Book excerpt: Unlike European countries where the consolidation of town planning was based on legislative reforms, Latin America’s urbanismo mainly stemmed from urban plans for national capitals and metropolises. Austrian academic and planner Karl Brunner was hired in Chile, Colombia and Panama from the late 1920s to advise in the professional and academic domains, marking a shift from the so-called École Française d’Urbanisme (EFU) of Haussmannesque descent towards the Austrian-German Städtebau, While coordinating the municipal office and plan for Bogotá, Brunner translated his Manual de Urbanismo – the first textbook published in Latin America about the new discipline and the first to incorporate examples from local cities. Based on his 1924 course at Vienna’s National Faculty of Architecture Brunner’s Manual emphasized the ‘scientific system’ of the discipline. Brunner was the most influential figure of his time in the urban planning of the region, but has become overshadowed by Le Corbusier's and CIAM’s prevailing influence after the Second World War. Complete with a supporting introduction written by Arturo Almandoz, this volume includes the full copy of the original Manual de Urbanismo with an English translation of the synthesis. In a world shaped by God, how did they treat environments marked by religious difference? The Keys to Bread and Wine explores the answers to these questions in Valencia in the later Middle Ages. When Christians conquered the city in 1238, it was already one of the richest agricultural areas in the Mediterranean thanks to a network of irrigation canals constructed under Muslim rule. Despite this constructed environment, drought, flooding, plagues, and other natural disasters continued to confront civic leaders in the later medieval period. Abigail Agresta argues that the city's Christian rulers took a technocratic approach to environmental challenges in the fourteenth century but by the mid-fifteenth century relied increasingly on religious ritual, reflecting a dramatic transformation in the city's religious identity. Using the records of Valencia's municipal council, she traces the council's efforts to expand the region's infrastructure in response to natural disasters, while simultaneously rendering the landscape within the city walls more visibly Christian. This having been achieved, Valencia's leaders began by the mid-fifteenth century to privilege rogations and other ritual responses over infrastructure projects. But these appeals to divine aid were less about desperation than confidence in the city's Christianity. Reversing traditional narratives of technological progress, The Keys to Bread and Wine shows how religious concerns shaped the governance of the environment, with far-reaching implications for the environmental and religious history of medieval Iberia.

IV-XI). Il s'agit là du premier volet d'une série intitulée villa dont le champ de recherche couvre l'ensemble de la vallée de l'Ebre et la période des siècles dits obscurs. L'objectif de cette réunion visait à regrouper des universitaires et des chercheurs des deux côtés de la chaîne pyrénéenne pour éclairer la question controversée de la transition de l'Antiquité tardive au Moyen Age. Au-delà de la diversité des exemples abordés, en Navarre, en Aragon comme en Catalogne, les séances ont permis de dégager des points communs dans l'étude du peuplement rural, tel que le poids du déclin démographique des Ve-Vle siècles, l'existence d'un habitat dispersé avant l'an mil, la fréquence des sépultures taillées dans la roche et surtout, avant la grande mutation du Xe siècle, le faible rôle du château dans l'organisation de l'espace et la structuration du peuplement. Malgré les bouleversements entraînés par la conquête musulmane au début du VIIIe siècle, on retiendra surtout qu'il convient d'étudier cette période non plus en termes de fin du monde antique ou de prémices du Moyen Age mais en soi et pour soi, comme un moment particulier, depuis la crise de la villa jusqu'à l'essor de l'incastellamento.
