Book Synopsis For the Love of the Game by : Nancy Barbara Bouchier
Download or read book For the Love of the Game written by Nancy Barbara Bouchier and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2003 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring the complex issues of class and gender relations, community building and sport reform, this work analyses how local culture shapes the meanings of sport and examines the tensions that exist when athletes and sports teams become important symbols for the community. Nancy Bouchier traces the increasing importance of amateur sport to Woodstock and Ingersoll, two small nineteenth-century Ontario towns, revealing its intricate ties to urban boosterism and middle-class culture. Focusing on civic holiday celebrations, the establishment of organized clubs for cricket, baseball, and lacrosse, and the rise of spirited urban sports rivalries, Bouchier shows that small town interest in sports was much more than a pale imitation of the sporting life of Canada's major urban centres.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In February 1890, in a remote swamp in rural southwestern Ontario, two woodsmen discovered the frozen body of a well-dressed young stranger killed by two bullets to the back of the head. Before long, police laid a murder charge on Reginald Birchall, a handsome young gentleman from London just arrived in Canada to conduct an emigration scam. Although accused of the cold-blooded murder, Birchall charmed everyone he met and delighted in the attention lavished by the press of Canada, the United States, and Britain. In Deadly Swindle, Ian Radforth tells the fascinating story of one of Canada’s most sensational murder cases and shows how the regional and international press ran with it. The book draws an intriguing picture of social life in late nineteenth-century Canada, as well as a vivid and learned portrait of the workings of the criminal justice system at this time in the country’s history. A lively narrative, Deadly Swindle is based on extensive research, notably in Victorian newspapers, and is strengthened by a thorough knowledge of press history and the legal processes of the day.

Book Synopsis Northern Star by : R. Peter Broughton
Download or read book Northern Star written by R. Peter Broughton and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Stanley Plaskett was Canada’s pre-eminent astronomer in the first half of the twentieth century. His legacy lives on in the observatory he founded in Victoria, British Columbia, and the reputation he built for Canada as a nation making vital contributions to basic science. Plaskett’s pioneering work with the most massive stars and his definitive determination of the rotation of the Milky Way Galaxy earned him international recognition of the highest order. Northern Star explores Plaskett’s unorthodox and fascinating life from his rural roots near Woodstock, Ontario through his days as a technician at the University of Toronto to his initiation in astronomy at the Dominion Observatory in Ottawa. His greatest achievements followed after he persuaded the government of Canada, in spite of the strictures of the First World War, to finance what was then the world’s largest operational telescope. Peter Broughton’s accessible and engaging prose illuminates Plaskett’s numerous achievements and the social, political, economic, and religious milieu surrounding them. This richly illustrated volume invites readers to understand the pull that Plaskett’s passions, personality, and motivations exerted on him during his lifetime.

Book Synopsis "I wish to keep a record" by : Gail G. Campbell
Download or read book "I wish to keep a record" written by Gail G. Campbell and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2017-04-24 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nineteenth-century New Brunswick society was dominated by white, Protestant, Anglophone men. Yet, during this time of state formation in Canada, women increasingly helped to define and shape a provincial outlook. I wish to keep a record is the first book to focus exclusively on the life-course experiences of nineteenth-century New Brunswick women. Gail G. Campbell offers an interpretive scholarly analysis of 28 women’s diaries while enticing readers to listen to the voices of the diarists. Their diaries show women constructing themselves as individuals, assuming their essential place in building families and communities, and shaping their society by directing its outward gaze and envisioning its future. Campbell’s lively analysis calls on scholars to distinguish between immigrant and native-born women and to move beyond present-day conceptions of such women’s world. This unique study provides a framework for developing an understanding of women's worlds in nineteenth-century North America.
