Silver production served as a catalyst for northern expansion, creating mining towns that led to the development of new industries, markets, population clusters, and frontier institutions. Within these towns, the need for labor, raw materials, resources, and foodstuffs brought together an array of different ethnic and social groups—Spaniards, Indians, Africans, and ethnically mixed individuals or castas. On the northern edge of the empire, 350 miles from Mexico City, sprung up Zacatecas, a silver-mining town that would grow in prominence to become the "Second City of New Spain." Urban Indians in a Silver City illuminates the social footprint of colonial Mexico's silver mining district. In Silver Veins, Dusty Lungs, Rocio Gomez examines the detrimental effects of the silver mining industry on water resources and public health in the city of Zacatecas and argues that the human labor necessary to the mining industry made the worker and the mine inseparable through the land, water, and air. Tensions arose between farmers and the mining industry over water access while the city struggled with mudslides, droughts, and water source contamination. Silicosis-tuberculosis, along with accidents caused by mining technologies like jackhammers and ore-crushers, debilitated scores of miners. By emphasizing the perspective of water and public health, Gomez illustrates that the human body and the environment are not separate entities but rather in a state of constant interaction.

Ekholm (1909–1987) was curator of anthropology at The American Museum of Natural History, New York, and a former president of the Society for American Archaeology. Ignacio Bernal (1910–1992), former director of the Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia, Mexico, was director of the Museo Nacional de Antropología in Mexico and also a past president of the Society for American Archaeology. Volumes 10 and 11 describe the pre-Aztec and Aztec cultures of Mexico, from central Veracruz and the Gulf Coast, through the Valley of Mexico, to western Mexico and the northern frontiers of these ancient American civilizations. Book excerpt: The victory of the revolutionary army at Zacatecas devastated the morale of the federal army and planted the unthinkable idea of defeat in the mind of General Victoriano Huerta. Soon afterward he fled Mexico. Personal accounts of this pivotal battle are valuable, fragile documents available in only a handful of university archives. This book consists of English translations of two such documents, diaries of the battle. One account is by General Felipe Angeles, the highest-ranking officer of the Mexican military to oppose the coup d'etat against President Francisco I. Madero. Angeles was a respected academic, the director of the Colegio Militar de Chapultepec, the West Point of Mexico. When General Pancho Villa requested an artillery-general, Angeles volunteered. The successful partnership between the educated Angeles and Villa, the illiterate peasant leader, remains one of history's intriguing mysteries. The second account is by Major Federico Cervantes, an outstanding graduate of the military college, chosen by President Madero to create an air force for Mexico. He was in France preparing for this task when Madero was assassinated. He returned to Mexico to join those who opposed Huerta and became aide to General Angeles. Cervantes is also the author of an exhaustive biography of Felipe Angeles.
