Book excerpt: For as long as the idea of "miracles" has been in the public sphere, the conversation about them has been shaped exclusively by religious apologists and Christian leaders. The definitions for what a miracles are have been forged by the same men who fought hard to promote their own beliefs as fitting under that umbrella. It's time for a change. Enter John W. Loftus, an atheist author who has earned three master's degrees from Lincoln Christian Seminary and Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. Loftus, a former student of noted Christian apologist William Lane Craig, got some of the biggest names in the field to contribute to this book, which represents a critical analysis of the very idea of miracles. Incorporating his own thoughts along with those of noted academics, philosophers, and theologians, Loftus is able to properly define "miracle" and then show why there's no reason to believe such a thing even exists. Addressing every single issue that touches on miracles in a thorough and academic manner, this compilation represents the most extensive look at the phenomenon ever displayed through the lens of an ardent nonbeliever. If you've ever wondered exactly what a miracle is, or doubted whether they exist, then this book is for you.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heartwarming and Heart-Opening Stories Gathered from Decades of Medical Practice Bernie Siegel first wrote about miracles when he was a practicing surgeon and founded Exceptional Cancer Patients, a groundbreaking synthesis of group, individual, dream, and art therapy that provided patients with a “carefrontation.” Compiled during his more than thirty years of practice, speaking, and teaching, the stories in these pages are riveting, warm, and belief expanding. Their subjects include a girl whose baby brother helped her overcome anorexia, a woman whose cancer helped her heal by teaching her to stand up for herself, and a family that was saved from a burning house by bats. Without diminishing the reality of pain and hardship, the stories show real people turning crisis into blessing by responding to adversity in ways that empower and heal. They demonstrate what we are capable of and show us that we can achieve miracles as we confront life’s difficulties.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The words you speak and proclaim by faith are spirit and life. Inside of you are seeds of greatness and your thoughts must be must be right. If you can speak it by faith, see it; feel it and you will have it. By your words you are justify or condemn. Your words are vital important. God's word carries His power and life. You are so important and precious that God the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit created you and He want to lavish His love on you. When God creates, He creates with precision and purpose. He created lights for a purpose and darkness for another purpose and created man (you) for a purpose. That purpose is for fellowship, to rule over, to reign over, to be responsible, to be master of all, and complete authority over, power over, dominion over the earth. Gen 1:26-28 " 26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. 27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. 28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth". (KJV) The starting point of fulfilling God's purpose for anyone therefore, is to be productive. God's highest purpose for you is revealed in this passage as being "to show forth or proclaim the praises of God who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light". To show is to demonstrate or display or express as God's own special people, the praises of God. Your purpose is to declare to people. Announce it to the world the praises of Him. We are therefore primarily made as agents of worship to glorify God our maker. May you live up to God's expectations of His glory being made manifest in every area of your life, in Jesus Name. The Bible says in Eph 1:5 & 11 "we are predestined according to the purpose of Him who works all things after the counsel of his own will". This means that no one can determine his purpose in life by himself because it has been predetermined before the creation of the world and therefore not open to choice. The purpose of every human being in this world is to glorify God. Faith sees beyond the moment. Faith sees beyond the problem. Faith is not bound to the present but crates room for the future to be realized. Faith focuses on the glorious outcome on the other side of a calamity. Do you think you have missed it beyond repairs? Have faith in God. Do you think that opportunity will never come again? Have faith in God. 1 John 5:4-5 "Every child of God can defeat the world, and our faith is what gives us this victory". (CEV)

When Danielle Steel was a young girl, her grandmother gave her a beautiful antique book with blank pages inside. She wasn’t quite sure what to do with it. Draw? Write? Soon, she began to discover quotes she liked—words from other people that she wanted to keep and hold on to. She started to write them down on those smooth ivory pages. That habit of gathering sayings has stayed with Danielle throughout the years. And now, after a lifetime of collecting, she shares the quotations that have meant the most to her—lines from books and magazines, pieces of poetry, short passages from the Bible, and quotes gathered from the world around her. These are the words that bring her wisdom and humor, inspiration and comfort, and, above all, joy. May Expect a Miracle bring the same to you, too.

Book excerpt: At some time in our lives, most of us have prayed for or hoped for a miracle—an event that seems impossible but is brought about by God's transcendent power. But when miracles occur, did you know that you have a role to play? If that's true, what's the catch? What do we have to do? What's it going to cost us? Popular author and pastor Mike Slaughter examines the two components of every miracle: divine action and human responsibility. For a real miracle to take place, we must act with God, using whatever gifts, talents, and abilities we have and directing them toward God’s work. We need to follow the examples of Mary in the birth of Jesus, Jesus’ followers when he healed them, and Jesus’ disciples after he rose from the dead. This Lent, use your God-given gifts and talents for God’s glory, and get ready to be made for a miracle. Additional components for this six-week study include a comprehensive Leader Guide and a DVD featuring author and pastor Mike Slaughter.

Book excerpt: His New York Times phenomenon The Prayer of Jabez changed how millions pray. Now Bruce Wilkinson wants to change what they do next. Anyone can do a good deed, but some good works can only happen by an act of God. Around the world these acts are called miracles–not that even religious people expect to see one any time soon. But what would happen if millions of ordinary people walked out each morning expecting God to deliver a miracle through them to a person in need? You Were Born for This starts with the dramatic premise that everyone at all times is in need of a miracle, and that God is ready to meet those needs supernaturally through ordinary people who are willing to learn the "protocol of heaven." In the straightforward, story-driven, highly motivating style for which he is known, Wilkinson describes how anyone can be a 'Delivery Guy' from heaven in such universally significant arenas of life as finances, practical help, relationships, purpose and spiritual growth. You Were Born for This will change how you see your world and show you what you can expect God to do through you to meet real needs. You will master seven simple tools of service, and come to say with confidence, "I want to deliver a supernatural gift from God to someone in need today–and I expect to!"

Book excerpt: All day everyday, you are being influenced and even controlled by words in both your inner (mental) and outer (physical) worlds. For most people it tends to be a mindless mechanical way of living life because they blindly follow along with whatever prerecorded instructions (whether good or bad) that are engrained in their minds. They react to life as opposed to being in control of life; they therefore fear life. By practicing the techniques (of wordology) as prescribed in this book, you can not only regain conscious control of your life, but you can even control other people and circumstances with nothing more than the proper usage of words: thus the "miracle working power of wordology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joel Osteen, the smiling preacher, has quickly emerged as one of the most recognizable Protestant leaders in the country. His megachurch, the Houston based Lakewood Church, hosts an average of over 40,000 worshipers each week. Osteen is the best-selling author of numerous books, and his sermons and inspirational talks appear regularly on mainstream cable and satellite radio. How did Joel Osteen become Joel Osteen? How did Lakewood become the largest megachurch in the U. S.? Salvation with a Smile, the first book devoted to Lakewood Church and Joel Osteen, offers a critical history of the congregation by linking its origins to post-World War II neopentecostalism, and connecting it to the exceptionally popular prosperity gospel movement and the enduring attraction of televangelism. In this richly documented book, historian Phillip Luke Sinitiere carefully excavates the life and times of Lakewood’s founder, John Osteen, to explain how his son Joel expanded his legacy and fashioned the congregation into America’s largest megachurch. As a popular preacher, Joel Osteen’s ministry has been a source of existential strength for many, but also the routine target of religious critics who vociferously contend that his teachings are theologically suspect and spiritually shallow. Sinitiere’s keen analysis shows how Osteen’s rebuttals have expressed a piety of resistance that demonstrates evangelicalism’s fractured, but persistent presence. Salvation with a Smile situates Lakewood Church in the context of American religious history and illuminates how Osteen has parlayed an understanding of American religious and political culture into vast popularity and success.

Book excerpt: We all pray . . . some. We pray to stay sober, centered, or solvent. When the lump is deemed malignant. When the money runs out before the month does. When the marriage is falling apart. We pray. But wouldn't we like to pray more? Better? Stronger? With more fire, faith, and fervency? Yet we have kids to feed, bills to pay, deadlines to meet. The calendar pounces on our good intentions like a tiger on a rabbit. And what about our checkered history with prayer? Uncertain words. Unmet expectations. Unanswered requests. We aren't the first to struggle with prayer. The first followers of Jesus needed prayer guidance too. In fact, prayer is the only tutorial they ever requested. And Jesus gave them a prayer. Not a lecture on prayer. Not the doctrine of prayer. He gave them a quotable, repeatable, portable prayer. Couldn't we use the same? In Before Amen best-selling author Max Lucado joins readers on a journey to the very heart of biblical prayer, offering hope for doubts and confidence even for prayer wimps. Distilling prayers in the Bible down to one pocket-sized prayer, Max reminds readers that prayer is not a privilege for the pious nor the art of a chosen few. Prayer is simply a heartfelt conversation between God and his child. Let the conversation begin.
