Book Synopsis Dynamics of Superfluid Helium in Low-Gravity by : National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)

This book was released on 2018-07-02 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report summarizes the work performed under a contract entitled 'Dynamics of Superfluid Helium in Low Gravity'. This project performed verification tests, over a wide range of accelerations of two Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) codes of which one incorporates the two-fluid model of superfluid helium (SFHe). Helium was first liquefied in 1908 and not until the 1930s were the properties of helium below 2.2 K observed sufficiently to realize that it did not obey the ordinary physical laws of physics as applied to ordinary liquids. The term superfluidity became associated with these unique observations. The low temperature of SFHe and it's temperature unifonrmity have made it a significant cryogenic coolant for use in space applications in astronomical observations with infrared sensors and in low temperature physics. Superfluid helium has been used in instruments such as the Shuttle Infrared Astronomy Telescope (IRT), the Infrared Astronomy Satellite (IRAS), the Cosmic Background Observatory (COBE), and the Infrared Satellite Observatory (ISO). It is also used in the Space Infrared Telescope (SIRTF), Relativity Mission Satellite formally called Gravity Probe-B (GP-B), and the Test of the Equivalence Principle (STEP) presently under development. For GP-B and STEP, the use of SFHE is used to cool Superconducting Quantum Interference Detectors (SQUIDS) among other parts of the instruments. The Superfluid Helium On-Orbit Transfer (SHOOT) experiment flown in the Shuttle studied the behavior of SFHE. This experiment attempted to get low-gravity slosh data, however, the main emphasis was to study the low-gravity transfer of SFHE from tank to tank. These instruments carried tanks of SFHE of a few hundred liters to 2500 liters. The capability of modeling the behavior of SFHE is important to spacecraft control engineers who must design systems that can overcome disturbances created by the movement of the fluid. In addition instruments such as GP-B and STEP are very sensi...
Book Synopsis The Chase for Zero Gravity by : Rolf Sjöström
Download or read book The Chase for Zero Gravity written by Rolf Sjöström and published by BoD - Books on Demand. This book was released on 2019-09-12 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the first time, an explanation is provided to the driving force behind the four natural forces; gravitational force, magnetism, and the two types of intra-atomic nuclear forces. The consistent and coherent theory, sought by scientists working on the field, paves also the way to a logical explanation for the forces behind electricity, and for those we call for chemical bonds. In the latter, an explanation to something that controls the formation of all molecules - why atoms try to have 8 electrons on their outer shell - is provided. Because everything is "connected", we get also an explanation to phenomena, such as the tunnel effect, Cooper pair, superconductor and super liquid are. In addition, the book shows that the photon does not exist, and further, that is does not need to exist to explain changes in an atom's weight observed upon fusions/fissions. And the cosmic background radiation - despite all the fancy details scientific research has given us - is nothing but waves and noise from the Ocean of Strings. It is this Ocean, together with islands of stars and planets, that forms our Universe. See and understand the comprehensive picture of the reality. The book presents a clear and well-defined picture where all the puzzle pieces find their place. A picture, of which only parts of the outside have been revealed so far with the help of mathematical formulas, figures and graphs based on, among others, Lorentz's factor - a factor that according to the book should have never been given a stage. The photon does not exit, The Big Bang never happened, And the Emperor does, indeed, have no new clothes.

Book Synopsis Assessment of Directions in Microgravity and Physical Sciences Research at NASA by : National Research Council
Download or read book Assessment of Directions in Microgravity and Physical Sciences Research at NASA written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2003-07-11 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For thirty years the NASA microgravity program has used space as a tool to study fundamental flow phenomena that are important to fields ranging from combustion science to biotechnology. This book assesses the past impact and current status of microgravity research programs in combustion, fluid dynamics, fundamental physics, and materials science and gives recommendations for promising topics of future research in each discipline. Guidance is given for setting priorities across disciplines by assessing each recommended topic in terms of the probability of its success and the magnitude of its potential impact on scientific knowledge and understanding; terrestrial applications and industry technology needs; and NASA technology needs. At NASA's request, the book also contains an examination of emerging research fields such as nanotechnology and biophysics, and makes recommendations regarding topics that might be suitable for integration into NASA's microgravity program.
