Book Synopsis From weather observations to atmospheric and climate sciences in Switzerland by : Saskia Willemse
Download or read book From weather observations to atmospheric and climate sciences in Switzerland written by Saskia Willemse and published by vdf Hochschulverlag AG. This book was released on 2016-06-02 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2016 the Swiss Society for Meteorology (Schweizerische Gesellschaft für Meteorologie, SGM) celebrates its 100th anniversary. Compared to other meteorological societies it is not among the oldest ones. Nevertheless, meteorology has gone through such a remarkable evolution in the past 100 years that it is worthwhile to take a look back and recapitulate the developments of both science and SGM – and to reveal their interaction. The idea of this book is to give an overview of what has happened in the field of atmospheric sciences in Switzerland since the first systematic long-term meteorological observations until today.
Book Synopsis Meteorology of Tropical West Africa by : Douglas J. Parker
Download or read book Meteorology of Tropical West Africa written by Douglas J. Parker and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2017-04-24 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Meteorology of tropical West Africa: the Forecasters’ Handbook presents the science and practice of weather forecasting for an important region of the tropics. Connecting basic theory with forecasting practice, the book provides a unique training volume for operational weather forecasters, and is also suitable for students of tropical meteorology. The West African region contains a number of archetypal climatic zones, meaning that the science of its weather and climate applies to many other tropical regions. West Africa also exhibits some of the world’s most remarkable weather systems, making it an inspiring region for students to investigate. The weather of West Africa affects human livelihoods on a daily basis, and can contribute to hardship, poverty and mortality. Therefore, the ability to understand and predict the weather has the potential to deliver significant benefits to both society and economies. The book includes comprehensive background material alongside documentation of weather forecasting methods. Many examples taken from observations of West African weather systems are included and online case-studies are referenced widely.
Book Synopsis Mountain Environments in Changing Climates by : Martin Beniston
Download or read book Mountain Environments in Changing Climates written by Martin Beniston and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-11-01 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Home to large numbers of people, sources of water, centres of tourism, and sensitive ecological zones, mountain environments share distinctive climactic characteristics. Once regarded as economically non-viable regions, mountains now attract major investment as sites of tourism, hydro-power and communication routes. This book brings together some of the current work on the physical and human ecology of mountain environments, the impacts of climate change, the processes involved and their observation and prediction.
Book Synopsis High Performance Computing in Science and Engineering '10 by : Wolfgang E. Nagel
Download or read book High Performance Computing in Science and Engineering '10 written by Wolfgang E. Nagel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-12-14 with total page 594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the state-of-the-art in simulation on supercomputers. Leading researchers present results achieved on systems of the High Performance Computing Center Stuttgart (HLRS) for the year 2010. The reports cover all fields of computational science and engineering, ranging from CFD to computational physics and chemistry to computer science, with a special emphasis on industrially relevant applications. Presenting results for both vector systems and microprocessor-based systems, the book makes it possible to compare the performance levels and usability of various architectures. As HLRS operates the largest NEC SX-8 vector system in the world, this book gives an excellent insight into the potential of vector systems, covering the main methods in high performance computing. Its outstanding results in achieving the highest performance for production codes are of particular interest for both scientists and engineers. The book includes a wealth of color illustrations and tables.

Book excerpt: This report serves as a "how to" guide for corporate decision makers as they navigate rapidly-changing global markets. The report presents an in-depth look at the development and implementation of corporate strategies that take into account climate-related risks and opportunities. The report is comprised of two main sections: 1. The Synthesis Report lays out a step-by-step approach for incorporating climate change into corporate strategies and is primarily based on results from a 100-question survey completed by 31 companies. 2. The Case Studies section features the lessons learned at each step of the strategy development process by these six companies: Cinergy (now Duke Energy), Swiss Re, DuPont, Alcoa, The Shell Group, Whirlpool Corporation.
Book Synopsis Climate Time Series Analysis by : Manfred Mudelsee
Download or read book Climate Time Series Analysis written by Manfred Mudelsee and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-08-26 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climate is a paradigm of a complex system. Analysing climate data is an exciting challenge, which is increased by non-normal distributional shape, serial dependence, uneven spacing and timescale uncertainties. This book presents bootstrap resampling as a computing-intensive method able to meet the challenge. It shows the bootstrap to perform reliably in the most important statistical estimation techniques: regression, spectral analysis, extreme values and correlation. This book is written for climatologists and applied statisticians. It explains step by step the bootstrap algorithms (including novel adaptions) and methods for confidence interval construction. It tests the accuracy of the algorithms by means of Monte Carlo experiments. It analyses a large array of climate time series, giving a detailed account on the data and the associated climatological questions. This makes the book self-contained for graduate students and researchers.
Book Synopsis German Northern Theater of Operations 1940-1945 [Illustrated Edition] by : Earl Ziemke
Download or read book German Northern Theater of Operations 1940-1945 [Illustrated Edition] written by Earl Ziemke and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 469 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: [Includes 23 maps and 31 illustrations] This volume describes two campaigns that the Germans conducted in their Northern Theater of Operations. The first they launched, on 9 April 1940, against Denmark and Norway. The second they conducted out of Finland in partnership with the Finns against the Soviet Union. The latter campaign began on 22 June 1941 and ended in the winter of 1944-45 after the Finnish Government had sued for peace. The scene of these campaigns by the end of 1941 stretched from the North Sea to the Arctic Ocean and from Bergen on the west coast of Norway, to Petrozavodsk, the former capital of the Karelo-Finnish Soviet Socialist Republic. It faced east into the Soviet Union on a 700-mile-long front, and west on a 1,300-mile sea frontier. Hitler regarded this theater as the keystone of his empire, and, after 1941, maintained in it two armies totaling over a half million men. In spite of its vast area and the effort and worry which Hitler lavished on it, the Northern Theater throughout most of the war constituted something of a military backwater. The major operations which took place in the theater were overshadowed by events on other fronts, and public attention focused on the theaters in which the strategically decisive operations were expected to take place. Remoteness, German security measures, and the Russians’ well-known penchant for secrecy combined to keep information concerning the Northern Theater down to a mere trickle, much of that inaccurate. Since the war, through official and private publications, a great deal more has become known. The present volume is based in the main on the greatest remaining source of unexploited information, the captured German military and naval records. In addition a number of the participants on the German side have very generously contributed from their personal knowledge and experience.
