Book excerpt: Drawing heavily from the experiences of successful students, this guide to going back to college addresses adult students’ unique challenges and concerns. Everything adults need to know to navigate the path from working life to student life, particularly the many changes in the admissions process over the past 10 years, is covered, including collecting and filling out application forms, writing a winning admissions essay, and applying for and securing financial aid. The book features dozens of actual essay examples from adult students. Uncensored views are provided of both the successes and failures of previous students, helping new students avoid pitfalls and apply with confidence. In addition, valuable advice from admission officers and adult student program directors is included. Topics covered include how to select the right program, be it undergraduate or graduate study, a certificate or extension program, part-time learning, or distance education; how to take advantage of previous education, training, or life experience to improve an application and earn additional credit; and financing an adult education through scholarships, financial aid, and employers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume, we examine the ways student services professionals in institutions of higher education can best meet the needs of adult learners. Most of the discussion here is situated in four-year colleges and universities, although we recognize that community colleges play a large role in the higher education of adults. However, we made the decision to focus on four-year and post-graduate institutions because we believe that these institutions often are focused on traditional-aged students despite growing adult enrollments, and are most in need of guidance about how to serve this ever-growing population. Students in higher education often are defined as "adult learners" or "non-traditional students" if they are 25 twenty-five years of age or older, and, more significantly, if they have taken on what we consider adult roles and responsibilities, such as caring for children and other family members, working full-time, or participating heavily in community activities. Adult students typically are not focused on campus life in the same way that younger, "traditional-aged" students are. Therefore, our theories of the importance of the campus experience outside the classroom to student development usually do not hold for adults. Yet, adults can and do learn and develop through their engagement in formal higher education. Adults bring experiences and wisdom into the classroom, and receive a learning experience that informs their own professional and personal practices. This is the 102nd issue of the quarterly journal New Directions for Student Services.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does it mean to be a cog in the educational system? This compilation of stories from a long and distinguished career in education will help those entering the field—or still in it—to understand the many pitfalls, heartbreaks, and limitations they’ll face. But it will also be eye-opening for anyone with a stake in the world of education: parents, administrators, consultants, teachers, and just about anyone who hopes to live in a society where the education system actually serves those it’s supposed to. Organized into ten lively chapters, it tackles the hard questions such as: getting hired, sexual harassment, racism towards teachers and students, paternalism, toxic positivity, dealing with crazy coworkers, and self-care. It speaks to the gaps, hidden agendas, and rules of the public education system from the point of view of a committed, long-time educator. Biting, insightful, infused with righteous anger...and frequently hilarious, 100 Ways to Kill a Teacher works as an early warning system to new teachers, as a guide for current educators, and as a great resource for parents.

Book excerpt: From an Ivy League dean and a college admissions expert, a guide to help parents support their children as they navigate their way to college The College Conversation is a comprehensive resource for mapping the path through the college application process that provides practical advice and reassurance to keep both anxious parents and confused children sane and grounded. Rather than adding to the existing canon of "How to Get In" college guides or rankings, Eric Furda and Jacques Steinberg provide a step-by-step approach to having the tough conversations on this topic with less stress and more success. The book is organized around key discussions and themes that trace the chronological arc of admissions and financial aid--beginning before the assembly of a list of potential colleges and continuing through the receipt of decisions--with a final section that includes advice on the first year of college. The topics include preliminary conversations about the search, and specifically how parents can think about their children's interests and what kind of college would best suit them; choosing a college (based on its curriculum, culture, and community); writing the most effective essays; assessing acceptances, including considerations of finances and aid; and making the transition from high school to college life. The College Conversation will provide parents, students, and counselors with the credible, level-headed information often missing in this process, as well as a much-needed dash of perspective borne of experience.

Book excerpt: Appropriate for use at all levels from elementary school through college, this unique guide combines the best field-tested approaches to values, character, citizenship, and moral education into a single comprehensive, easy-to-implement model for contemporary values education. This model incorporates time-tested methods for instilling and modeling traditional values such as respect, responsibility, and compassion with more modern methods aimed at helping students learn to think for themselves, make their own responsible decisions, and develop the skills needed for good citizenship and moral literacy. This is a timely and significant book packed with 100 specific strategies, hundreds of practical ideas, dozens of thought-provoking cartoons and quotes, and numerous examples from real elementary and secondary schools. Designed to work hand in hand with a teacher's current academic, subject matter objectives, this approach does not depend on a separate module or curriculum focused on values. The author explains how teachers can integrate values education and subject matter learning so they enhance one another, and provides numerous examples of subject matter activities and lessons that also meet the objectives of a values program. These activities are effective, motivating, and interesting for students and teachers -- they make the classroom come alive. K-12 Classroom Teachers.
