Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a contribution to the study of morphological productivity, that is, the property of word-formation processes whereby new words are created to satisfy a naming need. It presents an up-to-date picture of this phenomenon, characterising its major attributes and addressing neighbouring theoretical concepts like availability, profitability or lexicalisation. Links are also established between those notions and N+N compounding, a word-formation process regarded as very productive but traditionally overlooked in studies of this type. Unlike other productivity surveys, mostly directed at affixation, a corpus of N+N compounds is here compiled to which the mainstream models of productivity are applied. This allows to detect the pros and cons of those proposals and to propose a model of productivity. Two measures, Indicator of Profitability (π) and Trend of Profitability (Π), are introduced which can be applied across word-formation processes and are able to compute their productivity based on semantic categories.

Book excerpt: Protein insertion and translocation, intracellular traffic and sorting of membranes and their components, and lipid-protein interactions were the main topics of the Advanced Study Institute on "Molecular Dynamics of Membranes", which was held in June 1995 in Cargese, Corsica, France. The course, co-sponsored by NATO and FEBS, was the fifth in a series that started in 1987 and takes place every two years in the Institut d'Etudes Scientifiques in Cargese. This Institute, ideally situated and fully equiped for this type of scientific meeting has greatly contributed to the great success of the courses. Of course, also the outstanding contributions of a large number of well known scientists and the enthousiastic participation of excellent graduate students and postdocs has given the "Cargese Lectures on Biomembranes" a firm reputation in the scientific community. The present proceedings is more than just a reflection on the information presented in the Course. First of all it contains a number of extensive reviews of specific areas of interest. Noteworthy are the articles dealing with: • the general mechanisms of protein transport, the roles of invariant chain in antigen presentation, protein import and export in E. coli, protein folding and the role of chaperones, chloroplast and mitochondrial protein import, • membrane traffic in general and during mitosis, and with respect to membrane lipids: lipid domain formation, lipases: an extensive review about structure and properties, phospholipase A2 and bioactive lipids, phospholipid transfer proteins, • phospholipid localization and mobility and, finally, new strategies for protein reconstitution.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this dueling two novel sensation a low-end sci-fi tale about navigating the future work place and debtor?s prison, follows the lead of a present day office horror story. A depressed ad writer for a weekly paper in Los Angeles watches his hopes for a meager life erode away under the bristling greed of incompetent and clueless management. As a catharsis, he writes a novel that follows his own life very closely, but is set four years in the future where everyone works for commission only. Anyone in debt, caught with intoxicants, or who becomes sick falls into the black hole of work camps for the poor, or hospital prisons where self-surgery is the only help available. The camps are massive subsidiaries of the major fast food industries, and prisoners spend their days working giant hog nut grinding machines and curly fries mixers at a pay rate that is guaranteed to keep them inside for years. The one way out of these massive fast food factories? Distinguish yourself as a soldier in the combat of the culture wars. And our hero, Ralph Pearcy, attempts to do just that. The last word in modern office novels, the prescient gallows humor of this one will have you choking before sending you home with your ass kicked.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How is it that the most carefully-laid business strategies can go horribly wrong when put into practice? Robert Rowland Smith's answer, based on years of experience in high-level consultancy, is that 'reality eats strategy for breakfast': strategy, based on projections and assuming business is a rational pursuit, can't deal with the messy reality of life. More helpful are these practical questions that can help you plan what to do when your business comes into contact with reality. From learning the lessons of the past (rather than fixating on the future) to finding out what your business is really about, he explains the real-life factors that lead to success or failure. Including many new examples from the front line, from all around the world, The Reality Test will help you establish yourself as more effective and distinctive than your competitors, who follow the same rigid theoretical avenues. Whether you ask 'Are you making enough of your weaknesses?' or 'Are you 100% productive 100% of the time?', it's time to stop living in strategy La-La Land and face reality.

Book excerpt: An astounding project of analysis on more than one hundred translations of ancient philosophical texts, this index of words found in the Ancient Commentators on Aristotle series comprises some 114,000 entries. It forms in effect a unique dictionary of philosophical terms from the post-Hellenistic period through to late antiquity and will be an essential reference tool for any scholar working on the meaning of these ancient texts. As traditional dictionaries have usually neglected to include translation examples from philosophical texts of this period, scholars interested in how meanings of words vary across time and author have been ill served. This index fills a huge gap, therefore, in the lexical analysis of ancient Greek and has application well beyond the reading of ancient philosophical commentaries. Bringing together the full indexes from 110 of the volumes published in Bloomsbury's Ancient Commentators on Aristotle series, McKirahan has combined each word entry and analysed how many times particular translations occur. He presents his findings numerically so that each meaning in turn has a note as to the number of times it is used. For meanings that are found between one and four times the volume details are also given so that readers may quickly and easily look up the texts themselves.
