Book excerpt: The First 100 Years tells the story from 1907 to 2007 of the First Baptist Church of Passtown and the African American Community of Hayti in Coatesville, Pennsylvania. The church members and residents tell their stories in words and pictures during the milestone 100th Anniversary of the First Baptist Church of Passtown in 2007. There are many historical Hayti communities throughout the United States. In this Hayti community, families migrating from the South found an oasis and have been neighbors and friends for over 100 years. Whether researching segregated schools in a northern state; or family members who migrated from the South to work in a steel town; or history contained in the books written by Hayti residents; you may find the answer inside, on the pages of this book. The surprise connections fell from the sky. What began as a small, local history of our church and community has yielded so much more historical texture. The years tell us much that the days never knew - Ralph Waldo Emerson Welcome to Hayti and the First Baptist Church of Passtown!

Pastoral Theology and Care: Critical Trajectories in Theory and Practice offers a collection of essays by leading pastoral theologians that represent emerging trajectories in the fields of pastoral theology and care. The topics explored include: qualitative research and ethnography, advances in neuroscience, care across pluralities and intersections in religion and spiritualties, the influence of neoliberal economics in socio-economic vulnerabilities, postcolonial theory and its implications, the intersections of race and religion in caring for black women, and the usefulness of intersectionality for pastoral practice. Each of the essays offers a richly illustrated review of a practice of pastoral care relationally and in the public domain. The contributions to this volume engage seven critical directions emerging in the literature of pastoral theology in the United States and internationally among pastoral and practical theologians. While coverage of these topics does not exhaust important points of activity in the field, it does represent especially promising resources for theory and practice. This important work: Offers unique coverage of new directions in the field Includes contributions from an exceptional group of experts who are noted leaders in their areas of study Introduces the newest perspectives on pastoral care and offers constructive proposals Filled with case illustrations that make chapters pedagogically useful, Pastoral Theology and Care is essential reading for faculty, seminarians and students in advanced degree programs, and pastors.

Book excerpt: Throughout his life, John Ryland Jr. (1753–1825) served the Particular Baptists in England as a pastor, academy president, and missions advocate, becoming one of the most prominent voices in his denomination. A committed Calvinist and Baptist, Ryland nevertheless became known in his day for his openness toward those who did not hold to his theological convictions. From his correspondence with Anglicans, Congregationalists, Presbyterians, and even the Russian emperor, to his cooperation with Arminians and Methodists, Ryland showed his willingness to enter into relationships and partnerships with a broad spectrum of Christians. This work examines that aspect of Ryland’s life and thought, seeking to understand the denominational context, theological foundations, and personal influences that led him to adopt such a broad-minded view.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book depicts the challenging experiences of two twins - Dreams, Hope, and Passion in obtaining the American Dream." Establishing the argument for " Refocusing the African American Dream" is precipitated by the need to clarify what is freedom, and what makes freedom so important? Generally, dreams are food for the soul. Dreams also give us hope. Whereas, hope is the opportunity for expectation, and passion is the need and desire to turn those hopes and dreams into reality. With freedom comes responsibility. There are three fundamental critical societal problems, which impacts "The African American Dream," they are fundamentally social problems notably: an increase in single-parent households, inadequate education preparation, and no economic foundation. Despite the difficulties associated with single-family households, inadequate education preparation and, no financial foundation. The Declaration of Independence depicts the concept of freedom in terms of inalienable rights, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. As a result, there is no mention of economic independence. Economics is an important issue, which confronts our families; because it is a necessary means for financial freedom, and it facilitates our participation in a market economy. If a culture has no strong economic base, then it resembles a plantation. The civil rights movement was very much about gaining control over economic means, and not so much about getting political power as an end in itself. Your circumstances at birth—mainly, what your parents do for a living—are an even more significant factor in how far you get in life than we had previously realized. On the other hand, if you are first-generation educated like the Thompson twins, it is your Dreams, Hope, and Passion that makes the difference. In either case, you are the foundation for the next generation's success. The process only works if you have a flourishing economy at best.

Book excerpt: Britain's first flying machine was trailed in Perthshire in 1907 and ever since - whether at war or in peacetime - Scotland has been in the frontline of British military aviation. In Tartan Air Force Deborah Lake investigates Scotland's contribution to military flying over the last hundred years. With a wealth of previously unpublished or little-known accounts from air and ground crew, fliers and non-fliers, this is a comprehensive and entertaining tribute which emphasises the human aspect of Scotland's part in the history. From the Second World War, when many famous missions, including those against the great German battleship Tirpitz, were undertaken from Scottish airfields, to the importance of its RAF air bases and radar stations in asserting the Soviet threat during the Cold War and beyond, Scotland has played its part in protecting the skies.

Book excerpt: This book offers fresh research and insights into the complex relationship between the press, war, and society in the 20th century, by examining the role of the newspaper press in the period c.1900– 1960, with a particular focus on the Second World War. During the warfare of the 20th century, the mass media were used to sustain domestic morale and promote combatants’ views to an international audience. Topics covered in this book include British newspaper cartoonists’ coverage of the Russo- Japanese War, the role of the French press in Anglo- French diplomacy in the 1930s, Irish press coverage of Dunkirk and D- Day, government censorship of the press in wartime Portugal, the reporting of American troops in North Africa, and how the Greek press became the focus of British government propaganda in the 1940s. Particular attention is given to the role of the British press in the Second World War: its coverage of evacuation, popular politics, and D- Day; the war as seen through commercial press advertising; the wartime Daily Mirror; and Fleet Street’s role as a ‘national’ press in wartime. This book explores how— and why— newspapers have presented wars to their readers, and the importance of the press as an agent of social and political power in an age of conflict. This book was originally published as a special issue of Media History.

Lisa Cooper here explores Bell's achievements, emphasizing the tenacious, inquisitive side of her extraordinary personality, the breadth of her knowledge and her overall contribution to the archaeology of the Middle East.
