Download or read book An Unwanted War written by John L. Offner and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2014-04-24 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Offner clarifies the complex relations of the United States, Spain, and Cuba leading up to the Spanish-American War and contends that the war was not wanted by any of the parties but was nonetheless unavoidable. He shows that a final round of peace negotiations failed in large part because internal political constraints limited diplomatic flexibility.
Book Synopsis The Body and Military Masculinity in Late Qing and Early Republican China by : Nicolas Schillinger
Download or read book The Body and Military Masculinity in Late Qing and Early Republican China written by Nicolas Schillinger and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2016-12-12 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1894–1895, after suffering defeat against Japan in a war primarily fought over the control of Korea, the Qing government initiated fundamental military reforms and established “New Armies“ modeled after the German and Japanese military. Besides reorganizing the structure of the army and improving military training, the goal was to overcome the alleged physical weakness and lack of martial spirit attributed to Chinese soldiers in particular and to Chinese men in general. Intellectuals, government officials, and military circles criticized the pacifist and civil orientation of Chinese culture, which had resulted in a negative attitude towards its armed forces and martial values throughout society and a lack of interest in martial deeds, glory on the battlefield, and military achievements among men. The book examines the cultivation of new soldiers, officers, and civilians through new techniques intended to discipline their bodies and reconfigure their identities as military men and citizens. The book shows how the establishment of German-style “New Armies” in China between 1895 and 1916 led to the re‐creation of a militarized version of masculinity that stressed physical strength, discipline, professionalism, martial spirit, and “Western” military appearance and conduct. Although the military reforms did not prevent the downfall of the Qing Dynasty or provide stable military clout to subsequent regimes, they left a lasting legacy by reconfiguring Chinese military culture and re‐creating military masculinity and the image of men in China.
Book Synopsis Modern Times: British Prints, 1913–1939 by : Jennifer Farrell
Download or read book Modern Times: British Prints, 1913–1939 written by Jennifer Farrell and published by Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book was released on 2021-10-20 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The bold graphic images made by artists affiliated with Vorticism, British Futurism, and the Grosvenor School of Modern Art capture the optimism and anxiety of early twentieth-century Britain. This richly illustrated volume features rare British prints from the Leslie and Johanna Garfield collection dating between 1913 and 1939—a period marked by two world wars, a global pandemic, the Great Depression, and the rise of Fascism and Communism, but also new technologies, women’s suffrage, and a growing focus on public access to art. Essays explore how artists turned to printmaking to alleviate trauma, memorialize their wartime experiences, and capture the aspirations and fears of the twenties and thirties. At the heart of the catalogue are the colorful linocuts made by artists associated with London’s celebrated Grosvenor School. The visually striking compositions by Sybil Andrews, Claude Flight, Cyril E. Power, and Lill Tschudi, among others, convey the vitality of quotidian life during the machine age.

Book Synopsis Territory, War, and Peace by : John A. Vasquez
Download or read book Territory, War, and Peace written by John A. Vasquez and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-04-14 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a collection of new and updated essays on what has come to be known as the territorial explanation of war. The book argues that a key both to peace and to war lies in understanding the role territory plays as a source of conflict and inter-group violence. Of all the issues that spark conflict, territorial disputes have the highest probability of escalating to war. War, however, is hardly inevitable; much depends on how territorial issues are handled. More importantly, settling territorial disputes and establishing mutually recognized boundaries can produce long periods of peace between neighbors, even if other salient issues arise. While territory is not the only cause of war and wars arise from other issues, territory is one of the main causes of war, and learning how to manage it, can, in principle, eliminate an entire class of wars. This book will be of great interest to all students of war and conflict studies, causes of war and peace, international security and strategic studies. John A. Vasquez is Thomas B. Mackie Scholar in International Relations at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. He is author of The Steps to War (2008) (with Paul Senese) and The War Puzzle Revisited (2009). He has been president of the Peace Science Society (International) and the International Studies Association. Marie T. Henehan is Director of Internships and Lecturer, Department of Political Science at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. She is author of Foreign Policy and Congress: An International Relations Perspective and co-editor of The Scientific Study of Peace and War.
Book Synopsis Compounds of Transition Metals by : Michael Dub
Download or read book Compounds of Transition Metals written by Michael Dub and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-12-01 with total page 845 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this Compilation has been to provide a comprehensive, non critical source of information concerning organometallic compounds. The scope is limited to the compounds containing at least one carbon-metal bond. The information includes methods of preparation, properties, chemical reactions and applications. The First Edition comprised the literature from 1937 to 1958. The Second Edition is completely revised and extended through 1964. The literature prior to 1937 was thoroughly covered by E. Krause and A. von Grosse in 11 11 Die Chemie der metall-organischen Verbindungen, Verlag von Gebrueder Borntraeger, Berlin, 1937. Our work consists of three volumes. Volume I contains derivatives of the transition metals of Groups III through VIII of the Periodic Table. Volume II contains derivatives of germanium, tin and lead. Volume Ill contains derivatives of arsenic, antimony and bismuth. The Compilation is based on searches through Chemical Abstracts. The collection of references for 1964 was completed before the Subject Indexes to Volumes 60 and 61 of the Abstracts were available; thus some omissions in the coverage of that year are possible. We have attempted to make the coverage of the literature complete in order that the Compilation may have best utility to the chemist, chemical engineer, patent attorney and editor. In the interest of brevity, certain numerical data are omitted, but references to the original literature are given. Yield data are rounded to two significant figures. Wherever possible, tables have been used. The entries in the Bibliography section include references to Chemical Abstracts.

Book Synopsis Grounded Theory by : Vivian B. Martin
Download or read book Grounded Theory written by Vivian B. Martin and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2011 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This anthology provides a unique collection of articles on classic grounded theory, as developed by sociologist Dr. Barney G. Glaser. Organized in four sections, teaching grounded theory, techniques, history and philosophy, and advanced approaches, the 19 chapters fill gaps and correct misunderstandings about the method. Chapters on the merits of classic grounded theory over other versions, the historical and philosophical influences on the method, and advice for Ph.D. students doing classic grounded theory dissertations will be useful to novice and experienced researchers. How-to chapters on the use of focus groups, online interviews, and video for data collection expand data possibilities, while articles on formal theory, software, and testing concepts with structural equation modeling will challenge the more experienced. Essays on Glaser as a teacher, as well as a biographical interview in which he discusses his life philosophy and, for the first time, the influence of psychoanalysis on grounded theory, round out the picture of Glaser as mentor and man. The book's contributors, from nine countries and as many disciplines, all studied grounded theory with Glaser.
Book Synopsis Direct and Allosteric Control of Glutamate Receptors by : Michael G. Palfreyman
Download or read book Direct and Allosteric Control of Glutamate Receptors written by Michael G. Palfreyman and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1994-08-16 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Direct and Allosteric Control of Glutamate Receptors describes in detail recent research that has demonstrated that glutamate receptors are subject to numerous modulatory controls. Significant new insights into the physiology and pathophysiology of the nervous system have been obtained by these discoveries. The sites on the receptor proteins where modulation occurs have provided a platform of opportunities for medicinal chemists to design new therapeutic modalities. These new drugs will be of major significance in treating diseases (such as stroke, Alzheimer's, epilepsy, Parkinson's, Huntington's, neurotrauma, schizophrenia, pain, and anxiety) associated with abnormal excitatory amino acid neurotransmission and function.

Book Synopsis Encyclopedia of the African Diaspora [3 volumes] by : Carole Boyce Davies
Download or read book Encyclopedia of the African Diaspora [3 volumes] written by Carole Boyce Davies and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2008-07-29 with total page 1269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authoritative source for information on the people, places, and events of the African Diaspora, spanning five continents and five centuries. The field of African Diaspora studies is rapidly growing. Until now there was no single, authoritative source for information on this broad, complex discipline. Drawing on the work of over 300 scholars, this encyclopedia fills that void. Now the researcher, from high school level up, can go to a single reference for information on the historical, political, economic, and cultural relations between people of African descent and the rest of the world community. Five hundred years of relocation and dislocation, of assimilation and separation have produced a rich tapestry of history and culture into which are woven people, places, and events. This authoritative, accessible work picks out the strands of the tapestry, telling the story of diverse peoples, separated by time and distance, but retaining a commonality of origin and experience. Organized in A–Z sections covering global topics, country of origin, and destination country, the work is designed for easy use by all.
Download or read book My Life in Vaudeville written by Ed Lowry and published by SIU Press. This book was released on 2011-02-07 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An entertaining record of a life and a time Ed Lowry joined the vaudeville circuit in 1910 at the age of fourteen. He never achieved stardom equal to the likes of Fred Allen, Jack Benny, George Burns, Buster Keaton, or Eddie Cantor, and he never considered himself an “artiste.” Instead, he saw himself as a hoofer and comic simply trying to make a living on the vaude scene. My Life in Vaudeville recounts Lowry’s long career in entertainment from the viewpoint of a foot soldier with a big dream. Lowry’s story begins in the heyday of vaudeville in the early twentieth century and follows its gradual decline. Unlike many of his associates, he recognized that movies and other forms of entertainment were the future, and thus branched out into other venues. He took gigs in radio in Philadelphia, Newark, New York, and Los Angeles; explored revues, cabarets, burlesque, and film; and organized USO road shows. With wit and perception, he reveals his stage roots as an entertainer playing to his audience, and editor Paul M. Levitt’s introduction beautifully sets the stage for Lowry’s gags-to-riches tale, providing much-needed historical perspective. My Life in Vaudeville is an unpretentious record of a time when thousands of young people went into show business to escape the boredom of daily life, and Lowry’s story is a view of vaudeville not often encountered. Lowry does much more than recall the daily life of a working actor, musician, and comedian. His story brings vaudeville to life and places it within the larger narratives of popular culture and popular entertainment of the twentieth century.
