Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the years since the first edition of this well-known monograph appeared, the subject (the geometry of the zeros of a complex polynomial) has continued to display the same outstanding vitality as it did in the first 150 years of its history, beginning with the contributions of Cauchy and Gauss. Thus, the number of entries in the bibliography of this edition had to be increased from about 300 to about 600 and the book enlarged by one third. It now includes a more extensive treatment of Hurwitz polynomials and other topics. The new material on infrapolynomials, abstract polynomials, and matrix methods is of particular interest.

Through different examples and based on different research and contributions, this book presents an original first overview of “water communication”. It sets its academic value as one distinct scientific domain and provides tips and practical tools to professionals. The book contributes to avoid mixing messages, targets and discourses when setting communication related to water issues. The book facilitates coordination within the water sector and its organizations as water is a wide field of applications where inadequate words and language understanding between its stakeholders is one of the main obstacles today. Water Communication provides and describes: a general outlook and retrospective of the history of the water sector in terms of communication the landscape of organizations communicating on water and classification of topics the differences between communication, information, mediation, raising awareness examples of communication campaigns on water Water Communication is a vital resource for communication managers, utility managers, policy makers involved in water management and students in water sciences and environment. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Observability and Scientific Realism It is commonly thought that the birth of modern natural science was made possible by an intellectual shift from a mainly abstract and specuJative conception of the world to a carefully elaborated image based on observations. There is some grain of truth in this claim, but this grain depends very much on what one takes observation to be. In the philosophy of science of our century, observation has been practically equated with sense perception. This is understandable if we think of the attitude of radical empiricism that inspired Ernst Mach and the philosophers of the Vienna Circle, who powerfully influenced our century's philosophy of science. However, this was not the atti tude of the f ounders of modern science: Galileo, f or example, expressed in a f amous passage of the Assayer the conviction that perceptual features of the world are merely subjective, and are produced in the 'anima!' by the motion and impacts of unobservable particles that are endowed uniquely with mathematically expressible properties, and which are therefore the real features of the world. Moreover, on other occasions, when defending the Copernican theory, he explicitly remarked that in admitting that the Sun is static and the Earth turns on its own axis, 'reason must do violence to the sense' , and that it is thanks to this violence that one can know the tme constitution of the universe.

Book excerpt: In The Asanids. The Political and Military History of the Second Bulgarian Empire (1185-1280), Alexandru Madgearu offers the first comprehensive history in English of a state which played a major role in the evolution of the Balkan region during Middle Ages. This state emerged from the rebellion of two peoples, Romanians and Bulgarians, against Byzantine domination, within a few decades growing to a regional power that entered into conflict with Byzantium and with the Latin Empire of Constantinople. The founders were members of a Romanian (Vlach) family, whose intention was to revive the former Bulgarian state, the only legitimate political framework that could replace the Byzantine rule.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this second edition of Natural Food Colorants two new chapters have been added and we have taken the opportunity to revise all the other chapters. Each of the original authors have brought up to date their individual contributions, involving in several cases an expansion to the text by the addition of new material. The new chapters are on the role of biotechnology in food colorant production and on safety in natural colorants, two areas which have undergone considerable change and development in the past five years. We have also persuaded the publishers to indulge in a display of colours by including illustrations of the majority of pigments of importance to the food industry. Finally we have rearranged the order of the chapters to reflect a more logical sequence. We hope this new edition will be greeted as enthusiastically as the first. It remains for us, as editors, to thank our contributors for undertaking the revisions with such thoroughness and to thank Blackie A&P for their support and considerable patience. G. A. F. R. J. D. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr Vlasto reviews the early history of the various Slav peoples (from about AD 500 onwards) and traces their gradual emergence as Christian states within the framework of either West or East European culture. Special attention is paid to the political and cultural rivalry between East and West for the allegiance of certain Slav peoples, and to the degree of cultural exchange within the Slav world, associated in particular with the use of the Slav liturgical language. His examination of all the Slav peoples and extensive use of original source material in many different languages enables Dr Vlasto to give a particularly comprehensive study of the subject.
