Book Synopsis English Prepositions Explained by : Seth Lindstromberg
Download or read book English Prepositions Explained written by Seth Lindstromberg and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2010-08-11 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This completely revised and expanded edition of English Prepositions Explained (EPE), originally published in 1998, covers approximately 100 simple, compound, and phrasal English prepositions of space and time – with the focus being on short prepositions such as at, by, in, and on. Its target readership includes teachers of ESOL, pre-service translators and interpreters, undergraduates in English linguistics programs, studious advanced learners and users of English, and anyone who is inquisitive about the English language. The overall aim is to explain how and why meaning changes when one preposition is swapped for another in the same context. While retaining most of the structure of the original, this edition says more about more prepositions. It includes many more figures – virtually all new. The exposition draws on recent research, and is substantially founded on evidence from digitalized corpora, including frequency data. EPE gives information and insights that will not be found in dictionaries and grammar handbooks.

Book Synopsis Preposition Placement in English by : Thomas Hoffmann
Download or read book Preposition Placement in English written by Thomas Hoffmann and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-01-06 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preposition placement, the competition between preposition stranding (What is he talking about?) and pied-piping (About what is he talking?), is one of the most interesting areas of syntactic variation in English. This is the first book to investigate preposition placement across all types of clauses that license it, such as questions, exclamations and wh-clauses, and those which exhibit categorical stranding, such as non-wh relative clauses, comparatives, and passives. Drawing on over 100 authentic examples from both first-language (English) and second-language (Kenyan) data, it combines experimental and corpus-based approaches to provide a full grammatical account of preposition placement in both varieties of English. Although written within the usage-based construction grammar framework, the results are presented in theory-neutral terminology, making them accessible to researchers from all syntactic schools. This pioneering volume will be of interest not only to syntacticians, but also second-language researchers and those working on variation in English.

Living languages constantly evolve over time, and reference books like Perfect Prepositions reflect these changes. Perfect Prepositions details different ways of defining the meanings of almost one hundred prepositions written in semantic categories and subcategories that are easy to understand and use in daily life. It's a useful resource for those desiring to improve their communication skills.
Book Synopsis Prepositions and Theology in the Greek New Testament by : Murray J. Harris

This book was released on 2017-05-30 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prepositions are important in the exegesis of the Greek New Testament, but they are at the same time very slippery words because they can have so many nuances. While Prepositions and Theology in the Greek New Testament rejects the idea of a “theology of the prepositions,” it is a study of the numerous places in the Greek New Testament where prepositions contribute to the theological meaning of the text. Offered in the hope that it might encourage close study of the Greek text of the New Testament, its many features include the following: Coverage of all 17 “proper” and 42 “improper” prepositions Explores both literary and broader theological contexts Greek font—not transliteration—used throughout Comprehensive indexes to hundreds of verses, subjects, and Greek words Discussion of key repeated phrases that use a particular preposition
Book Synopsis One Day in the Life of the English Language by : Frank L. Cioffi
Download or read book One Day in the Life of the English Language written by Frank L. Cioffi and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-03 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A one-of-a-kind handbook that uses a day in the life of written English to illustrate the benefits of effective grammar Generations of student writers have been subjected to usage handbooks that proclaim, "This is the correct form. Learn it"—books that lay out a grammar, but don't inspire students to use it. By contrast, this antihandbook handbook, presenting some three hundred sentences drawn from the printed works of a single, typical day in the life of the language—December 29, 2008—tries to persuade readers that good grammar and usage matter. Using real-world sentences rather than invented ones, One Day in the Life of the English Language gives students the motivation to apply grammatical principles correctly and efficiently. Frank Cioffi argues that proper form undergirds effective communication and ultimately even makes society work more smoothly, while nonstandard English often marginalizes or stigmatizes a writer. He emphasizes the evolving nature of English usage and debunks some cherished but flawed grammar precepts. Is it acceptable to end a sentence with a preposition? It is. Can you start a sentence with a conjunction? You can. OK to split an infinitive? No problem. A grammar and usage handbook like no other, One Day in the Life of the English Language features accessible chapters divided into "Fundamentals," "Fine Tuning," and "Deep Focus," allowing readers to select a level most suited to their needs. It also includes a glossary, a teachers' guide, and a section refuting some myths about digital-age English.

Book Synopsis The Semantics of English Prepositions by : Andrea Tyler
Download or read book The Semantics of English Prepositions written by Andrea Tyler and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-06-05 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using a cognitive linguistics perspective, this book provides a comprehensive, theoretical analysis of the semantics of English prepositions. All English prepositions originally coded spatial relations between two physical entities; while retaining their original meaning, prepositions have also developed a rich set of non-spatial meanings. In this study, Tyler and Evans argue that all these meanings are systematically grounded in the nature of human spatio-physical experience. The original 'spatial scenes' provide the foundation for the extension of meaning from the spatial to the more abstract. This analysis articulates an alternative methodology that distinguishes between a conventional meaning and an interpretation produced for understanding the preposition in context, as well as establishing which of several competing senses should be taken as the primary sense. Together, the methodology and framework are sufficiently articulated to generate testable predictions and allow the analysis to be applied to additional prepositions.
