Book Synopsis Youth Movements, Citizenship and the English Countryside by : Sian Edwards
Download or read book Youth Movements, Citizenship and the English Countryside written by Sian Edwards and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-28 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the significance and meaning of the countryside within mid-twentieth century youth movements. It examines the ways in which the Boy Scouts, Girl Guides, Woodcraft Folk and Young Farmers’ Club organisations employed the countryside as a space within which ‘good citizenship’ – in leisure, work, the home and the community – could be developed. Mid-century youth movements identified the ‘problem’ of modern youth as a predominantly urban and working class issue. They held that the countryside offered an effective antidote to these problems: being a ‘good citizen’ within this context necessitated a respectful and mutually beneficial relationship with the rural sphere. Avenues to good citizenship could be found through an enthusiasm for outdoor recreation, the stewardship of the countryside and work on the land. However, models of good citizenship were intrinsically gendered.

Book Synopsis Working with Unattached Youth by : George W. Goetschius
Download or read book Working with Unattached Youth written by George W. Goetschius and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-19 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1998. This is Volume XI of the twelve in the Sociology of Youth and Adolescence series which outlines the problem, approach, and method around a the report of an enquiry into the ways and means of contacting and working with unattached young people in an inner London Borough. The importance of this book, is in the definition of unattachment, and in the perhaps unexpectedly wide range of implications for youth work and the Youth Service that might follow from it. Un attachment is defined as a conflict in expectations between those who offer the service (clubs, youth centres and others in the Youth Service) and those-the young people-who want and need it but who are unable or unwilling to accept it on the conditions on which it is offered. In describing the work that gave rise to this definition, the authors help us to see that the conflict in expectations has its roots in a much wider context than we had been able to see before.

Book Synopsis Adult Responses to Popular Music and Intergenerational Relations in Britain, c. 19551975 by : Gillian A. M. Mitchell
Download or read book Adult Responses to Popular Music and Intergenerational Relations in Britain, c. 19551975 written by Gillian A. M. Mitchell and published by Anthem Press. This book was released on 2019-02-28 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘Adult Reactions to Popular Music and Inter-generational Relations in Britain, 1955–1975’ challenges stereotypes concerning a post-war ‘generation gap’, exacerbated by rebellion-inducing popular music styles, by demonstrating the considerable variety which frequently characterized adult responses to the music, whilst also highlighting that the impact of the music on inter-generational relations was more complex than is often assumed. [NP] Utilizing extensive primary evidence, from first-person accounts to newspapers, television programmes, surveys and archive collections, the book adopts a thematic approach, identifying three key arenas of British society in which adult responses to popular music, and the impact of such reactions upon relations between generations, seem particularly revealing and significant. The book examines in detail the place of popular music within family life and Christian churches and their engagement with popular music, particularly within youth clubs. It also explores ‘encounters’ between the worlds of traditional Variety entertainment and popular music while providing broader perspectives on this most dynamic and turbulent of periods.
Book Synopsis Networks of Empire by : Giles Scott-Smith
Download or read book Networks of Empire written by Giles Scott-Smith and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2008 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exchange programmes have been a part of US foreign relations since the nineteenth century, but it was only during and after World War II that they were applied by the US government on a large scale to influence foreign publics in support of strategic objectives. This book looks at the background, organisation, and goals of the Department of State's most prestigious activity in this field, the Foreign Leader Program. The Program (still running as the International Visitor Leadership Program) enabled US Embassies to select and invite talented, influential 'opinion leaders' to visit the United States, meet their professional counterparts, and gain a broad understanding of American attitudes and opinions from around the country. By tracking the operation of the Program in three key transatlantic allies of the United States a full picture is given of who was selected and why, and how the target groups changed over time in line with a developing US-European relationship. The book therefore takes a unique in-depth look at the importance of exchanges for the extension of US 'informal empire' and the maintenance of the transatlantic alliance during the Cold War.
