Download or read book Our Davies Story written by Mary Maxwell and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2023-08-09 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through the New Zealand Company, the first European settlers began arriving in New Zealand in the early 1840s among whom were several sets of great grandparents and great great grandparents of mine. The original idea was to write a short history of my father's family and one of my mother's but I became so fascinated by these pioneers and their stories that I wanted to learn more about them and their ancestors. I found Scottish farmers seemingly dispossessed by war; ancestors from Devon who emigrated to America in 1642; I found admirals and generals who sailed and fought all around the world and I found generations of Welsh carpenters, builders and farmers. Their descendants packed themselves and their families into tiny boats and sailed to the bottom of the world. They were fearless and determined to succeed in a brand new world. I am so proud of their achievements and so proud to be part of their story.

His many accolades – including 12 IRB World Series, two Rugby World Cup Sevens titles and four Commonwealth Games gold medals – easily place him alongside other legendary leaders like Lochore, Henry and Hansen. Many were dumbfounded, then, by the New Zealand Sevens team’s horror showing at the 2016 Rio Olympics – knocked out at the quarter-finals stage, followed by Tietjens’ shock departure from the franchise after a hugely influential 22 years at the helm. Legacy unpacks that fateful Olympic campaign and many other career challenges, but also charts Tietjens’ glory on the world stage, his knack for spotting and cultivating our next rugby stars, his insights into leadership and management strategies, and his thoughts on the future of the game. What unfolds is a gripping account of sport, business and life from a man who gave so much to New Zealand rugby.

Sports Around the World: History, Culture, and Practice provides a unique, global overview of sports and sports cultures. Unlike most works of this type, this book provides both essays that examine general topics, such as globalization and sport, international relations and sport, and tourism and sport, as well as essays on sports history, culture, and practice in world regions—for example, Latin America and the Caribbean, the Middle East and North Africa, Europe, and Oceania—in order to provide a more global perspective. These essays are followed by entries on specific sports, world athletes, stadiums and arenas, famous games and matches, and major controversies. Spanning topics as varied as modern professional cycling to the fictional movie Rocky to the deadly ball game of the ancient Mayans, the first three volumes contain overview essays and entries for specific sports that have been and are currently practiced around the world. The fourth volume provides a compendium of information on the winners of major sporting competitions from around the world. Readers will gain invaluable insights into how sports have been enjoyed throughout all of human culture, and more fully comprehend their cultural contexts. The entries provide suggestions for further reading on each topic—helpful to general readers, students with school projects, university students and academics alike. Additionally, the four-volume Sports Around the World spotlights key charismatic athletes who have changed a sport or become more than just an outstanding player.

Download or read book Game On written by Sue Anstiss and published by Unbound Publishing. This book was released on 2021-09-02 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shortlisted for the Sunday Times Sports Book Awards 2022 Longlisted for the William Hill Sports Book of the Year 2021 Sport has an extraordinary, unique capacity to challenge and change society – to bring joy and hope; to improve physical and mental health, reduce loneliness and build self-esteem and happiness. It’s also a multi-billion-pound commercial industry that can transform lives, businesses, nations and regions. Why has half the population been deprived of access to something so culturally powerful? In recent years, the landscape for women’s sport has finally begun to shift. We’ve seen significant increases in investment, spectators and media coverage. More women as professional athletes and taking influential roles as board directors, editors, officials and CEOs. Yet female athletes still don’t get equal opportunities or funding. In many sports, women receive less prize money, lower sponsorship revenues and a tiny fraction of the media coverage. Drawing on her own experiences, and interviews with high profile Olympic and Paralympic champions, broadcasters, journalists, sports scientists, CEOs, officials and sponsors, Sue Anstiss investigates why women have been excluded from the world of sport for centuries – and why we are now witnessing positive change as never before. Game On is a celebration of the trailblazing women opening doors for others and a manifesto for women’s sport – a rallying cry to ensure the progress we are currently seeing goes from strength to strength.
