Book excerpt: Who were the non-Western women delegates who took part in the drafting of the United Nations Charter and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) from 1945-1948? Which member states did these women represent, and in what ways did they push for a more inclusive language than "the rights of Man" in the texts? This book provides a gendered historical narrative of human rights from the San Francisco Conference in 1945 to the final vote of the UDHR in the United Nations General Assembly in December 1948. It highlights the contributions by Latin American feminist delegates, and the prominent non-Western female representatives from new member states of the UN.
Book Synopsis Terrorism and Exclusion from Refugee Status in the UK by : Sarah Singer
Download or read book Terrorism and Exclusion from Refugee Status in the UK written by Sarah Singer and published by Hotei Publishing. This book was released on 2015-04-21 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exclusion from refugee status for the suspected commission of serious crimes is a topic fraught with political and legal controversy. This is an area which sees the intersection of refugee law with international criminal and humanitarian law and, increasingly, measures taken in the fight against terrorism. In Terrorism and Exclusion from Refugee Status in the UK, Sarah Singer examines whether and how ‘terrorism’ has featured in the UK’s interpretation and application of the Refugee Convention’s ‘exclusion clause’. A number of sources are drawn on including questionnaires and interviews conducted with immigration judges, the Home Office’s exclusion unit and legal practitioners. She therefore provides an unprecedented and thorough analysis of the UK’s approach to asylum seekers suspected of serious criminality.
Book Synopsis OPEC in a Shale Oil World by : Mohamed Ramady
Download or read book OPEC in a Shale Oil World written by Mohamed Ramady and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-10-15 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: RAMADy, Mahdi OPec in a sHALE oil world –where to NEXT? With PREFACE by Dr. Sadad Al Husseini , former Board Member and Executive Vice President , Saudi Aramco. "OPEC has played an important role since its founding and continues to do so, but it has to recognize that this role has now changed and the organization has to adapt to new challenges. This book provides some possible solutions" Abdulsamad Al Awadhi, former Kuwait National Representative at OPEC . "Authoritative, well-informed, and excellent account of the role of OPEC in managing the oil market, present, past, and future" Hassan Qabazard, former Director of Research Division , OPEC. ". The call for action by Mohamed Ramady and Wael Mahdy in this book makes it clear that time, and not oil, is the precious commodity that is running out fast on OPEC’s side", Sadad Al Husseini , former Board Member and EVP Saudi Aramco “OPEC is dead. Long live OPEC”. The organization is now going through a mid life crisis in its 54 years of existence trying to figure out where it goes next in a world where OPEC has been relegated from being the energy swing producer, and Saudi Arabia as the ‘Sultan of the Swing,’ to one where it now faces competition from both non- OPEC traditional well as non-conventional shale producers. The Authors examine how OPEC has had to come to terms with the reality that the earlier decades ‘call on OPEC’ has now been replaced by a ‘call on non-OPEC’ and that a new ‘swing’ has been identified- the producers of shale oil. Drawing upon the Authors combined academic and practical first hand insights on OPEC, the book discusses how a new OPEC paradigm has emerged following the oil price rout of 2014, whereby the organization’s principal concern is now protecting market share, without being in charge unlike earlier fleeting periods of the late 1970’s, which brought with it a lasting myth of the OPEC cartel. Mohamed Ramady is Visiting Associate Professor, King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, Saudi Arabia; Wael Mahdi is Bloomberg OPEC Energy Correspondent.

Book Synopsis The Octagon Conference: September 1944 by : Joint History Office (U.S.)
Download or read book The Octagon Conference: September 1944 written by Joint History Office (U.S.) and published by Government Printing Office. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Octagon Conference (also called the Second Quebec Conference) occurred from September 12 to 16, 1944, in Quebec City, Canada. The primary attendees were President Franklin D. Roosevelt, British prime minister Winston S. Churchill, and the Combined Chiefs of Staff (CCS). Canadian prime minister Mackenzie King served as host for the conference but did not attend significant meetings. In addition to papers and meeting minutes from the Octagon Conference, this collection also includes minutes from the CCS meetings in London in June 1944. At the Octagon meetings, the participants discussed the invasion of France, including the progress of Operation Neptune, the cross-Channel portion of Operation Overlord. For the Pacific theater, the extent of British participation in the war against Japan was deliberated. One key discussion centered around the Burma campaign, including Operation Dracula, the airborne and amphibious attack on Rangoon. The most far-reaching exchange, however, concerned the allocation of postwar occupation zones in Germany. Octagon was one in a series of high-level conferences held by the US and British leaders in Washington, DC; Casablanca; Quebec; Cairo; Tehran; Malta; Yalta; and Potsdam to formulate the Allied grand strategy. At the Tehran, Yalta, and Potsdam conferences, the Soviet leader Joseph Stalin was also in attendance and played an important role. This book was released on 2012-05-23 with total page 772 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 2005 UNESCO Convention on Cultural Diversity is a landmark agreement in modern international law of culture. It reflects the diverse and pluralist understanding of culture, as well as its growing commercial dimension. Thirty diplomats, practitioners and academics explain and assess this important agreement in a commentary style. Article by article, the evolution, concepts, contents and implications of the Convention are analysed in depth and are complemented by valuable recommendations for implementation. In an unprecedented way, the book draws on the first-hand insights of negotiators and on the experience of practitioners in implementation, including international cooperation, and combines this with a good deal of critical academic reflection. It is a valuable guide for those who deal with the Convention and its implementation in governments, diplomacy, international organizations, cultural institutions and non-governmental organizations and will also serve as an important resource for academic work in such fields as international law and international relations.
