Book Synopsis Marine Conservation by : G. Carleton Ray
Download or read book Marine Conservation written by G. Carleton Ray and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-10-11 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Providing a guide for marine conservation practice, Marine Conservation takes a whole-systems approach, covering major advances in marine ecosystem understanding. Its premise is that conservation must be informed by the natural histories of organisms together with the hierarchy of scale-related linkages and ecosystem processes. The authors introduce a broad range of overlapping issues and the conservation mechanisms that have been devised to achieve marine conservation goals. The book provides students and conservation practitioners with a framework for thoughtful, critical thinking in order to incite innovation in the 21st century. "Marine Conservation presents a scholarly but eminently readable case for the necessity of a systems approach to conserving the oceans, combining superb introductions to the science, law and policy frameworks with carefully chosen case studies. This superb volume is a must for anyone interested in marine conservation, from students and practitioners to lay readers and policy-makers." —Simon Levin, George M. Moffett Professor of Biology, Department of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology, Princeton University
Book Synopsis Global-Regional Linkages in the Earth System by : Peter D. Tyson
Download or read book Global-Regional Linkages in the Earth System written by Peter D. Tyson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global environmental change occupies a central niche in the pantheon of modern sciences. There is an urgent need to know and understand the way in which global biogeochemical cycles have changed over different time scales in the past and are likely to do so in the future. Equally important, it is necessary to determine the extent to which natural variability and that induce by anthropogenic activities are bringing about change. A number of international co-operative scientific programmes ad dress these issues. Chief among them are the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme (IGBP), the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) and the Inter national Human Dimensions Programme (IHDP) for global change. This book is one of a series of IGBP syntheses drawing together findings in global environmental change over the past decade or so. One focus of IGBP activities is the System for Analysis, Research and Training (START). Co-sponsored by the WCRP and IHDP, START establishes regional research networks for global change science in developing countries, stimulates and carries out global change research in developing regions of the world, and builds capacity to undertake such research at personal, institutional and regional levels. Several regional global change networks have been established, and much regional research has been accomplished in the last five years or so. In this book, work relating to four of the older START regions, Southern Africa, South Asia, Southeast Asia and East Asia, will be used as case studies to illustrate regional-global linkages in Earth System Science.

Download or read book The Quest for Unity written by Sizo Nkala and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-10-04 with total page 477 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Regional integration was identified many years ago as being critical to Africa’s quest to overcome its colonially induced underdevelopment. To encourage this, several potentially significant programmes or projects have been stillborn or inadequately implemented. A network of relatively stable Regional Economic Communities (RECs) has been established, and one of its most ambitious initiatives – the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) – is now being ‘operationalised’. Written in the context of a global economy emerged in stagflation – a combination of stagnation and inflation – this book provides a deeper insight into pertinent conceptual and theoretical issues of vital importance to Africa’s development. It also presents case studies of several of the RECs, as well as the processes involved in constructing the AfCFTA. The subject matter of this book includes – African lingua franca and African knowledge systems The African Centres for Disease Control and Prevention Regional integration: Mission impossible?
