The presented study used a test fishery in Yukon River District 1 near Emmonak to investigate catch composition of 7, 7.5, and 8-inch stretch-mesh drift gillnets. Age, sex, length, weight and girth (ASLWG) characteristics of Chinook salmon, and the species composition of the catch were examined. Comparisons among mesh sizes and with temporally congruent data from Lower Yukon River commercial and other test fisheries are included. Overall patterns indicate that larger mesh sizes catch a greater proportion of older fish, more Chinook relative to chum salmon, a greater proportion of females, and more larger fish with respect to length, weight and girth. This study provides important insight for management strategies and regulations concerning mesh size for Yukon River fisheries, as well as improves our understanding of potential effects of size-selective fishing.

Book excerpt: Concerns regarding the size and sex composition of Yukon River Chinook salmon, Oncorhynchus tshawytscha, have been expressed in public meetings for over a decade. However, reports of small size and low numbers of females have become increasingly common in recent years, and apprehension over the long-term health of the stock has grown within the drainage. In response to these reports, the Salmon Size Subcommittee of the US/Canada Yukon River Joint Technical Committee was formed and charged with advising the Committee, and thereby the US/Canada Yukon River Panel, with respect to changes in chinook salmon age, sex, and size composition. This report, which summarizes the findings of prior investigations and the scientific literature on factors that influence salmon morphology, represents the first product of the subcommittee.

During the years that the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) has collected scales from Yukon River Chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha many different readers have interpreted scale growth patterns and assigned ages. This study assessed the percent agreement and temporal consistency by ADF&G in estimating Chinook salmon ages from scales.

Book excerpt: Monitoring of juvenile Yukon River Chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha stocks rearing in the Northeastern Bering Sea (NBS) was initiated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in 2002 using a pelagic trawl survey program. Juvenile salmon were caught after their first summer at sea, and prior work has demonstrated a clear relationship between juvenile abundance and future adult returns, enabling the use of juvenile data in adult run size forecasts. The estimated abundance of juvenile Chinook salmon in the NBS was approximately 2,480,000 (SD 439,000) in 2017, below the 2003-2016 average. The mean proportion of 2017 NBS juvenile Chinook salmon originating in the total Yukon River and Canadian-origin Yukon River was 72% (SD 5%) and 42% (SD 4%), respectively. Abundance of total Yukon and Canadian-origin stocks were estimated as 1,774,000 (SD 338,000) and 1,049,000 (SD 207,000), respectively. Previously established and new adult Yukon River run reconstructions were used to evaluate relationships between juvenile abundance and adult abundance of spawners, runs, and returns. A marked decrease in juvenile production (juveniles per spawner) for total Yukon River and Canadian-origin stocks was below their 2003-2016 averages. These data were incorporated into forecast models to predict total adult run size. Forecasted total Yukon River Chinook salmon run sizes for 2018-2020 were 179,000-301,000, 170,000-297,000 and 114,000-230,000, respectively; forecasted Canadian-origin Chinook salmon run sizes for 2018-2020 were 65,000-102,000, 74,000-116,000 and 62,000-105,000, respectively. The date-adjusted length (FL) of juvenile Chinook salmon in the NBS was 204 mm in 2017, below the 2003-2016 average of 212 mm. Marine data on juvenile Chinook salmon clearly demonstrate that Yukon River Chinook salmon should be expected to remain in a relatively low productivity regime in the near future, but record-low run abundance is unlikely through 2020.

Book excerpt: Chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha recruitment in the Yukon and Kuskokwim (Y-K) region of western Alaska is important for subsistence and commercial harvest. Recruitment of Chinook salmon in this region has been unpredictable in recent years, and managers and subsistence harvesters are searching for answers. Chinook salmon require freshwater growth to smolt, and larger smolts are thought to have higher marine survival. In this study, I tested for correlations between freshwater growth and recruitment using measurements from scale digitizations. All analyses were conducted at the tributary scale, with one tributary representing each river system. Linear regressions were used to check for correlations between freshwater growth and Chinook salmon returns (female productivity - recruits per spawner), number and size of female spawners present, marine growth, and water temperature. Tukey multiple comparison tests and stacked bar plots were used to check for correlations between freshwater growth and the age at which females mature and between freshwater growth and early maturation. I found no direct correlation between freshwater growth and recruitment in either tributary. However, freshwater growth appears to be decreasing as time progresses. These results suggest that, while important, freshwater growth is not the factor directly limiting recruitment in either of these tributaries.

Book excerpt: Chinook salmon migrate seaward either during their first spring and summer (ocean-type) or after one or two years in freshwater (stream-type). The tendency to remain a year or longer in freshwater is determined by the harshness of the rearing environment. Salmonids reared in severe environments with short growing seasons may not develop an annulus on their scale at the end of the first growing season. This paper compares circulus counts and size among 15 upper Yukon River tributary populations of juvenile chinook salmon collected in late August 1987 and between May 26 and August 20 in 1988 and examines the timing of freshwater annulus formation.

Book excerpt: Abundance of adult Chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha passing by the village of Russian Mission was estimated in 2003 as part of a radio telemetry study on the Yukon River. Drift gillnets were used to capture 2,312 salmon at Russian Mission, 1,097 of which were marked with plastic spaghetti tags and esophageal radio transmitters. Marked fish were tracked upstream to spawning grounds. Chapman's modification of Petersen's closed-population, two-event mark-recapture experiment was used to estimate abundance. The second sampling event consisted of salmon spawning in select locations or caught in select fisheries representing populations that returned early (bound for Canada), late (bound for the Koyukuk River), and mid-run (bound for the Tanana River). Of the 36,032 large salmon (= 650 mm METF) involved in the second event, 146 carried transmitters for an estimated abundance of 261,545 chinook salmon. Diagnostic testing showed this estimate to be consistent. Bootstrap simulation was used to estimate the variance (SE=18,911).

Book excerpt: This report describes a modeling framework to reconstruct the historical time series of drainagewide and stock-specific run and escapement of Pacific salmon Oncorhynchus spp. that return to a single large river system. The model combines historical data from various assessment projects that estimate mainstem passage, harvests, tributary escapements, and stock proportions under a single maximum-likelihood estimation framework. As a demonstration, the modeling framework was applied to reconstruct the historical (1981–2019) drainagewide run size and escapement of Yukon River Chinook salmon (O. tshawytscha) and each of the contributing stock components: Canada, Middle Yukon, and Lower Yukon. The model estimated that the average drainagewide (all stocks) run size was 301,000 (range: 109,000–491,000), escapement was 186,000 (88,000–305,000), and harvest rate was 35% (2–60%). The average Canada stock run size was 125,000 (39,000–214,000), escapement was 60,000 (14,000–126,000), and harvest rate was 48% (2–78%). The average Middle Yukon stock run size was 75,000 (22,000–139,000), escapement was 47,000 (14,000–126,000), and harvest rate was 35% (2–85%). The average Lower Yukon stock run was 101,000 (48,000–204,000), escapement was 78,000 (30,000–164,000), and harvest rate was 21% (1–51%). The next steps regarding the application of this model to Yukon River Chinook salmon should include a comprehensive data review, consideration of alternative model structures, and critical evaluation of model assumptions.

This book was released on 2018 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study estimated age and sex composition of Canadian-origin Yukon River Chinook salmon at the United States (U.S.)-Canada border from 1982 to 2006. In 2012, the Joint Technical Committee of the Yukon River Panel (JTC) adopted a change to the assessment methods used to estimate U.S.-Canada border passage of Canadian-origin Chinook salmon from a fish wheel mark-recapture operated by Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) to a sonar with a gillnet test fishery at Eagle operated jointly by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) and DFO since 2005. Because the 2 fish capturing methodologies (fish wheel versus gillnet) resulted in different age-sex compositions, it was necessary to adjust the age-sex composition assessed by the fish wheel to those of the gillnet test fishery. Age, sex, and length (ASL) data were collected from fish sampled using both methods from 2005 to 2012, except 2009. Using 2007, 2008, 2010-2012 data, fish wheel age-sex compositions were adjusted using 2 methods: (1) age-sex selectivity and (2) length selectivity, and compared to the age-sex compositions observed in the gillnet test fishery. Although both methods performed similarly, the age-sex selectivity method was slightly better than the length selectivity method to adjust age-sex composition. However, because of uncertainties about the 2007-2012 data representing historical fish wheel data, the length selectivity method was chosen to adjust the 1982-2006 age-sex composition. Length selectivity converted 1982-2006 age-sex proportion are presented, and the uncertainties and limitations are discussed.
