Book Synopsis Forest Plans of North America by : Jacek P. Siry
Download or read book Forest Plans of North America written by Jacek P. Siry and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2015-03-13 with total page 483 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forest Plans of North America presents case studies of contemporary forest management plans developed for forests owned by federal, state, county, and municipal governments, communities, families, individuals, industry, investment organizations, conservation organizations, and others in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The book provides excellent real-life examples of contemporary forest planning processes, the various methods used, and the diversity of objectives and constraints faced by forest owners. Chapters are written by those who have developed the plans, with each contribution following a unified format and allowing a common, clear presentation of the material, along with consistent treatment of various aspects of the plans. This work complements other books published by members of the same editorial team (Forest Management and Planning, Introduction to Forestry and Natural Resource Management), which describe the planning process and the various methods one might use to develop a plan, but in general do not, as this work does, illustrate what has specifically been developed by landowners and land managers. This is an in-depth compilation of case studies on the development of forest management plans by the different landowner groups in North America. The book offers students, practitioners, policy makers, and the general public an opportunity to greatly improve their appreciation of forest management and, more importantly, foster an understanding of why our forests today are what they are and what forces and tools may shape their tomorrow. Forest Plans of North America provides a solid supplement to those texts that are used as learning tools for forest management courses. In addition, the work functions as a reference for the types of processes used and issues addressed in the early 21st century for managing land resources. - Presents 40-50 case studies of forest plans developed for a wide variety of organizations, groups, and landowners in North America - Illustrates plans that have specifically been developed by landowners and land managers - Features engaging, clearly written content that is accessible rather than highly technical, while demonstrating the issues and methods involved in the development of the plans - Each chapter contains color photographs, maps, and figures

Book excerpt: "The fourth edition of Forest Management - revised significantly from previous, successful editions - offers authoritative, up-to-date coverage of broad-scope concepts and ideas for those entering the fields of forest management, forest economics, and forest ecology. Viewed as large integrated ecosystems that are often owned and managed by multiple landowners, forests continue to be at the center of debates involving global warming and the sustaining of human populations. Because long-term ecological outcomes of forest management activities continue to be of heightened concern to citizens, interest groups, and regulators, the comprehensive fourth edition recognizes the scope of ecological, economic, and social outcomes from the management and use of forest lands. It provides future decision makers and stakeholders with contemporary methods to make quantitative estimates of the consequences of implementing alternative management or policy scenarios for forests."--pub. desc.
Book Synopsis Planning for Forest Stewardship by : D. Ramsey Russell
Download or read book Planning for Forest Stewardship written by D. Ramsey Russell and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1991, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service Forest Stewardship Program has assisted over 200,000 landowners in preparing multipurpose management plans for areas encompassing more than 20 million acres of nonindustrial private forest (NIPF). These plans promote the long-term sustainability of private forests by balancing future public needs for forest products with the need for protecting and enhancing watershed productivity, air and water quality, fish and wildlife habitat, and threatened and endangered species. This guide offers assistance to writers of the plans and includes instructions, requirements, excerpts from well-written plans, and specific recommendations for developing a plan. Plan writers vary among States and include State foresters, private consultants, and, through a coached planning process, landowners themselves. Not all subjects discussed will apply to every property or forest stewardship plan. A major principle for organizing a plan is that each State must retain the greatest amount of discretion in identifying the needs of NIPF landowners in its region, developing plans that reflect those needs, and putting to use those practices that best achieve their resource objectives. As the writer of a plan, you must be flexible in your thinking, allow for future changes, and incorporate, as it becomes available, new knowledge about dynamic ecosystems.

Book Synopsis Quantitative Techniques in Participatory Forest Management by : Eugenio Martinez-Falero
Download or read book Quantitative Techniques in Participatory Forest Management written by Eugenio Martinez-Falero and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2016-04-19 with total page 627 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forest management has evolved from a mercantilist view to a multi-functional one that integrates economic, social, and ecological aspects. However, the issue of sustainability is not yet resolved. Quantitative Techniques in Participatory Forest Management brings together global research in three areas of application: inventory of the forest variables that determine the main environmental indices, description and design of new environmental indices, and the application of sustainability indices for regional implementations. All these quantitative techniques create the basis for the development of scientific methodologies of participatory sustainable forest management.

Book Synopsis A guide to multiple-use forest management planning for small and medium forest enterprises by : Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
Download or read book A guide to multiple-use forest management planning for small and medium forest enterprises written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2023-11-07 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication discusses the concept, evolution, and requirements of forest management planning, focusing on multiple-use forest management and small and medium forest enterprises (SMFEs). Forest management planning is a document that translates forest policies into a coordinated programme for managing forests over a set period of time, integrating environmental, economic, and social dimensions. It serves various purposes, such as legal documents, concession agreements, and tools for sustainable forest management. Multiple-use forest management recognizes the diverse values and benefits that forests provide beyond timber, such as water regulation, climate change mitigation, biodiversity conservation, and cultural values. Despite its challenges, forest management planning can contribute to sustainability and optimize the value derived from forests. SMFEs play a crucial role in supporting livelihoods and forest-based economies. However, barriers such as policy environments, lack of support tools, and management challenges need to be addressed. Forest management planning can help overcome these barriers by ensuring legal compliance, mitigating risks, promoting sustainability, and supporting marketing and value chain development. It is also a valuable tool for empowering local forest users, involving stakeholders, and negotiating benefit-sharing arrangements. The process of forest management planning involves gathering information, defining objectives, developing silvicultural and ecosystem services plans, creating a business plan, planning for unusual events, and establishing a monitoring system. It is an adaptive learning process that continuously evaluates and adapts plans based on the results of forest management activities. Stakeholder engagement is key to developing a socially acceptable forest management plan, starting with identifying stakeholders, creating awareness, informed discussions, and monitoring to keep stakeholders accountable for their agreed responsibilities. Negotiating expectations and building consensus helps identify conflicts and integrate qualitative data to improve decision-making in multiple-use forest management. In conclusion, forest management planning is essential for sustainable forest management, contributing to the well-being of communities, the environment, and the economy. This guide provides a framework for forest management planning, guiding forest managers through the planning process stepwise and providing advice on information sources needed during the planning process. The framework can be adapted to national and local contexts in line with relevant regulatory requirements.
Book Synopsis Low Impact Forestry: Forestry as If the Future Mattered by : Mitch Lansky
Download or read book Low Impact Forestry: Forestry as If the Future Mattered written by Mitch Lansky and published by Maine Evironmental Policy Inst. This book was released on 2002 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Sustainable forestry is right where organic gardening was a generation ago--at the very beginning of working out the techniques and technologies that will let logging thrive at a scale appropriate to both the human and natural communities that depend on the forest. This book is at--if you will pardon the expression--the absolute cutting edge of that process." Bill McKibben, author ofThe End of Nature, Hope, Human and Wild, Enough, and other books If the future really mattered . . . How would forests be managed to improve, rather than degrade, future timber values? How would trees be cut to minimize damage to the residual forest? How would foresters measure success towards minimizing damage? How would loggers be paid to lower logging impacts? How would forests be managed in a way that ensures the survival of all native species? How would woodlot owners be able to afford this type of management? Low-Impact Forestry: Forestry as if the Future Matteredanswers these questions and more. Using Maine as a case study, this book offers forestry goals and guidelines that emphasize quality and value while conserving biodiversity and supporting communities for the long term.

Book Synopsis Ecological Forest Management by : Jerry F. Franklin
Download or read book Ecological Forest Management written by Jerry F. Franklin and published by Waveland Press. This book was released on 2018-03-19 with total page 688 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fundamental changes have occurred in all aspects of forestry over the last 50 years, including the underlying science, societal expectations of forests and their management, and the evolution of a globalized economy. This textbook is an effort to comprehensively integrate this new knowledge of forest ecosystems and human concerns and needs into a management philosophy that is applicable to the vast majority of global forest lands. Ecological forest management (EFM) is focused on policies and practices that maintain the integrity of forest ecosystems while achieving environmental, economic, and cultural goals of human societies. EFM uses natural ecological models as its basis contrasting it with modern production forestry, which is based on agronomic models and constrained by required return-on-investment. Sections of the book consider: 1) Basic concepts related to forest ecosystems and silviculture based on natural models; 2) Social and political foundations of forestry, including law, economics, and social acceptability; 3) Important current topics including wildfire, biological diversity, and climate change; and 4) Forest planning in an uncertain world from small privately-owned lands to large public ownerships. The book concludes with an overview of how EFM can contribute to resolving major 21st century issues in forestry, including sustaining forest dependent societies.
