Book Synopsis The Formation of the German Chemical Community, 1720-1795 by : Karl Hufbauer
Download or read book The Formation of the German Chemical Community, 1720-1795 written by Karl Hufbauer and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1982-01-01 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Well before Germany emerged as a single nation or chemistry as a clearly defined profession, German chemists had formed a national scientific community that presaged the increasing specialization so characteristic of modern science. It found a forum in the chemical journal established by Lorenz Crell in 1778. It proved its cohesiveness first by rejecting Lavoisier's theory on nationalistic grounds and then, after a fierce struggle, by rallying behind "the French system." This pioneering study of the early German chemical community is rich in implications for the social history of science. Charts, tables, graphs and illustrations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the decades between the French Revolution and the first stirrings of liberalism in the 1830s, German political culture defined itself apart from that of its neighbors to the west. Focusing on the career of Johann Cotta, the preeminent publisher of his generation, this book offers a lens through which we can more fully view and understand these turbulent years. Cotta is a familiar figure in the history of German letters, but his public life has never been studied comprehensively. He financed and directed the Allgemeine Zeitung of Augsburg, which would become one of the great European newspapers of the nineteenth century. He was the first German to convert money and cultural prestige into political power by means of the press. Cotta and his colleagues emerge not as liberals, but as characteristic figures of the Reform era. Their aim was to define and institutionalize a realm of thought and action beyond the control of the state, but short of opposed to it—a "public" realm in which intellectual independence and political loyalty would be equally well served. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press’s mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Book Synopsis Race, Removal, and the Right to Remain by : Samantha Seeley
Download or read book Race, Removal, and the Right to Remain written by Samantha Seeley and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2021-08-05 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who had the right to live within the newly united states of America? In the country's founding decades, federal and state politicians debated which categories of people could remain and which should be subject to removal. The result was a white Republic, purposefully constructed through contentious legal, political, and diplomatic negotiation. But, as Samantha Seeley demonstrates, removal, like the right to remain, was a battle fought on multiple fronts. It encompassed tribal leaders' fierce determination to expel white settlers from Native lands and free African Americans' legal maneuvers both to remain within the states that sought to drive them out and to carve out new lives in the West. Never losing sight of the national implications of regional conflicts, Seeley brings us directly to the battlefield, to middle states poised between the edges of slavery and freedom where removal was both warmly embraced and hotly contested. Reorienting the history of U.S. expansion around Native American and African American histories, Seeley provides a much-needed reconsideration of early nation building.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A fascinating account of the gathering and dissemination of news from the end of the Middle Ages to the French Revolution” and the rise of the newspaper (Glenn Altschuler, The Huffington Post). Long before the invention of printing, let alone the daily newspaper, people wanted to stay informed. In the pre-industrial era, news was mostly shared through gossip, sermons, and proclamations. The age of print brought pamphlets, ballads, and the first news-sheets. In this groundbreaking history, renowned historian Andrew Pettegree tracks the evolution of news in ten countries over the course of four centuries, examining the impact of news media on contemporary events and the lives of an ever-more-informed public. The Invention of News sheds light on who controlled the news and who reported it; the use of news as a tool of political protest and religious reform; issues of privacy and titillation; the persistent need for news to be current and for journalists to be trustworthy; and people’s changing sense of themselves and their communities as they experienced newly opened windows on the world. “This expansive view of news and how it reached people will be fascinating to readers interested in communication and cultural history.” —Library Journal (starred review)
