Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: That he was a medieval king who, with a progressive bent of mind, dared to look ahead to find that common ground for all his people to stand together. That he was a medieval king who is today tempting us to look back into the past to see our future through his eyes. Ever since the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance government came to power in 2014 with Narendra Modi as the prime minister, an organised campaign began to vilify Emperor Akbar and the Mughals. While there were always voices that tried to project the Mughals as just another 'Islamic empire', ignoring the civilisational impact they had on India, even for them Akbar was a shining light in an otherwise era of darkness. Those talking in terms of easy binaries always found a 'good Muslim' in Akbar and a 'bad Muslim' in Aurangzeb. Academics and other liberals who could have countered this incorrect portrayal did not do it, dismissing such claims as mere screeches by the fringe that do not deserve any attention. But with the Hindu Right assuming political power, the fringe today has become the mainstream. And Akbar is no longer the 'good Muslim'. Why is there such hatred for Akbar, once the most loved king in India? What was the journey like, from being great to not-so-great? And how is this India different from Akbar's Hindustan? Has he become irrelevant in an India where growing Hindu nationalism threatens to alter the nature of the Indian state from a secular republic to a theocracy? Or is Akbar even more relevant today given the backdrop of hate that we all find ourselves in? Allahu Akbar seeks to find answers to these questions while providing a profile sketch of the emperor, his empire and his times.

CHAPTER XII The Principles And Internal Administration Of Akbar 'The success of the three branches of the government, and the fulfilment of the wishes of the subject, ' writes the author of the Ain-i-Akbari, ' whether great or small, depend upon the manner in which a king spends his time.' Tried by this test, the cause of the success of Akbar as a man and as a ruler can be logically traced. Not only was he methodical, but there ran through his method a most earnest desire to think and do what was right in itself and conducive to the great aim of his life, /the building of an edifice which, rooted in the hearts of people, would be independent of the personality of the ruler. Before I attempt to state in detail the means he adopted to attain this end, I propose to say a few words on a subject which may be said to underlie the whole question, the conformation of his mind and the manner in which it was affected by matters relating to the spiritual condition of mankind. Than this there cannot be any more important investigation, for it depended entirely on the structure of his mind, and its power to accept without prejudice, and judge impartially, views differ- ing from those of his co-religionists, whether the chief of the Muhammadans, few in number when compared with the entire community, could so obtain the con- fidence and sympathy of the subject race, doomed to eternal perdition in the thought of all bigoted Musal- mans, as to overcome their prejudices to an extent which, had they been consulted previously, they would have declared impossible. The period was y undoubtedly unfavourable to the development of I what may be called a liberal policy in this matter. /The Muhammadans were not only conquerors, but conquerors who had spread their.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Akbar, Emperor of India: A Picture of Life and Customs From the Sixteenth Century When we wish to understand a personality we are in the habit of ascertaining the inherited characteristics, and investigating the in uences exercised upon it by religion, family, environment, education, youthful impressions, ex perience, and so forth. Most men are easily comprehen sible as the products of these factors. The more inde pendent of all such in uences, or the more in opposition to them, a personality develops, the more attractive and inter esting will it appear to us. At the first glance it looks as if the Emperor Akbar had developed his entire character from himself and by his own efforts in total independence of all in uences which in other cases are thought to deter mine the character and nature of a man. A Mohammedan, a Mongol, a descendant of the monster Timur, the son of a weak incapable father, born in exile, called when but a lad to the government of a disintegrated and almost annihi lated realm in the India of the sixteenth century, - which means in an age of perfidy, treachery, avarice, and self seeking, - Akbar appears before us as a noble man, suscep tible to all grand and beautiful impressions, conscientious, unprejudiced, and energetic, who knew how to bring peace and order out of the confusion of the times, who through out his reign desired the furtherance of his subjects' and not of his own interest, who while increasing the privileges of the Mohammedans, not only also declared equality of rights for the Hindus but even actualized that equality, who in every conceivable way sought to conciliate his sub.
