Book Synopsis Politics of Interculturality by : Fred Dervin
Download or read book Politics of Interculturality written by Fred Dervin and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2011-09-22 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Politics of Interculturality fulfills the need for a thorough and critical evaluation of the notion of interculturality. Taking institutional and educational discourses on the ‘intercultural’ as its main focus, the volume captures vigorous debates currently underway across four continents – the Americas, Europe, Asia and Oceania. The volume’s prominent and emerging scholars all agree that change is needed in the way interculturality is used and conceived, especially at a time when the ‘Other’ is an increasing issue of social concerns and political debates. The authors break with tradition by teasing out the hidden assumptions and implications of interculturality – making explicit the implicit presence of the tired old notion of ‘culture’. They also look to establish new ways of engaging with interculturality. The book will be of substantial interest to a wide range of readers who are interested in international communication, education, migration studies, critical race studies, cultural studies, anthropology, linguistics and business. Undergraduates and novice researchers will also find invaluable advice on how to research politics of interculturality.

Book Synopsis Automatic Text Simplification by : Horacio Saggion
Download or read book Automatic Text Simplification written by Horacio Saggion and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-05-31 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thanks to the availability of texts on the Web in recent years, increased knowledge and information have been made available to broader audiences. However, the way in which a text is written—its vocabulary, its syntax—can be difficult to read and understand for many people, especially those with poor literacy, cognitive or linguistic impairment, or those with limited knowledge of the language of the text. Texts containing uncommon words or long and complicated sentences can be difficult to read and understand by people as well as difficult to analyze by machines. Automatic text simplification is the process of transforming a text into another text which, ideally conveying the same message, will be easier to read and understand by a broader audience. The process usually involves the replacement of difficult or unknown phrases with simpler equivalents and the transformation of long and syntactically complex sentences into shorter and less complex ones. Automatic text simplification, a research topic which started 20 years ago, now has taken on a central role in natural language processing research not only because of the interesting challenges it posesses but also because of its social implications. This book presents past and current research in text simplification, exploring key issues including automatic readability assessment, lexical simplification, and syntactic simplification. It also provides a detailed account of machine learning techniques currently used in simplification, describes full systems designed for specific languages and target audiences, and offers available resources for research and development together with text simplification evaluation techniques.

Book Synopsis Intercultural Communication Education by : Fred Dervin
Download or read book Intercultural Communication Education written by Fred Dervin and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-04-23 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the notion of interculturality in education and supports scholars in their discovery of the notion. Continuing the author’s previous work, the book urges (communication) education researchers and educators to 'interculturalize' interculturality. This book corresponds to the authors’ endeavor to complexify the way interculturality is discussed, expressed, (co-)constructed and advocated in different parts of the world and in different languages. To interculturalize interculturality is to expand the way we deal with the notion as an object of scientific and educational discourse, noting the dominating voices and allowing for silenced voices that are rarely heard around interculturality to emerge. This book is based on broken realities and (the authors’) rebellious dreams. As two researchers and educators with a long experience examining discourses of interculturality, this book represents the authors’ program for the future of intercultural communication education. The book is divided into three 'tableaus' (living descriptions) depicting today’s 'broken' realities of interculturality and two 'rebellious' dreams of what it could be in research and education.

Book Synopsis Students, Staff and Academic Mobility in Higher Education by : Mike Byram
Download or read book Students, Staff and Academic Mobility in Higher Education written by Mike Byram and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2009-03-26 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Academic mobility in higher education is an old phenomenon, but it has become a high profile issue as the numbers of students and staff engaged, and the number of countries involved, has increased hugely in the last few decades. For this reason and many others – political, cultural and educational – this book reports research on the many facets of the experience and people involved, both now and in the past. The emphasis in research has so far tended to focus on contemporary student mobility but this collection deliberately includes articles on mobile staff, because the question of mobility is a matter for universities and higher education in its entirety and not just a matter of bringing new students into existing and unchanging lectures, laboratories and seminars. Despite the fact that universities are and have been international institutions in their composition from the beginning, universities became in the 19th and 20th century de facto national institutions. This has changed and continues to change in the 21st century, for many reasons, but often financial, as universities seek to enhance their budgets in a globalised economy, and students seek to enhance their employment chances by acquiring qualifications with a difference. However, even if the starting point is financial, nonetheless the chapters in this book demonstrate that the effects of mobility are much more far-reaching. The effects are on host universities, on the university community of staff and students, on the ways in which staff and students understand the nature of university study, on the ways students may or may not integrate with a local community. By experiencing something different—for institutions, an influx of students with different ideas about academic study, for students an interaction with ‘locals’ and with other ‘internationals’, for staff a challenge to their assumptions about teaching and learning—all see themselves in a new light and are often forced to change. This book charts the changes which are happening now and will undoubtedly continue for the foreseeable future. It therefore offers all involved a reflection on their own experience and practice and the means of improving them.
Book Synopsis Linguistics for Intercultural Education by : Fred Dervin
Download or read book Linguistics for Intercultural Education written by Fred Dervin and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2013-04-24 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The issue of intercultural learning has been tackled, amongst others, in the fields of education, language education and applied linguistics. In spite of the extensive literature on the subject, there is still much which needs to be done to address the ways in which linguistics itself can contribute to intercultural education. The 8 chapters by internationally-renowned scholars highlight different ways of using it both in the classroom and in researching intercultural education. The following approaches are covered: Critical Discourse Analysis, Énonciation, Conversation Analysis and Pragmatics. The introduction to the volume also offers a useful and comprehensive survey of the debates around the polysemic notion of the ‘intercultural’. The book will appeal to an international readership of students, scholars and professionals across a wide range of disciplines, interested in making intercultural education more effective.
