This book was released on 2013-05-01 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 155-mm Howitzer M1 was first produced in 1942 as a medium artillery piece. It saw service with the US Army during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War, before being replaced by the M198 Howitzer. The gun was used by the armed forces of many nations, and in some countries, it still remains in service. The 155-mm Howitzer was developed as an afterthought. A new carriage was under development for much of the 1930s for the existing World War I era M1918 until 1939 when it was realized that it did not seem logical to put a new carriage underneath an obsolete howitzer. Consequently, development began anew with a carriage designed to be used for the 155-mm Howitzer. This was completed by May 15th, 1941 when the Howitzer M1 on the Carriage M1 was standardized. The howitzer itself differed from the older model by a lengthened barrel of twenty calibers and a new breech mechanism. Uniquely, it was the sole 'slow-cone' interrupted screw mechanism to enter service after 1920. This meant that two separate movements were necessary to open the breech, versus the single movement of the 'steep cone' mechanism that simultaneously rotated and withdrew the breech. Created in 1943, this technical manual reveals a great deal about the 155-mm Howitzer M1's design and capabilities. Intended as a manual for those charged with operation and maintenance, it details many aspects of its assembly, ammunition, and accessories. Originally labeled restricted, this manual was declassified long ago and is here reprinted in book form. Care has been taken to preserve the integrity of the text.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The highly effective "Long Tom" heavy field gun could fire a 100 lb shell over 14 miles (24 km). Officially known as the "155mm gun M1A1 with M1A1 carriage and M5 limber," these famous artillery pieces, alongside their related 8-inch howitzer M1 versions, formed the backbone of U.S. Army heavy field artillery units during both World War II and Korea. These towed artillery weapons initially used the Mack NO 7-1/2-ton 6x6 as a prime mover, which was also augmented by the M4 high-speed tractor during the later stages of World War II. Eventually Long Toms were upgraded to the M125 10-ton 6x6 prime mover and proved to be remarkably mobile for towed heavy artillery. With their superior combinations of long range, pin-point accuracy, and massive firepower, these remarkable WWII artillery pieces served well into the Cold War-era. Featuring 227 archival photos, this new 80-page book documents the development and combat deployments of these iconic WWII weapons, as well as their essential caissons and heavy prime movers.--

Book excerpt: During WWII, various U.S. military agencies produced catalogues of equipment to fill the gaps left by the official War Department manuals, which led to inconsistent data appearing in different sources. In order to standardize information and properly catalogue all the equipment, the U.S. Ordnance Department put together a master guide, published here as The American Arsenal. All the information was checked and authenticated by reference to Ordnance Committee Minutes and similar authorities. No other single source provides so much accurate and authentic detail on U.S. weapons, ammunition, vehicles and other combat equipment, with an authoritative explanation of their development and introduction processes. Profusely illustrated with over 900 photographs and drawings, the facts and figures are set in context in the introduction by weapons expert Ian V. Hogg. This is an invaluable reference work for those interested in the military equipment of WWII.
