Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume approaches the study of Hegel's History of Philosophy from a variety of angles, while centering on Hegel's Berlin "Lectures on the History of Philosophy" (1819–1831), which were given to students and later published. The lectures address most fundamentally what philosophy is—the philosophy of philosophy, so to speak. The contributors treat many significant and topical issues, including: discussions of Hegel's overall idea of a history of philosophy; his treatment of various philosophers and philosophical views from the historical tradition; and the role of Hegel's own philosophical system as a culmination in the development of philosophy historically. This unique collection provides incisive and provocative analyses on an area of study that until now has not garnered as much attention as it deserves.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oxford Handbook of Hegel is a comprehensive guide to Hegel's philosophy, from his first published writings to his final lectures. There are six chapters each on the Phenomenology of Spirit and The Science of Logic, in depth analyses of the Encyclopedia and essays on the major parts of the Philosophy of Right. Several chapters cover the many newly edited lecture series from the 1820s, bringing new clarity to Hegel's conception of aesthetics, the philosophy of religion, and the history of philosophy. The concluding part focuses on Hegel's legacy, from his role in the formation of Marx's philosophy to his importance for contemporary liberal political philosophy. The Handbook includes many essays from younger scholars who have brought new perspectives and rigor to the study of Hegel's thought. The essays are marked by close engagement with Hegel's difficult texts and by a concern to highlight the ongoing systematic importance of Hegel's philosophy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel – A Propaedeutic, Thomas Sören Hoffmann offers a comprehensive intellectual biography of the “master philosopher of German idealism,” the last great system builder of European philosophy. All the major themes of Hegel's thought are worked through – logic and metaphysics; history and spirit; art and language; thought and nature; right, religion and science – and presented as open invitations to conversing with, to working with, indeed to thinking with the great philosopher himself. Hegel's dialectical concept of life is one key deployed by Hoffmann to throw new light on the philosopher's work and to offer resolutions of the perennial enigmas besetting and controversies surrounding it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the fourth volume of Models of the History of Philosophy, a collaborative work on the history of the history of philosophy dating from the Renaissance to the end of the nineteenth century. The volume covers the so-called Hegelian age, in which the approach to the past of philosophy is placed at the foundation of “doing philosophy”, up to identifying with the same philosophy. A philosophy which is however understood in a different way: as dialectical development, as hermeneutics, as organic development, as eclectic option, as a philosophy of experience, as a progressive search for truth through the repetition of errors... The material is divided into four large linguistic and cultural areas: the German, French, Italian and British. It offers the detailed analysis of 10 particularly significant works of the way of conceiving and reconstructing the “general” history of philosophy, from its origins to the contemporary age. This systematic exposure is preceded and accompanied by lengthy introductions on the historical background and references to numerous other works bordering on philosophical historiography.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume, Karl Ameriks explores 'Kantian subjects' in three senses. In Part I, he first clarifies the most distinctive features-such as freedom and autonomy-of Kant's notion of what it is for us to be a subject. Other chapters then consider related 'subjects' that are basic topics in other parts of Kant's philosophy, such as his notions of necessity and history. Part II examines the ways in which many of us, as 'late modern,' have been highly influenced by Kant's philosophy and its indirect effect on our self-conception through successive generations of post-Kantians, such as Hegel and Schelling, and early Romantic writers such as Hölderlin, Schlegel, and Novalis, thus making us 'Kantian subjects' in a new historical sense. By defending the fundamentals of Kant's ethics in reaction to some of the latest scholarship in the opening chapters, Ameriks offers an extensive argument that Hölderlin expresses a valuable philosophical position that is much closer to Kant than has generally been recognized. He also argues that it was necessary for Kant's position to be supplemented by the new conception, introduced by the post-Kantians, of philosophy as fundamentally historical, and that this conception has had a growing influence on the most interesting strands of Anglophone as well as Continental philosophy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Meaning and Embodiment provides a detailed study of Hegel's anthropology to examine the place of corporeity or embodiment in human life, identity, and experience. In Hegel's view, to be human means in part to produce one's own spiritual embodiment in culture and habits. Whereas for animals nature only has meaning relative to biological drives, humans experience meaning in a way that transcends these limits, and which allows for aesthetic appreciation of beauty and sublimity, nihilistic feelings of meaninglessness, and the complex and different systems of symbolic speech and action characterizing language and culture. By elucidating the different forms of embodiment, Nicholas Mowad shows how for Hegel we are embodied in several different ways at once: as extended, subject to physical-chemical forces, living, and human. Many difficult problems in philosophy and everyday experience come down to using the right concept of embodiment. Mowad traces Hegel's account through the growth and development of the body, gender and racial difference, cycles of sleep and waking, and sensibility and mental illness.
