Book Synopsis Catalysis In Chemistry And Biology - Proceedings Of The 24th International Solvay Conference On Chemistry by : Kurt Wuthrich
Download or read book Catalysis In Chemistry And Biology - Proceedings Of The 24th International Solvay Conference On Chemistry written by Kurt Wuthrich and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2018-06-27 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Proceedings of the 24th International Solvay Conference on Chemistry comprise contributed short personal statements and transcripts of in-depth discussions on 'Catalysis in Chemistry and Biology' from a by-invitation-only select group of 48 eminent scientists, including four Nobel Laureates, from all parts of the world. The theme of the conference was presented in six sessions, along which the Proceedings are organized. The first session on 'Homogeneous Catalysis,' chaired by Professor Robert Grubbs, is devoted to basic research on catalysis in homogeneous solutions and applications thereof. 'Heterogeneous Catalysis and Characterization of Catalyst Surfaces,' chaired by Professor Gerhard Ertl, includes extensive references to industrial applications of catalysis on solid supports, and discussions on the experimental techniques used in this field. 'Catalysis by Microporous Materials,' chaired by Professor Mark E. Davis, is devoted to a detailed characterization of this particular class of solid support catalysts, with special emphasis on model analysis of the processes catalyzed by these materials. 'Catalysis under Extreme Conditions: Studies at High Pressure and High Temperatures — Relations with Processes in Nature,' chaired by Professor Henk N W Lekkerkerker, broadens the scope of the two preceding sessions with exciting illustrations. The sessions on 'Catalysis by Protein Enzymes,' chaired by Prof. JoAnne Stubbe, and 'Catalysis by Ribozymes in Molecular Machines,' chaired by Prof. David Lilley, present at the same time an exciting extension of and a contrast to the initial four sessions. The combination of the six sessions provides an impressive overview, giving innovative insights into relationships between catalysis in chemical processes and in biological systems, and a unique outlook to anticipated developments in the coming years and the more distant future.
Book Synopsis Strings and Gravity by : Marc Henneaux
Download or read book Strings and Gravity written by Marc Henneaux and published by De Boeck Supérieur. This book was released on 2003-03-13 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Einstein theory of gravity is one of the pillars of modern physics. In the last years, this theory has undergone dramatic developments, both on the experimental and theoretical sides. In particular, string theory, which started in the last quarter of the XXth century, offers remarkable prospects to unify all the fundamental interactions - realizing thereby one of the Einstein's dreams. This book contains the contributions of the world leaders in the field who took part in the "Francqui conference" held on this theme in Brussels in October 2001.
Book Synopsis Catalysis by Microporous Materials by : H.K. Beyer
Download or read book Catalysis by Microporous Materials written by H.K. Beyer and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1995-05-19 with total page 811 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ZEOCAT '95 is the eleventh in the series of symposia devoted to special fields of zeolite chemistry. Six plenary lectures, forty oral and forty-two poster presentations were included in the program. The accepted papers cover every aspect of catalysis on microporous materials. A significant number of the contributions describe the synthesis, modification, instrumental and chemical characterisation of zeolites and other micro- and mesoporous materials. Catalytic reactions involve hydrocarbon cracking, nucleophilic aromatic substitution, methanol to hydrocarbon conversion, hydration of acetylene, various alkylation reactions, redox transformations, Claisen rearrangement, etc.
Book Synopsis Thinking Physics for Teaching by : C. Bernardini
Download or read book Thinking Physics for Teaching written by C. Bernardini and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research in Physics Education has to do with the search of solutions to the complex problem of how to improve the learning and teaching of physics. The complexity of the problem lies in the different fields of knowledge that need to be considered in the research. In fact, besides the disciplinary knowledge in physics (which must be considered from the conceptual, the historical, and the epistemological framework), one has to take into account some basic knowledge in the context of psychology and the cognitive sciences (for the general and contextual aspects of learning) and some basic knowledge in education and comunication (for what concerns teaching skills and strategies). Looking back at the historical development of the research one may recognize that the complexity of the endeavour was not clear at first but became clear in its development, which shifted the focus of the research in the course of time from physics to learning to teaching. We may say that the research started, more than 30 years ago, with a focus on disciplinary knowledge. Physicists in different parts of the western world, after research work in some field of physics, decided to concentrate on the didactical comunication of physical knowledge.

Book Synopsis Interactive Lecture Demonstrations by : David R. Sokoloff
Download or read book Interactive Lecture Demonstrations written by David R. Sokoloff and published by Wiley. This book was released on 2006-09-18 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interactive Lecture Demonstrations (ILDs) are designed to enhance conceptual learning in physics lectures through active engagement of students in the learning process. Students observe real physics demonstrations, make predictions about the outcomes on a prediction sheet, and collaborate with fellow students by discussing their predictions in small groups. Students then examine the results of the live demonstration (often displayed as real-time graphs using computer data acquisition tools), compare these results with their predictions, and attempt to explain the observed phenomena. ILDs are available for all of the major topics in the introductory physics course and can be used within the traditional structure of an introductory physics course. All of the printed materials needed to implement them are included in this book.
Book Synopsis Reasoning in Physics by : L. Viennot
Download or read book Reasoning in Physics written by L. Viennot and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-05-08 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For a meaningful understanding of physics, it is necessary to realise that this corpus of knowledge operates in a register different from natural thought. This book aims at situating the main trends of common reasoning in physics with respect to some essential aspects of accepted theory. It analyses a great many research results based on studies of pupils and students at various academic levels, involving a range of physical situations. It shows the impressive generality of the trends of common thought, as well as their resistance to teaching. The book's main focus is to underline to what extent natural thought is organised. As a result of this mapping out of trends of reasoning, some suggestions for teaching are presented; these have already influenced recent curricula in France. This book is intended for teachers and teacher trainers principally, but students can also benefit from it to improve their understanding of physics and of their own ways of reasoning.
