Despite these serious concerns, the media continues to make drinking look attractive to youth, and it remains possible and even easy for teenagers to get access to alcohol. Why is this dangerous behavior so pervasive? What can be done to prevent it? What will work and who is responsible for making sure it happens? Reducing Underage Drinking addresses these questions and proposes a new way to combat underage alcohol use. It explores the ways in which may different individuals and groups contribute to the problem and how they can be enlisted to prevent it. Book excerpt: "The Adolescent: Development, Relationships, and""Culture" offers an eclectic, interdisciplinary approach to the study of adolescence, presenting both psychological and sociological viewpoints as well as educational, demographic, and economic data. This text discusses not just one theory on the subject, but many, and outlines the contributions, strengths, and weaknesses of each. The authors also take into consideration current and important topics such as ethnic identity formation, gender issues, the Internet, and the effects of single-parent families. The twelfth edition offers a vibrant treatment of the adolescent that offers current scholarship, as well as an understanding of what it means to be an adolescent today. New To This Edition! New full-color design adds visual interest and better complements the current and engaging content. Expanded epilogue contains coverage of "emerging adulthood," a recently defined stage of life that often follows adolescence in modern 21st century society. More than 750 new references keep students abreast of the most contemporary research and topics in the field, such as sleep deprivation in adolescence and the down-turn in adolescent pregnancy. Thought Questions are now divided into three categories: Personal Reflection, Group Discussion, and Debate Questions. Expanded coverage of cross-cultural issues throughout provides a richer and deeper understanding of adolescence across different cultural groups.

Book Synopsis Evaluation of Graduated Driver Licensing in New Jersey by : Raghavan Srinivasan
Download or read book Evaluation of Graduated Driver Licensing in New Jersey written by Raghavan Srinivasan and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Jersey started enforcing a graduated driver license (GDL) system on January 1, 2001. The system requires a three-step process for full licensing: learner's permit at 16 years of age at the earliest; provisional license at 17; and, a basic license at 18. This report is the first phase of an evaluation of the New Jersey GDL system. The number and types of traffic crashes, traffic violations, and license suspensions in New Jersey by age for the years immediately before 2001 were analyzed. The second phase will look at the same type of data after 2001 and will compare the results to the pre 2001 analysis to determine what the impact of GDL has been. The analysis of the pre-2001 data shows that 17 year olds have substantially more crashes and violations per 10,000 people compared to other drivers. A higher percentage of their crashes are single vehicle crashes. In addition, a much higher percent of their crashes are due to unsafe speed, and a higher percent of their crashes are due to inattention, and a failure to obey traffic control devices or yield right of way, compared to middle aged drivers. A higher percent of their violations are due to speeding than any other group, and a higher percent are due to careless driving than for middle aged drivers.
