This book was released on 2017-04-18 with total page 499 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Colonial Chesapeake Families: British Origins and Descendants Harrison Dwight Cavanagh The first edition was awarded the Sumner A. Parker Prize by the Maryland Historical Society in 2014. The second edition of this work features all descendants of Thomas Gantt I (b. Bullwick, N. Hants; to Md. 1654; d. Calvert County, 1692) and Ann Fielder (b. ca. 1662 Hants; d. Prince Georges County, 1726) in the first six to ten generations. Ann Fielder is an important new addition to American colonial Gateway ancestors. Her parents, Capt. William Fielder (ca. 16201679) of Burrough Court Manor and Marjorie Cole (16281699) of Lyss Abbey, Hants, have proven multiple royal and Magna Carta ancestral lines; sixty extensive British pedigrees are documented in these volumes. The name Fielder has been inherited in multiple generations of the Beall, Belt, Berry, Bowie, Calvert, Clagett, Denwood, Dorsett, Gantt, Jones (Somerset County), Parker (Calvert County), Smallwood, Smith (Calvert County), and Wight (White) Maryland families. In addition, this second edition contains important new research findings on the British origins of the Hatton-Domville and Brooke-Darnall families, as well as revealing the two lost Ann Bradfords of Prince Georges County. Colonial Chesapeake Families details the pedigrees of eighty-eight families, historical illustrations, portraits, documents, and coats of arms (where proven) are included. The publication of these volumes has been subsidized to make them more widely available to the thousands of descendants listed in their pages. And thanks to print on demand, Colonial Chesapeake Families will never go out of print.
Book Synopsis The Assassin's Accomplice by : Kate Clifford Larson
Download or read book The Assassin's Accomplice written by Kate Clifford Larson and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2011-02-22 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Assassin's Accomplice, historian Kate Clifford Larson tells the gripping story of Mary Surratt, a little-known participant in the plot to kill Abraham Lincoln, and the first woman ever to be executed by the federal government of the United States. Surratt, a Confederate sympathizer, ran the boarding house in Washington where the conspirators-including her rebel son, John Surratt-met to plan the assassination. When a military tribunal convicted her for her crimes and sentenced her to death, five of the nine commissioners petitioned President Andrew Johnson to show mercy on Surratt because of her sex and age. Unmoved, Johnson refused-Surratt, he said, "kept the nest that hatched the egg." Set against the backdrop of the Civil War, The Assassin's Accomplice tells the intricate story of the Lincoln conspiracy through the eyes of its only female participant. Based on long-lost interviews, confessions, and court testimony, the text explores how Mary's actions defied nineteenth-century norms of femininity, piety, and motherhood, leaving her vulnerable to deadly punishment historically reserved for men. A riveting narrative account of sex, espionage, and murder cloaked in the enchantments of Southern womanhood, The Assassin's Accomplice offers a fresh perspective on America's most famous murder.

Book Synopsis The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Retirement Series, Volume 18 by : Thomas Jefferson
Download or read book The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Retirement Series, Volume 18 written by Thomas Jefferson and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2022-04-26 with total page 800 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new definitive volume of the retirement papers of Thomas Jefferson This volume’s 627 documents feature a vast assortment of topics. Jefferson writes of his dread of “a doting old age.” He inserts an anonymous note in the Richmond Enquirer denying that he has endorsed a candidate for the next presidential election, and he publishes two letters in that newspaper under his own name to refute a Federalist claim that he once benefited by overcharging the United States Treasury. Jefferson does not reply to unsolicited letters seeking his opinion on constitutional matters, judicial review, and a call for universal white male suffrage in Virginia. Fearing that it would set a dangerous precedent, he declines appointment as patron of a new society “for the civilisation of the Indians.” Jefferson is also asked to comment on proposed improvements to stoves, lighthouses, telescopes, and navigable balloons. Citing his advanced age and stiffened wrist, he avoids detailed replies and allows his complaint to John Adams about the volume of incoming correspondence to be leaked to the press in hopes that strangers will stop deluging them both with letters. Jefferson approves of the growth of Unitarianism and predicts that “there is not a young man now living in the US. who will not die an Unitarian.”
