Download or read book 1996 Census Public Use Microdata File (PUMF) on Individuals written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1996 Census public use microdata file (PUMF) on individuals contains data based on a 2.8% sample of the population enumerated in the census. It provides information on the demographic, social and economic characteristics of the Canadian population. The file provides data on the characteristics of the population such as ethnic origin, labour force activity and income levels. This microdata file allows users to group and manipulate the data to suit their own requirements. Thus, it is a powerful research tool. The documentation (metadata) provided in the PUMF on individuals is divided into four chapters: Chapter I contains the record layout, an essential tool for using the file; Chapter II describes the variables included in the file; Chapters III and IV deal with sampling method and data quality. There are two other public use microdata files: one on families and another on households and dwellings.

Book excerpt: This file provides data on the characteristics of the population such as ethnic origin, labour force activity and income levels. It contains 122 variables. The Microdata Files contain samples of anonymous responses to the 1996 Census questionnaire. The files have been carefully scrutinized to ensure the complete confidentiality of the individual responses. PUMFs enable the development of statistical information about Canadians, the families and households to which they belong, and the dwellings in which they live. Microdata files are unique among census products in that they give users access to non-aggregated data. This makes PUMFs a powerful research tools. The user can group and manipulate these variables to suit his/her own data and research requirements. These provide quick access to a comprehensive social and economic database about Canada and its people. All subject matter covered by the census is included in these files. The 1996 PUMFs will only be released on CD-ROM using microcomputer applications.

Book Synopsis Recherche Sur la Hiérarchisation Des Fichiers de Microdonnées À Grande Diffusion Du Recensement by : Jean-René Boudreau
Download or read book Recherche Sur la Hiérarchisation Des Fichiers de Microdonnées À Grande Diffusion Du Recensement written by Jean-René Boudreau and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A microdata file is the set of answers obtained by survey path. For household surveys or population censuses, files of this type are hierarchical if the data on all the persons in the households sampled or enumerated are present. The statistical agencies ensure that this data remain anonymous by eliminating all possibility of identification. A number of countries produce hierarchical files of microdata from their censuses. Canada, however, does not. As a matter of fact, Canada has disseminated microdata files since 1971 but these files have always been designed without incorporating the complete hierarchy of households. We are assessing here the protection of statistical confidentiality for the 2001 census, that is, we are assessing whether it is easy or very difficult to identify individuals from data alone. We define two measurements of statistical confidentiality protection: the conditional probability of uniqueness and the conditional probability of exact matches. We apply these two measurements to a set of records from the 1996 census for various groups of variables. On the basis of the results obtained, we conclude that publication of a public use hierarchical file significantly reduces the protection of statistical confidentiality"--Abstract, p. iii.

Book Synopsis Social Differentiation by : Danielle Juteau Lee
Download or read book Social Differentiation written by Danielle Juteau Lee and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social Differentiation examines the economic, political, and normatively defined relations that underlie the construction of social categories. Social differentiation, embedded in inequalities of power, status, wealth, and prestige, affects life chances of individuals as well as the allocation of resources and opportunities. Starting with a theoretical framework that challenges many traditional analyses, the contributors focus on four specific strands of social differentiation: gender, age, race/ethnicity, and locality. They explore the historically specific social practices, policies, and ideologies that produce distinct forms of inequality, in turn revealing and explaining such issues as the formation and maintenance of a gendered order; the privileging of prime-age workers; the penalties incurred by visible minorities in the labour market; the highly disadvantaged position of Aboriginals; and the economic decline of agriculture, resource, and fishing dependent regions. By paying special attention to political processes, norms, and representations, and by indicating how social policies shape economic functioning and relate to normative definitions, this book will interest policy-oriented researchers and decision-makers.
