Download or read book Le Football written by Russ Crawford and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2016-08-01 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are two kinds of football in France. American football was first played in France in 1909 during the cruise of the Great White Fleet. Then, during World War I, the American military shipped footballs, helmets, and shoulder pads alongside rifles and ammunition to the western front. A 1938 tour of two teams lead by Jim Crowley of Fordham University maintained the game until World War II, when the arrival of millions of young Americans in France motivated the U.S. military to sponsor several bowl games. During the 1950s and 1960s, when the United States occupied bases in France during the Cold War, American soldiers, sailors, and airmen played more than a thousand football games. When France withdrew from NATO, however, American bases were forced to close, leaving American football without a natural home on Gallic shores. In the 1970s American college and semi-pro teams tried once more to generate interest in the game among French nationals through a series of tours, but until a French physical education instructor vacationed in Colorado and brought equipment back to France, there was little local enthusiasm for the sport. On the back of that vacation, and from one team in Paris, organized American football in France grew to more than 215 teams with more than 22,000 active players today. Le Football tackles the struggles and successes of American football in France and discusses how, unlike baseball and basketball, football has never been an overt instrument of American cultural influence. Russ Crawford keeps the chains moving as he shows how the modern, homegrown sport developed largely independent of American encouragement into a small but successful culture.

Book excerpt: This collection of themes and versions is intended for use by English-speaking students at universities in Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom. The 120 texts, which mark out four distinct levels, can be used in the second, third and fourth years of Canadian universities; the simpler ones are suitable for young adults who have completed four or five years of French in high school and one year at university, or the equivalent. All the texts date from the 20th century or the first years of the 21st. Most are excerpts from novels, stories and plays, but print media and literary theory are also represented in this collection; excerpts from great authors alongside excerpts from detective novels and spy novels; Canadian authors have their place alongside American, British and Irish authors; the versions come not only from French texts but also from Quebec, French-Canadian or Haitian texts; many of the authors chosen are women.

Book Synopsis The Routledge Companion to Gender and Sexuality in Comic Book Studies by : Frederick Luis Aldama
Download or read book The Routledge Companion to Gender and Sexuality in Comic Book Studies written by Frederick Luis Aldama and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-08-17 with total page 1007 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Routledge Companion to Gender and Sexuality in Comic Book Studies is a comprehensive, global, and interdisciplinary examination of the essential relationship between Gender, Sexuality, Comics, and Graphic Novels. A diverse range of international and interdisciplinary scholars take a closer look at how gender and sexuality have been essential in the evolution of comics, and how gender and sexuality in comics demand that we re-frame and re-view comics history. Chapters cover a wide array of intersectional topics including Queer Underground and Alternative comics, Feminist Autobiography, re-drawing disability, Latina testimony, and re-evaluating the critical whiteness and masculinity of superheroes in this first truly global reference text to gender and sexuality in comics. Comics have always been an important place for the radical exploration of feminist and non-binary sexualities and identities, and the growth of non-normative comic book traditions as a field of inquiry makes this an essential text for upper-level undergraduates, postgraduates, and researchers studying Comics Studies, Women’s and Gender Studies, Literary Studies, and Cultural Studies.

Book excerpt: Exploring the depths of human nature in the light of biblical teaching, the author carves a straight path through the tangled undergrowth of Greek Gnosticism that has infiltrated the Church today. Startling in its simplicity, this book takes the reader to the core of the problem, clearly outlining the issues at stake and dealing with them uncompromisingly. Are children to blame for their parents' sin? Why does man sin? Does a Christian have a dual nature? Are we born bad? Does our nature compel us to commit certain actions, whether bad or good? What is the relationship between a twentieth-century Christian and Adam? Does God see Jesus when He looks at the Church? What is the truth regarding unconditional eternal security? Can a Christian be lost? Answering these questions and many others purely from the Bible, the author brings light and hope on this most misunderstood of all subjects - the nature of man.
