Download or read book Christmas in the Movies written by Jeremy Arnold and published by Running Press Adult. This book was released on 2018-10-09 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Turner Classic Movies presents a bucket list of the best and most beloved holiday films of all time, complete with spirited commentary, behind-the-scenes stories, and photos spanning eight decades of Christmastime favorites. Nothing brings the spirit of the season into our hearts quite like a great holiday movie. "Christmas films" come in many shapes and sizes and exist across many genres. Some, like It's a Wonderful Life and A Christmas Story, are perennials, while others, such as Die Hard, have only gradually become yuletide favorites. But they all have one thing in common: they use themes evoked by the holiday period - nostalgia, joy, togetherness, dysfunction, commercialism, or cynicism - as a force in their storytelling. Turner Classic Movies: Christmas in the Movies showcases the very best among this uniquely spirited strain of cinema. Each film is profiled on what makes it a "Christmas movie," along with behind-the-scenes stories of its production, reception, and legacy. Complemented by a trove of color and black-and-white photos, Turner Classic Movies: Christmas in the Movies is a glorious salute to a collection of the most treasured films of all time. Among the 30 films included: The Shop Around the Corner, Holiday Inn, Meet Me in St. Louis, It's a Wonderful Life, Miracle on 34th Street, White Christmas, A Christmas Story, National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, Home Alone, Little Women, and The Nightmare Before Christmas.

Book Synopsis 100 Favorite Classic Hollywood Films from the 1930s, 40s, and 50s by : Gary Koca
Download or read book 100 Favorite Classic Hollywood Films from the 1930s, 40s, and 50s written by Gary Koca and published by . This book was released on 2019-07-26 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In two past books that I have written, I focused on Forgotten Stars of the 1930s through the 1950s; that is stars who were pretty big movie stars in their time but that most people today would not be familiar with unless they were fans of classic Hollywood films of that era. I have also written books on great Western stars and on good and bad science fiction movies of the 1950s. In this book, however, I am concentrating on my favorite 100 movies of the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s. I have focused on American films only, with a few British films included also. (I am not an expert on foreign language films, so there are none in here.) Please note that this means that they are MY favorite films, not the BEST films of those three decades. For example, Citizen Kane (along with Casablanca) are generally regarded as the best two American films of the classic era. However, while I like Citizen Kane, it is just not one of my favorite films, and I'm not really sure why. Perhaps I never thought it really justified its ranking, so I dropped it from my list altogether. The same thing would apply to Vertigo, although I have two other Hitchcock films in the list. I will also admit that I am partial to certain genres of films, in particular the following: -Westerns-Film noir-Monster movies-Horror movies -Mysteries, particular those of Alfred Hitchcock-Swashbucklers-musicals
Book Synopsis Fellini: The Sixties by : Manoah Bowman
Download or read book Fellini: The Sixties written by Manoah Bowman and published by Running Press Adult. This book was released on 2015-10-27 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Style. Beauty. Passion. Vision. These are just a few of the words often used to describe the films of the single most celebrated director in Italy, and one of the most important directors the world has ever known -- Federico Fellini. Fifty years since their initial releases, his films of the 1960s still inspire, shock, and delight. More than just encapsulating the '60s, these films also helped define the style of the decade. With a staggering twelve Academy Award nominations between his four feature films during this period, Fellini reached the heights of fame, film artistry, and worldwide prominence. Studied, analyzed, and re-released over the years, these films continue to amaze each new generation that discovers them. Their impeccable style makes them timeless. Their images make them unforgettable. Their passion brings them to life. And their singular vision makes them unique in all of cinema. Fellini: The Sixties is a stunning photographic journey through the director's most iconic classics: La Dolce Vita, 8 1/2, Juliet of the Spirits, and Fellini Satyricon. Carefully selected imagery from the Independent Visions photographic archive, many published here for the first time, illuminate these films as they have never been seen before, and reveal fascinating details of the director's working style and ebullient personality. With more than 150 photographs struck from original negatives, these images spring to life from the page with the depth and quality of the films themselves. Complemented with insightful essays from contemporary writers, Fellini: The Sixties is a true testament to the man and his work, a remarkable compendium of the legendary filmmaker's greatest achievements. About TCM: Turner Classic Movies is the definitive resource for the greatest movies of all time. It engages, entertains, and enlightens to show how the entire spectrum of classic movies, movie history, and movie-making touches us all and influences how we think and live today.
