Jahrhundert sah man die Anfälle der Mädchen als Wiederaufleben des religiösen Eifers an (keine diabolische, sondern göttliche Visionen) , Paul Boyer und Stephen Nissenbaum erklären die Vorkommnisse anhand eines soziologischen Interpretationsansatzes und identifizieren die Gemeinde von Salem Village und deren divergierende Parteiungen als Ausgangspunkt für die Hexenverfolgungen , und Bernhard Rosenthal hält die Möglichkeit des wissentlichen Betruges seitens der Mädchen für die wahrscheinlichste Möglichkeit .
