Ron is telling them the rumors that the Titans have all escaped Tartarus and are gearing up with Cronus for a final battle with the Olympians. It is Gaia, the wife of Uranus—and grandmother to Zeus and most of the Olympians. Gaia is on the side of the Olympians, partly because she believes that they will be better for the planet than Cronus, but also because she is angry with her son. He has imprisoned his three brothers: Briar, Kottos, and Gyes. She says if the Olympians free them from Tartarus, they will help the Olympians defeat Cronus. But can the three brothers be trusted? And can the Olympians defeat Cronus once and for all?

Book excerpt: Wilkes College (now Wilkes University) football was the talk of the nation in the late 1960s when the team went undefeated from Oct. 9, 1965 to Oct. 18, 1969. During this five-season run, the Colonels won 32 consecutive games. captured or shared five Middle Atlantic Northern Division titles; were awarded two Lambert Bowls in 1966 and 1968, symbolic of eastern small college supremacy; and honored by the Washington, DC Touchdown Club in 1969 with its "Timmie Award," as the most outstanding team in the nation. Guiding the team was Head Coach Roland C. "Rollie" Schmidt, a Wilkes-Barre, PA native, who was a stickler for detail, technique and preparation and masterminded one of the greatest successes in small college football history. Many of his players during that era were the first generation of their families to earn a college degree. A majority of these individuals came from the Greater Wyoming Valley area, that surrounds Wilkes-Barre, PA where Wilkes University is located. Some were sons and grandsons of Anthracite coal miners, who came to Northeastern Pennsylvanian from Europe in the late 19th and early 20th centuries in search of better life for their families. The Wyoming Valley of Pennsylvania has a rich high school football tradition that dates back to the 1880s. Football was one of the first sports that was introduced by the College in 1946 when it was known as Bucknell Jr, College, soon to be renamed Wilkes College in 1947. "Zeus and the Boys" is the story of Rollie Schmidt and the team's special time in history. The book is about members of those teams and how their football experience provided important lessons for their professional career growth.

Book excerpt: The dreams of many returning World War II veterans, optimistic baseball promoters, and recent high-school graduates were set into motion more than 70 years ago with the formation of the Colonial League, a Class B minor-league circuit that operated from 1947 to 1950 in Connecticut, New York, and New Jersey cities. For war vets who lost valuable playing years serving in the military, the Colonial offered a long-shot chance to make the minor leagues. It also attracted players who had brief call-ups to the majors during the war, but now were expendable as veterans returned to reclaim their roster spots. These groups were joined by talented young Latin American players, making their debuts in Organized Baseball, and seasoned black players, who were now breaking into the minor and major leagues after being denied this opportunity for so many years. In the Colonial's inaugural 1947 season, there were only 17 black players on minor league teams across the United States; six of these players played in the Colonial League. The book is a blend of local history, post-war baseball, labor strife, bouncing paychecks, a team bus with no brakes and much fascinating detail.

Kursk, TX and surrounding area, settled by German Russian immigrants in the early 20th century, suffered greatly from the dual impact of the Dust Bowl years and the Great Depression, only to be saved by two other newcomers from Europe who are great believers in capitalism and the American way of life. After making a vast fortune starting on the streets of New Orleans, Louisiana, and around Beaumont, Texas, Russian immigrant Robert Barzinsky and his junior partner, Jack Barnett, a native of Ireland, move to Kursk. They ranch, drill for oil, and create a secret project to prepare for a major worldwide disaster with help of several techies. Government agencies and sinister organizations in the United States and around the world closely follow the activities in and around the small town.

This author and novel are ready for prime time and the big time.” —Publishers Weekly, BookLife Prize Critic’s Report Meet Phoebe Katz, a twelve-year-old foster kid from New York City who’s been bounced around the system her entire life. Things happen around Phoebe, but it’s not like they’re her fault! But when a statue of Athena comes to life, Phoebe gets the stunning news she’s the daughter of Zeus, has a twin brother named Perseus—and was sent away from ancient Greece as a baby to stop a terrible prophecy that predicted she would one day destroy Olympus. Athena warns Phoebe to stay in hiding, but when the vengeful god Ares kidnaps her beloved social worker, Phoebe has no choice—she has to travel back to ancient Greece and rescue him! There, Phoebe and her friends Angie and Damian discover a new prophecy, one that may fix everything. The catch: Phoebe has to collect talismans from six Greek monsters, including the fang from a nine-headed hydra, a talon from the Nemean lion, and a feather from the sphinx. No problem for a girl with the power to call up lightning bolts and change the weather! But can Phoebe collect them all and stop the prophecy before she destroys Olympus?

Book excerpt: “Masterful . . . an epic tale of backbiting, shady deal-making, and greed [that] reads like a John Grisham novel.”—The Wall Street Journal A real-life legal thriller as timeless as a Greek tragedy, tracing the downfall of one of America’s most famous lawyers and exposing the dark side of Southern politics—from the author of When Evil Lived in Laurel Dickie Scruggs was arguably the most successful plaintiff’s lawyer in America. A brother-in-law of former U.S. Senate majority leader Trent Lott, Scruggs made a fortune taking on mass tort lawsuits against Big Tobacco and the asbestos industries. He was hailed by Newsweek as a latter-day Robin Hood and was portrayed in the movie The Insider as a dapper aviator-lawyer. Scruggs’s legal triumphs rewarded him lavishly, and his success emboldened both his career maneuvering and his influence in Southern politics—but at a terrible cost, culminating in his spectacular fall, when he was convicted for conspiring to bribe a Mississippi state judge. Based on extensive interviews, transcripts, and FBI recordings never made public, The Fall of the House of Zeus uncovers the Washington legal games and power politics: the swirl of fixed cases, blocked investigations, judicial tampering, and a zealous prosecution that would eventually ensnare not only Scruggs but his own son, Zach, in the midst of their struggle with insurance companies over Hurricane Katrina damages. Featuring Trent Lott and Jim Biden, brother of then-Senator Joe Biden, in supporting roles, with cameos by John McCain, Al Gore, and other Washington insiders, Curtis Wilkie’s account of this uniquely American tragedy reveals the seedy underbelly of institutional power.

Book excerpt: The Daughters of Zeus, Book One "Persephone is a fun, imaginative, smart retelling of my favorite myth, fusing modern culture with a rich world of magic." Amazon Top Reviewer, Molly Ringle, Author of Persephone's Orchard. One day Persephone is an ordinary high school junior working at her mom's flower shop in Athens, Georgia. The next she's fighting off Boreas, the brutal god of Winter, and learning that she's a bonafide goddess--a rare daughter of the now-dead Zeus. Her goddess mom whisks her off to the Underworld to hide until Spring. There she finds herself under the protection of handsome Hades, the god of the dead, and she's automatically married to him. It's the only way he can keep her safe. Older, wiser, and far more powerful than she, Hades isn't interested in becoming her lover, at least not anytime soon. But every time he rescues her from another of Boreas' schemes, they fall in love a little more. Will Hades ever admit his feelings for her? Can she escape the grasp of the god of Winter's minions? The Underworld is a very nice place, but is it worth giving up her life in the realm of the living? Her goddess powers are developing some serious, kick-butt potential. She's going to fight back. "I enjoyed Hades and Persephone's sweet romantic relationship. Persephone has her flaws, but she is likable and learns along the way. The author's writing is descriptive and entertaining. I am looking forward to the next book." Rebecca Foote @ Paranormal Muse "Everyone needs to check this book out, I can't rave enough about it, Bevis is definitely a new talent to keep an eye out for. I give this 5/5." Sarah Brown @ Head Stuck in a Book "I found this book to be a fun and fast-paced adventure through Greek mythology with a modern twist." Stephanie Ward @ A Dream Within a Dream "From the first paragraph, I was enthralled with this story. I read it all in one sitting and enjoyed every minute of it. What a great spin on a Greek myth! Move over Rick Riordan!" Amazon Top Reviewer, Rita Webb, Author of Daughter of the Goddess "This story will completely suck you in . . . This book is the first of a trilogy, and I can't wait to see what's in store for these amazing characters." Amazon Top Reviewer, Melissa Groeling, Author of Beauty Marks Kaitlin Bevis spent her childhood curled up with a book and a pen. If the ending didn't agree with her, she rewrote it. Because she's always wanted to be a writer, she spent high school and college learning everything she could to achieve that goal. After graduating college with a BFA and Masters in English, Kaitlin went on to write The Daughters of Zeus series. kaitlinbevis.com
