Book Synopsis Socialist Unemployment by : Susan L. Woodward
Download or read book Socialist Unemployment written by Susan L. Woodward and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 1995-08-13 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first political analysis of unemployment in a socialist country, Susan Woodward argues that the bloody conflicts that are destroying Yugoslavia stem not so much from ancient ethnic hatreds as from the political and social divisions created by a failed socialist program to prevent capitalist joblessness. Under Communism the concept of socialist unemployment was considered an oxymoron; when it appeared in postwar Yugoslavia, it was dismissed as illusory or as a transitory consequence of Yugoslavia's unorthodox experiments with worker-managed firms. In Woodward's view, however, it was only a matter of time before countries in the former Soviet bloc caught up with Yugoslavia, confronting the same unintended consequences of economic reforms required to bring socialist states into the world economy. By 1985, Yugoslavia's unemployment rate had risen to 15 percent. How was it that a labor-oriented government managed to tolerate so clear a violation of the socialist commitment to full employment? Proposing a politically based model to explain this paradox, Woodward analyzes the ideology of economic growth, and shows that international constraints, rather than organized political pressures, defined government policy. She argues that unemployment became politically "invisible," owing to its redefinition in terms of guaranteed subsistence and political exclusion, with the result that it corrupted and ultimately dissolved the authority of all political institutions. Forced to balance domestic policies aimed at sustaining minimum standards of living and achieving productivity growth against the conflicting demands of the world economy and national security, the leadership inadvertently recreated the social relations of agrarian communities within a postindustrial society.

Book Synopsis Europe from the Balkans to the Urals by : Renéo Lukic
Download or read book Europe from the Balkans to the Urals written by Renéo Lukic and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The disintegration of Yugoslavia and the Soviet Union in 1991 shed entirely new light on the character of their political systems. There is now a need to re-examine many of the standard interpretations of Soviet and Yugoslav politics. This book is a comparative study of the disintegration of Yugoslavia and the Soviet Union - as multinational, federal communist states - and the reaction of European and US foreign policy to the parallel collapses of these nations. The authors describe the structural similarities in the destabilization of the two countries, providing great insight into the demise of both.

Book Synopsis Yugoslav Workers’ Selfmanagement by : M.J. Broekmeyer
Download or read book Yugoslav Workers’ Selfmanagement written by M.J. Broekmeyer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the Proceedings of a Conference held on 7-9 January 1970 in Amsterdam on the problems and perspectives of Yugoslav workers' self management. The Yugoslav writers were selected according to the criteria that they are competent in their field and that they have different viewpoints in their assessment of the system. We hope that the threefold purpose of this book will be attained, namely to provide a clearer insight for the Western reader into the Yugoslav system; secondly to confront Yugoslav society with the ques tions asked and the criticism voiced here with regard to the practice of workers' selfmanagement; and, lastly, to pay a modest tribute to the 20th anniversary of Yugoslav workers' self management. To be sure, the range of subjects treated in Amsterdam might seem to be rather wide, but one should bear in mind thaI this was unavoidable in the first large-scale confrontation of two different social systems outside Yugoslavia. Although the language used in this book may not always correspond with the official standards, we trust that the published texts will be easily readable for the benevolent reader.

Book Synopsis The Political Economy of Hungary by : Adam Fabry
Download or read book The Political Economy of Hungary written by Adam Fabry and published by Palgrave Pivot. This book was released on 2019-04-13 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the political economy of Hungary from the mid-1970s to the present. Widely considered a ‘poster boy’ of neoliberal transformation in post-communist Eastern Europe until the mid-2000s, Hungary has in recent years developed into a model ‘illiberal’ regime. Constitutional checks-and-balances are non-functioning; the independent media, trade unions, and civil society groups are constantly attacked by the authorities; there is widespread intolerance against minorities and refugees; and the governing FIDESZ party, led by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, controls all public institutions and increasingly large parts of the country’s economy. To make sense of the politico-economical roller coaster that Hungary has experienced in the last four decades, Fabry employs a Marxian political economy approach, emphasising competitive accumulation, class struggle (both between capital and labour, as well as different ‘fractions of capital’), and uneven and combined development. The author analyses the neoliberal transformation of the Hungarian political economy and argues that the drift to authoritarianism under the Orbán regime cannot be explained as a case of Hungarian exceptionalism, but rather represents an outcome of the inherent contradictions of the variety of neoliberalism that emerged in Hungary after 1989.

Book Synopsis Making and Breaking the Yugoslav Working Class by : Goran Musić
Download or read book Making and Breaking the Yugoslav Working Class written by Goran Musić and published by Central European University Press. This book was released on 2021-03-30 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Workers' self-management was one of the unique features of communist Yugoslavia. Goran Musić has investigated the changing ways in which blue-collar workers perceived the recurring crises of the regime. Two self-managed metal enterprises, one in Serbia another in Slovenia, provide the frame of the analysis in the time span between 1945 and 1989. These two factories became famous for strikes in 1988 that evoked echoes in popular discourses in former Yugoslavia. Drawing on interviews, factory publications and other media, local archives, and secondary literature, Musić analyzes the two cases, going beyond the clichés of political manipulation from the top and workers' intrinsic attraction to nationalism. The author explains how, in the later phase of communist Yugoslavia, growing social inequalities among the workers and undemocratic practices inside the self-managed enterprises facilitated the spread of a nationalist and pro-market ideology on the shop floors. Restoring the voice of the working class in history, Musić presents Yugoslavia's workers actors in their own right, rather than as a mass easily manipulated by nationalist or populist politicians. The book thus seeks to open a debate on the social processes leading up to the dissolution of Yugoslavia.

Book Synopsis Investment and Property Rights in Yugoslavia by : Milica Uvalic
Download or read book Investment and Property Rights in Yugoslavia written by Milica Uvalic and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-11-05 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Milica Uvalic examines the theoretical and empirical issues related to investment in Yugoslavia since 1965. She explores investment policies, sources of finance, macroeconomic performance, enterprise incentives and current property reforms in relation to Western theory on investment behavior in the labor-managed firm and Kornai's theory on socialist economies. In line with Kornai's theory, the author argues that the fundamental causes of problems in Yugoslavia are generic to socialist economic systems, rather than the specific characteristic of self-management.
