Book excerpt: Appropriate for use at all levels from elementary school through college, this unique guide combines the best field-tested approaches to values, character, citizenship, and moral education into a single comprehensive, easy-to-implement model for contemporary values education. This model incorporates time-tested methods for instilling and modeling traditional values such as respect, responsibility, and compassion with more modern methods aimed at helping students learn to think for themselves, make their own responsible decisions, and develop the skills needed for good citizenship and moral literacy. This is a timely and significant book packed with 100 specific strategies, hundreds of practical ideas, dozens of thought-provoking cartoons and quotes, and numerous examples from real elementary and secondary schools. Designed to work hand in hand with a teacher's current academic, subject matter objectives, this approach does not depend on a separate module or curriculum focused on values. The author explains how teachers can integrate values education and subject matter learning so they enhance one another, and provides numerous examples of subject matter activities and lessons that also meet the objectives of a values program. These activities are effective, motivating, and interesting for students and teachers -- they make the classroom come alive. K-12 Classroom Teachers. Download or read book Ethics, Morals and Values in Education written by Plyson Manyani Muzumara and published by Dorrance Publishing. This book was released on 2018-01-09 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ethics, Morals and Values in Education By: Plyson Manyani Muzumara Many people in our country feel children today are growing up in an environment of moral distortion and decay. Children are exposed to evil influences from different dimensions within and outside of their communities. It is not uncommon to listen to the news and hear of corruption, thefts, child defilement, examination malpractices, gender-based violence and similar vices. We see a gradual erosion of values and morals in our society, but little effort is being spent to change it. Reflecting upon our culture’s history should give us the opportunity to prepare our teachers to assume the role of moral educators as well as the conveyers of subject content. This book focuses on the need to introduce and promote ethics, morals and values education in Zambia at both school and teacher education levels. It draws information generated by the author from schools, colleges of education and universities. Without a well-defined education policy in favour of promoting pupil and teacher ethics, morals and values in our learning institutions, efforts to promote the same in our education system are doomed to fail.

Book Synopsis The Moral of the Story by : John H. Lockwood
Download or read book The Moral of the Story written by John H. Lockwood and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 1999 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem this project attempts to solve is to develop a workable moral education in light of the clash between religious forms of moral education and U.S. Supreme Court decisions concerning them. The concept of story and storytelling has been suggested as a unifying focus for disparate prescriptions for moral education. Several recent approaches to moral storytelling have been proposed. The approaches of William Bennett, Nel Noddings, and Herbert Kohl are among those which have attempted to combine moral education and storytelling within the last decade. Bennett is identified with other theorists whose primary concern is the moral content of a story. Noddings is identified as a process theorist, whose primary concern is the process of moral storytelling, not the content. Kohl is identified as a reflection theorist, whose approach challenges tradition in the hope of creating a more moral society. Each one of these three approaches attempts to provide a comprehensive program of moral education, but they fall short of that goal. The purpose of this project, then, is to construct a storytelling moral education program that improves upon earlier approaches. Using the three levels of moral thinking posited by R.M. Hare, a three-level approach to moral storytelling is proposed. The intuitive, critical, and meta-ethical levels of moral thinking that Hare refers to are used to frame a new, three-level, approach to moral storytelling. The three-level approach combines content, process, and reflection into a unified prescription for moral education. Thus, a more comprehensive plan for moral education through storytelling is developed, one that respects traditional forms of moral education while remaining within the parameters set by the U.S. Supreme Court.
