Book excerpt: Meditations to help you stop seeking inner peace—and start experiencing it instead. Nirvana is not to be found in the fulfillment of endless desires, the analysis of profound thoughts, or even hours, days, or years of meditative contemplation. In fact, it is the very act of seeking to obtain happiness, peace, and enlightenment that keeps them out of reach. Nirvana in a Nutshell offers 157 Zen meditations to help you discover what you might be doing (or not doing) in your life to sabotage your goal of reaching inner peace, your own personal paradise. But, as Scott Shaw explains, a desire for Nirvana is like any other desire—a cause of suffering. Let go of the quest and become that which you truly seek and you will find your own Nirvana.

With a rare combination of freshness and lucidity, he delves into the origins and history of Zen to explain what it means for the world today with incredible clarity. Book excerpt: The Buddhist Voyage beyond Death comprehensively but concisely recapitulates the Three Turnings of the Dharma-Wheel: the central teachings of Buddha, of the Mahayana and of the Vajrayana; with a particular focus on the Mind-only tradition in relation to Buddhist cosmology, karma, and transmigration. With a Foreword by Dr. Robert Magliola, a specialist in comparative religion and author of Derrida on the Mend; On Deconstructing Life-Worlds: Buddhism, Christianity, Culture; and Facing Up to Real Doctrinal Difference, the book incorporates a modern scientific sensibility focusing on memory, time and space, matter and energy—using metaphors drawn from science and technology to illustrate spiritual concepts—and it provides an answer to those grappling with their life difficulties amid negative emotions of fear, anxiety, anger, and insecurity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An overview of Daoist texts on passive meditation from the Latter Han through Tang periods. Stephen Eskildsen offers an overview of Daoist religious texts from the Latter Han (25–220) through Tang (618–907) periods, exploring passive meditation methods and their anticipated effects. These methods entailed observing the processes that unfold spontaneously within mind and body, rather than actively manipulating them by means common in medieval Daoist religion such as visualization, invocations, and the swallowing of breath or saliva. Through the resulting deep serenity, it was claimed, one could attain profound insights, experience visions, feel surges of vital force, overcome thirst and hunger, be cured of ailments, ascend the heavens, and gain eternal life. While the texts discussed follow the legacy of Warring States period Daoism such as the Laozi to a significant degree, they also draw upon medieval immortality methods and Buddhism. An understanding of the passive meditation literature provides important insights into the subsequent development of Neidan, or Internal Alchemy, meditation that emerged from the Song period onward.

Book excerpt: The following is a layman ́s, an ordinary Zen traveler's, view of Zen Buddhism. The book is a work in development based mainly on own experiences and all the books that are listed in the bibliography. For me the following books have in particular been important: Paul Reps Zen Flesh, Zen Bones, Katsuki Sekidas Two Zen Classics, Mumonkan & Hekiganroku and Zen Training, and Stephen Hodge ́s Zen Master Class. The book is, of course, no textbook on Zen, but rather a presentation of highlights and reflections that I find important and I think, despite being moved out of context, can be of importance for others. For me, Zen in particular has meant that I (most of the time): * know and understand that I am a part of something much larger and whole, * am not looking for any specific divinities but am seeing the extraordinary in everyone and everything in the ordinary life and with my ordinary mind, * realize that dichotomizing, discriminating and constant assessment does not work. And please remember Lao Tzu's words, here in A. F. Price ́s interpretation: "The journey of a thousand miles starts from beneath one's feet."And also what John Daido Loori writes: "Just decide to do it. Not tomorrow - tomorrow always remain tomorrow. Do it now. Commit yourself now. Once you have committed yourself to doing it, it is done. The rest is only a matter of time."

In addition to the wisdom of these teachers, Baran, a former Zen monk and contributor to Tricycle: The Buddhist Review, offers his own inspirational commentary on experiencing nirvana.

Book excerpt: This is the first book that links the long-noted philosophical similarities of Taoism and Zen. The author traces the evolution of Ch'an (Zen) in China and later in Japan where the way was a term used interchangeably to describe the essence of both Taoism and Zen. The author points out that Taoist literature also formed a part of both Ch'an and Zen teaching and that the etymology of the Japanese word roshi evolved directly from a Chinese expression for Lao Tzu. These and other points are argued both historically and philosophically in a manner that will engage the reader. The Tao of Zen is a fascinating book that will be read and discussed by everyone interested in both Taoism and Zen.--
