This book was released on 2004-11-30 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All over the world countries struggle with water stress. Problems vary from water scarcity and a degrading water quality, to floods and a rising sea level due to climate change. The European Union adopted a Water Framework Directive to improve the sustainability of water management in its member states. Water management should be coordinated at the level of river basins as a whole. Interests of various user groups should be better represented. River basin visions should take into account the impact of all human activities on the status of the resource. Water legislation needs streamlining and more focus on its implementation. The European Union advocates regulating water prices by charging the costs of water services on the basis of full cost recovery and the polluter pays principle. This book examines the development of water management in the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Spain, Italy and Switzerland. It is based on the European research project EUWARENESS. The authors apply a theoretical framework for the analysis of institutional regimes, water governance and property rights. The evolution of national water resource regimes is described over a period of almost 200 years (1800-2000). The long-term perspective enables the reader to see the conditions under which regime transformation and paradigm change are made possible. The book also includes a critical analysis of policy making by the European Union, and a comparative review and analysis of regime development in the six countries involved. This book is followed by another volume published with Kluwer Academic Publishers on "Integrated Governance and Water Basin Management", edited by Hans Bressers and Stefan Kuks.

Book excerpt: Pulp and Paper Industry: Emerging Waste Water Treatment Technologies is the first book which comprehensively reviews this topic. Over the past decade, pulp and paper companies have continued to focus on minimizing fresh water use and effluent discharges as part of their move towards sustainable operating practices. Three stages—basic conservation, water reuse and water recycling—provide a systematic approach to water resource management. Implementing these stages requires increased financial investment and better utilization of water resources. The ultimate goal for pulp and paper companies is to have effluent-free factories with no negative environmental impact. The traditional water treatment technologies that are used in paper mills are not able to remove recalcitrant contaminants. Therefore, advanced water treatment technologies are being included in industrial wastewater treatment chains aiming to either improve water biodegradability or its final quality. This book discusses various measures being adopted by the pulp and paper industry to reduce water consumption and treatment techniques to treat wastewater to recover it for reuse. The book also examines the emerging technologies for treatment of effluents and presents examples of full-scale installations. - Provides thorough and in-depth coverage of advanced treatment technologies which will benefit the industry personnel, pulp manufacturers, researchers and advanced students - Presents new treatment strategies to improve water reuse and fulfill the legislation in force regarding wastewater discharge - Presents viable solutions for pulp and paper manufacturers in terms of wastewater treatment - Presents examples of full-scale installations to help motivate mill personnel to incorporate new technologies

Book excerpt: Reveals how boosters, bureaucrats, and engineers--not grassroots protesters--were truly the ones responsible for spearheading the passage of the Clean Water Act of 1972. How these unlikely protagonists helped to pass the era's most far-reaching regulatory law gives us rare insight into how Congress was able to take the lead in addressing those concerns, namely in the form of water quality issues.

Book excerpt: This paper focuses on how to improve the development and management of water resources while providing the principles that link resource management to the specific water-using sectors. In 1993 the Board of the World Bank endorsed a Water Resources Management Policy Paper. In that paper, and this Strategy, water resources management is seen to comprise the institutional framework; management instruments; and the development, maintenance and operation of infrastructure. The paper looks at the dynamics of water and development. It builds on the 1993 policy paper, evaluating current scenarios and looking at future options and their implications both for government policy and the World Bank.

Book excerpt: The International Water Association's 2nd World Water Congress held in Berlin in October 2001 was, like its predecessor, a resounding and well attended success. At the centre of its programme were over three hundred oral presentations addressing the drinking water, sanitation, stormwater and environmental needs of communities worldwide. From the large number of oral presentations, after full peer review, 60 papers dealing with aspects of wastewater treatment processes and sludge management have been selected for this issue. Topics include: treatment microbiology and particle separation; physicochemical treatment and industrial wastewater; biological nutrient removal (including process control); anaerobic treatment; physical-chemical techniques for nutrient removal from wastewater and membrane processes; process design; small wastewater treatment plants; sludge management, strategies and policies; and sludge treatment processes. With some of the world's leading experts as authors, highlighting the latest research results and their practical applications, these proceedings are an essential compilation of the latest advances relating to the whole wastewater treatment process, from fundamental treatment processes to sludge management practices.
