Book excerpt: Dorothy Yoshida is a telepath, and a really rather good one at that. She's also a scientist, and when a small planet begins to manifest some unusual signs she is sent to investigate. The planet is more than it seems, and on further investigation the scientists begin to suspect it has been artificially altered. But despite their suspicions the only life they can detect is on the surface, none of which has advanced far above the level of animals. And despite the hopes of mankind to find something which will help them in a burgeoning war against other species, there seems to be nothing there to aid them. With Dorothy's arrival, however, they are in for some surprising discoveries.

Book Synopsis Great Circle of Mysteries by : Misha Gromov
Download or read book Great Circle of Mysteries written by Misha Gromov and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2018-08-11 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This visionary and engaging book provides a mathematical perspective on the fundamental ideas of numbers, space, life, evolution, the brain and the mind. The author suggests how a development of mathematical concepts in the spirit of category theory may lead to unravelling the mystery of the human mind and the design of universal learning algorithms. The book is divided into two parts, the first of which describes the ideas of great mathematicians and scientists, those who saw sparks of light in the dark sea of unknown. The second part, Memorandum Ergo, reflects on how mathematics can contribute to the understanding of the mystery of thought. It argues that the core of the human mind is a structurally elaborated object that needs a creation of a broad mathematical context for its understanding. Readers will discover the main properties of the expected mathematical objects within this context, called ERGO-SYSTEMS, and readers will see how these “systems” may serve as prototypes for design of universal learning computer programs. This is a work of great, poetical insight and is richly illustrated. It is a highly attractive read for all those who welcome a mathematical and scientific way of thinking about the world.
Download or read book Project STAR written by Harold P. Coyle and published by Kendall Hunt. This book was released on 2001 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Universe in Your Hands Project STAR (Science Teaching through its Astronomical Roots) is an astronomy course that also teaches real-world math and physics. Project STAR capitalizes on students' inherent interest in the limitless universe that surrounds them. This second edition uses a new approach that is consistent with the philosophy of the authors: students learn science better by making measurements and observations than by memorizing "facts." Each chapter begins with questions to test preheld views on certain subjects. Students then use measurements and observations to explore the models in the chapters. Questions are sprinkled throughout the book to test understanding along with cartoons to leaven the learning with humor. Hands-on activities play an essential role in this 1-year course. In completing these hands-on activities, students will: make observations of the skies build models use models to explain observations and make predictions find everyday applications for such models The Student Text for Project STAR, Second Edition includes updated information, is easier to use and visually more appealing. The material is laid out with new illustrations for greater clarity and understanding. A color plate section supports activities and text related to the study of spectra. A reference section has also been added. It lists astronomy resources on the web. The Astronomy Explorer CD-ROM is included with the Student Text. This interactive CD-ROM contains movies and animations related to astronomy. The student exercises provide an excellent foundation for understanding the complexities of the universe. A glossary of terms is also part of the CD.

Book Synopsis Essential Astrophysics by : Kenneth R. Lang
Download or read book Essential Astrophysics written by Kenneth R. Lang and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-05-24 with total page 651 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essential Astrophysics is a book to learn or teach from, as well as a fundamental reference volume for anyone interested in astronomy and astrophysics. It presents astrophysics from basic principles without requiring any previous study of astronomy or astrophysics. It serves as a comprehensive introductory text, which takes the student through the field of astrophysics in lecture-sized chapters of basic physical principles applied to the cosmos. This one-semester overview will be enjoyed by undergraduate students with an interest in the physical sciences, such as astronomy, chemistry, engineering or physics, as well as by any curious student interested in learning about our celestial science. The mathematics required for understanding the text is on the level of simple algebra, for that is all that is needed to describe the fundamental principles. The text is of sufficient breadth and depth to prepare the interested student for more advanced specialised courses in the future. Astronomical examples are provided throughout the text, to reinforce the basic concepts and physics, and to demonstrate the use of the relevant formulae. In this way, the student learns to apply the fundamental equations and principles to cosmic objects and situations. Astronomical and physical constants and units as well as the most fundamental equations can be found in the appendix. Essential Astrophysics goes beyond the typical textbook by including references to the seminal papers in the field, with further reference to recent applications, results, or specialised literature.

Book Synopsis No Need for God by : Peter William Clement
Download or read book No Need for God written by Peter William Clement and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-12 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because Catholic Theologians consciously fail to revise and rebuild the intellectual architecture of their faith -- and because they deliberately refuse to accommodate the discoveries of science over the 3000 years since their God was invented by a tribe of unenlightened shepherds and farmers, they are forced to maintain an inflexible policy of deliberate obscurantism. I use arguments from science (in layman's terms)- evolutionary biology, geology, archaeology, anthropology, particle physics, astronomy, and cosmology- to demonstrate the validity of this proposition. I have been a student (and victim) of Catholic Theology for more than 65 years. Over the last seven years (since my retirement) I have devoted nearly all of my time to learning and understanding the revelations of modem science - and to recognizing how incompatible they are with the infallible dogmas of the Pope and his minions. I have a Ph.D. in English, and I have completed 42 years of teaching on the college level. I am now Professor emeritus of English at Elms College in Chicopee, Massachusetts. My book is devoted to the questions which all peoples have tried to answer since the dawn of civilization: Where do we come from? Where are we going to? What are we here for? What the hell's it all about? The findings of modem neuroscience prove- with carloads of experimental and observational data -- that, without the material substrate of the brain, there can be no consciousness: that is, there can be no soul that survives the death of the body. The correlative point is that we now have empirical proof that God did not magically inject a supernatural soul into a single-celled zygote at the precise moment of its conception- because there is no such entity. Catholic Theologians cannot recognize the truth empirically demonstrated by modem neuroscience -- the fact that there is no such entity as a supernatural soul. Their only recourse is to maintain a policy of inflexible obscurantism - in plainer words, a ''theology of systematic prevarication.

Download or read book Future History written by Igor Kryan and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2006-09-01 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You can live in paradise on Earth. How can this be even remotely possible? Isn't it what every normal human being hopes for? We all have strong internal and sub-consciousness desire to stay healthy, to be forever young and live in peaceful paradise like conditions. We really do not look forward to the conditions of aging, suffering, and death. Does it make any sense at all, that we work so hard all of our life - wanting to acquire the best education, trying to earn a fortune, attempting to build a happy family life - only to eventually lose it all because of aging, sickness and death? That doesn't seem reasonable, does it? Is there a real purpose to life that makes more sense? Is it universal fate of everything to be born and die? If so there must be a real purpose of achievements we trying to accomplish and a real purpose of the future. What our Earth will look like in 10, 50, 100 or 1,000 years from now? Unfortunately, renowned philosophers, politicians, futurologists and theologians have failed to provide satisfying answers and real solutions to all of the problems that are facing mankind today and will face tomorrow. Unit now. Read this controversial book to understand the true meaning of the future and the life itself.
Book Synopsis Christ and the Maya Calendar by : Kevin Dann
Download or read book Christ and the Maya Calendar written by Kevin Dann and published by SteinerBooks. This book was released on 2009-03 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cosmic Christianity describes the relationship between the earthly and supra-earthly cosmic worlds by showing the relationship between the cosmos--as expressed in the movements of the stars--and the activities of Christ during his three years of ministry on Earth. The "gesture" of each astrological planet during those years is worked out and correlated with specific acts of the Christ as recorded in the Gospels. The apparent "looping" movements of Mercury, for example, are connected with the "seven signs" of St. John's gospel. The author goes on to explore the many ways in which these healing acts, which have been inscribed in the heavens, continue to work in evolution through the events of history and through our individual human lives. By studying this, we begin to understand our responsibility for developing the new Christian mysteries and, consequently, renewing the starry cosmos. Sucher presents a real foundation for modern star wisdom. Topics include the evolution of cosmology; the origins of the planetary symbols; our new relationship to the stars as revealed in human lives and historical events; and the role of the Archangel Michael in our individual relationship to the stars. This is an excellent place to begin one's study of the stars and their meaning for both our individual lives and for the world.
