Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 'subject' of a sentence is a concept that presents great challenges to linguists. Most languages have something which looks like a subject, but subjects differ across languages in their nature and properties, making them an interesting phenomenon for those seeking linguistic universals. This pioneering volume addresses 'subject' nature from a simultaneously formal and typological perspective. Dividing the subject into two distinct grammatical functions, it shows how the nature of these functions explains their respective properties, and argues that the split in properties shown in 'ergative' languages (whereby the subject of intransitive verbs is marked as an object) results from the functions being assigned to different elements of the clause. Drawing on data from a typologically wide variety of languages, including English, Hebrew, Tagalog, Inuit and Acehnese, it explains why, even in the case of very different languages, certain core properties can be found.

This book was released on 2024-10-23 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Routledge Handbook of Human Research Ethics and Integrity in Australia highlights why it is important to look at the subject of human research ethics and integrity within the Australian context, and what the Australian perspective can offer to all researchers in the social sciences and humanities globally. Australia has one of the world’s most rigorous ethics governance frameworks. This edited collection comprises 35 chapters, compiled with the aim of presenting human research ethics and integrity in a way that can be readily understood and applied by undergraduate and postgraduate students, early career and seasoned researchers, Human Research Ethics Committee members, and those who work in the administration of human research ethics. Chapters that focus on research ethics with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are likely to be of great interest to an international audience interested in Indigenous research ethics more broadly. This collection will act as a prism through which ethical ‘first principles’ can be seen afresh from the vista of contemporary Australian research ethics frameworks. The issues raised in this collection are likely to resonate beyond the Australian context and will speak to researchers and educators in a variety of settings who find themselves grappling with thorny ethical issues ranging from the rapid evolution of data security and privacy concerns to research about cultural heritage and ethical approaches to Indigenous cultural and intellectual property.

Observations, interviews, focus groups, document analysis and music-making as data reveal unique potential to inform the field of music education. The capabilities of digital technologies to collect and analyze data, as well as the challenges they present, are examined in the context of an increasingly digitized American society. Guidance is provided to the researcher to understand their role and the ethical landscape they navigate. Collecting, Analyzing, and Reporting Data is the second of three paperback volumes derived from the original Oxford Handbook of Qualitative Research in American Music Education, which outlines the history of qualitative research in music education and explores the contemporary use of qualitative approaches in examining issues related to music teaching and learning.
