When one of these elements is suffering because of stress or negative influences, then your health, your outlook on life, and your ability to serve are all impaired. Book excerpt: A combination of the books "Mental Health Fight of the Heroes In Blue" and "101 Health Tips For Police Officers" that is perfect not just for police officers but also for the future recruits. This is not to say, "Forget everything you learned in the academy!" Why would anyone advise that? Elements of criminal law and how to work your weapon and handcuffs among the other things you learn are extremely crucial for your safety and security. "This profession can chew you up and spit you out," said Police Chief N. Gang in a conversation I had with him recently. Did I mention he has been in law enforcement for over 30 years! Beyond the undeniably crucial skills we gather from the police academy, is a human being, you! While emphasizing and combining the concepts discussed in "Mental Health Fight of the Heroes In Blue" and "101 Health Tips For Police Officers", this book endeavors to capture the silent thieves, taking time to deal with the pebble in the shoe. Back in rookie school (2007) and as of the writing of this book, there has been little to no mention of financial freedom, or how to cope with on-the-job stress or exposure to trauma. This book is your first step toward taking better care of yourself so you can ultimately be the hero for those who call 911. Strive for wellness, success, and happiness with the strategies in this field manual.

Book excerpt: Rookie Log: The Personal Thoughts and Experiences of Three Rookie Fremont, California, Police Officers During Field Training When he began this series of interviews for Tri-City Voice newspaper, William Marshak had very little knowledge of the training necessary to become a police officer in his community. He asked local police department officials if it would be possible to interview an officer in training. The result is Rookie Log: The Personal Thoughts and Experiences of Three Rookie Fremont, California, Police Officers During Field Training. Fascinating in-depth conversations with these novice police officers record their thoughts as they progress from simulation and theory of academy training to the reality of assisting and protecting their community as professional peace officers. Perfect for those interested in entering law enforcement or just learning more about these guardians of the community, Marshak's book is an exciting account, in the officers' own words, of the legal, moral, and emotional struggles on the path to becoming confident and valued members of the law enforcement team.

Book excerpt: As a police officer, you are in a brotherhood much like the marines or a special operations-type soldier. You would do anything for your brother, even die for them. In the years 2016 and 2017, there were a lot of rookie cops getting killed in the line of duty. This hurts you to the core. One night I was crying out to the Lord and asked him, "Lord, what can I do to help? My brothers and sisters are being killed every day." I was beside myself with grief, and I believe I heard God speak to me in a still, small voice, "Give them your knowledge. Give them your years of experience." So I wrote a book. During this time, survival shows were all the rage. So the title Survival Handbook for Rookies (Rookie Cops) was born. I've held onto it, waiting for the Lord to say when, and I believe he is saying, "The time is now!" If this book helps one person, it will have been all worth it.

Book excerpt: Most people assume that being a cop is like what they see on TV. They think it's a high drama fast-paced career with car chases and gunfights. The reality isn't quite so intense. Law enforcement is a dangerous profession, but the majority of police work is pretty dull. Police work is mostly a compilation of speaking with people who don't want to speak with you or who are distraught over why they need to speak to you in the first place. There are gunfights, SWAT calls, car chases, robberies in progress, and several other calls that raise the blood pressure. But by-in-large, the majority of police work is responding to late reports and recording what happened in an objective, chronological, and accurate way. Just like with the work, people often have a misconception about the types of people who become cops. They think that only people with extreme personalities can be police officers when really the exact opposite is true. Most cops are normal blue-collar workers who share a common set of core principles. They're all honest, hard-working, brave, and logical people who have good intentions, but who sometimes enter into a law enforcement career without understanding what law enforcement is all about.I wrote this book because I've seen too many people get into police work without understanding what it is. They start their careers with noble intentions only to be torn down and destroyed from the stress of the job or their own failed ambitions. Police work isn't necessarily difficult, but it carries a large amount of responsibility. The weight of that responsibility is too much for some people, and it's misunderstood by others. This book is a complete guide to understanding what the job is as a police officer. It will tell you what it means to be a cop as well as how to be successful at modern policing. It breaks down your responsibilities in ways that remove any confusion and it'll prepare you for what you should do in any given situation. I wrote this book using basic, direct language so it's impossible to misinterpret; It's a book written by a cop for cops. This book is specifically aimed at educating new cops, or anyone who's considering a career in law enforcement. But, with that being said, it's also extremely beneficial for veteran police officers as a means of strengthening their skills and helping them transition from being an average cop, into being a consummate professional. The skills and insights I share throughout this book are pieces of information that can create a foundation for new officers or sharpen pre-existing but as-of-yet unrealized potential in veterans. The subjects covered in this book were specifically chosen for inclusion because they're the most germane to success in law enforcement. Examples of the topics covered in this book include officer safety, departmental perception, gaining voluntary compliance, criminal interdiction, interview and interrogation, and critical incidents. I've also added in a few chapters about how to get hired as a cop and how to promote once you've started working so you can increase your likelihood of rising to the position that you want within your department. I've learned throughout my career that police work is less about protecting and serving and more about doing your job reliably without making waves or opening your department up to liability. That's the kind of information I'll teach you throughout this book. It's the kind your agency won't come out and say, but it's the most important information you could know to be successful in law enforcement. Reading this book will give you a safeguard against poor training. It'll keep you from becoming a departmental scapegoat if you're unlucky enough to have substandard training officers. To be a cop is to be the vanguard of your community. Thank you for considering a career in law enforcement. I look forward to the honor of teaching you how to do the job.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this exceptional new third edition, the author has retained much of the practical "everyone goes home" approach as in previous editions, but adds depth and potentially lifesaving information to keep the police officer safe and secure. The book provides a general orientation for survival, and details the specifics the intelligent police professional must master in order to survive the many types of risky situations he will be exposed to over a career. The book is painstakingly thorough in its approach to officer survival in an era where peacekeepers are required to be highly transparent and accountable in all of their actions. Every use of force by a law enforcement officer will be closely scrutinized. This is one reason why it is important that today's officer has access to every viable tactic and technique that may prevent the need for force in the first place. The book details everything from searching an arrested individual to searching a building; arresting a 300-pound outlaw biker to a surly teenager. Techniques and strategies discussed in the book include personal preparation for risk reduction, vehicle stops and contacts, defusing disturbances, domestic violence, burglaries and structure searches, barricades and hostage-takers, vehicle pursuits, ambush attacks, emotionally disturbed and mentally ill persons, prisoner control and transport, terrorist threats, off-duty confrontations, and reducing the emotional risks involved. At the end of each vital chapter, a quick and concise "Risk Reduction Checklist" is presented. These chapter summaries are excellent for review and merit rereading by the police professional intent on surviving to a healthy retirement. An Appendix has been included containing informative accounts of police deaths, culled from the "Law Enforcement Officers Killed and Assaulted Report" put together by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Other accounts are also found at the end of each chapter. Each one makes a point by way of grim example, yet every tragedy described can help save the life of an alert police officer who might otherwise become one more statistic. This unique and comprehensive text will be invaluable to all law enforcement professionals, investigators, policymakers, and police academics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does it feel to be in a high-speed car chase? What is it like to shoot someone? What do cops really think about the citizens they serve? Nearly everyone has wondered what it’s like to be a police officer, but no civilian really understands what happens on the job. “400 Things Cops Know” shows police work on the inside, from the viewpoint of the regular cop on the beat—a profession that can range from rewarding to bizarre to terrifying, all within the course of an eight-hour shift. Written by veteran police sergeant Adam Plantinga, “400 Things Cops Know” brings the reader into life the way cops experience it—a life of danger, frustration, occasional triumph, and plenty of grindingly hard routine work. In a laconic, no-nonsense, dryly humorous style, Plantinga tells what he’s learned from 13 years as a patrolman, from the everyday to the exotic—how to know at a glance when a suspect is carrying a weapon or is going to attack, how to kick a door down, how to drive in a car chase without recklessly endangering the public, why you should always carry cigarettes, even if you don’t smoke (offering a smoke is the best way to lure a suicide to safety), and what to do if you find a severed limb (don’t put it on ice—you need to keep it dry.) “400 Things Cops Know” deglamorizes police work, showing the gritty, stressful, sometimes disgusting reality of life on patrol, from the possibility of infection—criminals don’t always practice good hygiene—to the physical, psychological, and emotional toll of police work. Plantinga shows what cops experience of death, the legal system, violence, prostitution, drug use, the social causes and consequences of crime, alcoholism, and more. Sometimes heartbreaking and often hilarious, “400 Things Cops Know” is an eye-opening revelation of what life on the beat is really all about.
