodynamics through its flight envelope. To make progress in routinely using of CFD in aircraft design, methods based on sampling, model updating and system identification should be considered.

This book was released on 2014-12-23 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) studies the flow motion in a discretized space. Its basic scale resolved is the mesh size and time step. The CFD algorithm can be constructed through a direct modeling of flow motion in such a space. This book presents the principle of direct modeling for the CFD algorithm development, and the construction unified gas-kinetic scheme (UGKS). The UGKS accurately captures the gas evolution from rarefied to continuum flows. Numerically it provides a continuous spectrum of governing equation in the whole flow regimes.

Book Synopsis Statistical Theory and Modeling for Turbulent Flows by : P. A. Durbin
Download or read book Statistical Theory and Modeling for Turbulent Flows written by P. A. Durbin and published by Wiley-Blackwell. This book was released on 2001-03-12 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most natural and industrial flows are turbulent. The atmosphere and oceans, automobile and aircraft engines, all provide examples of this ubiquitous phenomenon. In recent years, turbulence has become a very lively area of scientific research and application, and this work offers a grounding in the subject of turbulence, developing both the physical insight and the mathematical framework needed to express the theory. Providing a solid foundation in the key topics in turbulence, this valuable reference resource enables the reader to become a knowledgeable developer of predictive tools. This central and broad ranging topic would be of interest to graduate students in a broad range of subjects, including aeronautical and mechanical engineering, applied mathematics and the physical sciences. The accompanying solutions manual to the text also makes this a valuable teaching tool for lecturers and for practising engineers and scientists in computational and experimental and experimental fluid dynamics.
