This book was released on 2014-08-15 with total page 1002 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Illustrated with 9 maps and 2 portraits The 1807-14 war in the Iberian Peninsula was one of the most significant and influential campaigns of the Napoleonic Wars. Arising from Napoleon's strategic need to impose his rule over Portugal and Spain, it evolved into a constant drain on his resources. Sir Charles Oman's seven-volume history of the campaign is an unrivalled and essential work. His extensive use and analysis of French, Spanish, Portuguese and British participants' accounts and archival material, together with his own inspection of the battlefields, provides a comprehensive and balanced account of this most important episode in Napoleonic military history. The first part of this classic work provides the background to the war and its origins, and covers the early stages of the conflict. Introducing the subject and many of its main players, this volume recounts the French invasion of Portugal and the forcible deposition of the Spanish royal family, the beginning of Spanish popular resistance, the arrival of the British in the Iberian Peninsula, the first victories of Sir Arthur Wellesley (the future Duke of Wellington), Napoleon's personal participation in the Spanish campaign, the French surrender at Baylen, and Sir John Moore's terrible retreat, ending with his death in the hour of victory at the Battle of Corunna.

This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ferdinard von Funck (1761-1828) was born into sleepy Saxony, securely moored in a backwater of the eighteenth century, during the long reign of Frederick Augustus, the world forgetting it and only anxious to be by the world forgot. Even the ferment of the French Revolution had hardly ruffled its stagnant calm. Into this idyll of the eighteenth century burst Napoleon in full career with the methods of the nineteenth century in a hurry—as the progress of some high-powered modern tug in midstream leaves the heavy craft, moored against the bank, swaying and creaking waterlogged in its wash. By this time von Funck was a senior general in the newly re-organized Saxon army and Adjutant-general to Frederick Augustus, who had recently been raised to the dignity of a king for throwing his lot in with Napoleon. A very astute and balanced witness, the author has left a snapshot of Napoleon and his empire building at its apogee. As the title of the memoirs suggests, the record that General von Funck has left to posterity is that of the new Kingdom of Saxony, as he and his people struggled to come to terms with the full ramifications of being allied to Napoleon. Filled with anecdotes of the new King, his court, Napoleon and his senior ministers, the pages are a witty and full of interest. The memoirs were considered to be so explosive that they were not even published in Germany until 1928 with an English translation produced soon afterward.

Book Synopsis A History Of The British Army – Vol. VI – (1807-1809) by : Hon. Sir John William Fortescue
Download or read book A History Of The British Army – Vol. VI – (1807-1809) written by Hon. Sir John William Fortescue and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2014-06-13 with total page 589 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sir John Fortescue holds a pre-eminent place amongst British military historians, his enduring fame and legacy resting mainly on his life’s work “The History of the British Army”, issued in 20 volumes, which took him some 30 years to complete. In scope and breadth it is such that no modern scholar has attempted to cover such a large and diverse subject in its entirety; but Sir John did so and with aplomb, leading to a readable and comprehensive study. According to Professor Emeritus of Military History at King’s College, Brian Bond, the work was “the product of indefatigable research in original documents, a determination to present a clear, accurate, and readable narrative of military operations, and a close personal knowledge of the battlefields, which enabled him to elucidate his account with excellent maps. Most important, however, was his motivation: namely, a lifelong affection for the old, long-service, pre-Cardwell army, the spirit of the regiments of which it largely consisted, and the value of its traditions to the nation. An important part of his task was to distil and inculcate these soldierly virtues which, in his conservative view, contrasted sharply with the unedifying character of politicians who habitually meddled in military matters.” ODNB. This sixth volume covers the period from 1807-1809, particularly the initial stages of involvement of the British Army in the struggle in the Iberian Peninsular. Written as always with superb detail and authority, Sir John details the opening of the British campaigns in Portugal, the battles at Roliça and Vimiero, before the brutal retreat and battle of Sir John Moore at Coruña. SPECTATOR.—"The new volumes of A History of the British Army are of the same high quality as those which have gone before. We can give no higher praise, for Mr. Fortescue can only be compared with himself. " A MUST READ for any military enthusiast.
