Book excerpt: Robert Young's famous translation of the New Testament Gospels, in which each passage is written to reflect its exact and literal meaning, is presented here in this attractive edition. For his translation of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, Robert Young used two resources: The Textus Receptus (TR) are manuscripts in Greek whose origins date to antiquity. Collated and published by the Renaissance theologian Erasmus, these texts were used in translations by Christian luminaries such as William Tyndale, Robert Estienne and the scholars who composed the celebrated King James Bible. Prior to their arrangement by Erasmus, the Greek texts had been faithfully copied by monk scribes through the generations. Majority Text (MT) - or the Byzantine text - are the commonest form of text used for describing the character of the New Testament. This textual criticism was cross-referenced by Young, that he could present his own work in the most consistently literal manner possible.

Book excerpt: Robert Young's famous translation of the New Testament Gospels, in which each passage is written to reflect its exact and literal meaning, is presented here in this attractive edition. Majority Text (MT) - or the Byzantine text - are the commonest form of text used for describing the character of the New Testament. This textual criticism was cross-referenced by Young, that he could present his own work in the most consistently literal manner possible. Many of the analyses underpin the Greek Orthodox translations of the Gospels and New Testament, and date to the time of the Byzantine Empire. The four books of the Gospels are translated such as to reflect the meaning behind the original words. Many Greek and Hebrew terms which are oblique or mystifying are rendered in English, making Young's work an excellent supplement to Bible study. Given the structure of the languages Young studied, the sentences are not arranged as we would expect of English - however all make sense, and the narrative flow is uninterrupted. This premium edition of Young's translation has every single verse of the Gospels highlighted in bold, facilitating quick and easy referencing. Furthermore, the print is sized at 12, and the text is arranged in dual columns in the same manner as a Bible. Thus students of this excellent work may read and absorb the contents, arriving at an understanding of the cultural and linguistic history of the Holy Bible. Robert Young taught himself how to read and speak several languages, and through his lifetime published several books relevant to the Old and New Testaments. A Scotsman, he undertook years of study in Edinburgh, where he was able to access a wide variety of old texts in ancient scripts.

Book excerpt: This is the collection of books known as the New Testament from 'The Gospels' up to 'Revelations'. This text is taken from the 'Robert Young's Literal Translation' published in 1862. It aimed to be a literal translation and remove the added poetic license given to the King James edition, this translation was made using the original Hebrew and Greek translations. Young even uses the present tense were most English translations use the past, because this conforms to the original Hebrew text. This version is printed with students of the text in mind, printed in a large A4 format and each verse and chapter is placed at the start of a new line for easy reference

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This spiritual classic by J. W. McGarvey and Philip Y. Pendleton arranges the gospel in chronological order, creating a flow and harmony perfect for New Testament study. This thorough commentary is arranged to account for the life of Jesus Christ: we begin with his years prior to entering the ministry, continue through his time spent with John the Baptist and preaching for three passovers, and concluding with Christ's death and resurrection. The major sermons and events depicted in the Gospels receive subtitles, that the reader may follow the narrative progress and easily reference the corresponding scripture. Being as this is a classic narrative, the authors use the King James Version of the Bible. In each part, the four books of the Gospels - Matthew, Mark, Luke and John - are referenced according to the letters A, B, C and D. Variations upon the readings are contained within braces - { } - that readers may gain great insight both into the story of Christ and the context of the Biblical era.

Book excerpt: What is the Bible? How did it get to us? Why are translations so different? And what influence has the Bible had on culture? From its very first pages, The Bible: An Introduction, Third Edition, offers clear answers to the most basic questions that first-time students and curious inquirers bring to the Bible. Without presuming either prior knowledge of the Bible or a particular attitude toward it, Jerry L. Sumney uses straightforward language to lead the reader on an exploration of the Bible's contents and the history of its writings, showing how critical methods help readers understand what they find in the Bible. Filled with maps, charts, illustrations, and color photographs to enhance the student's experience with the text. This third edition offers a number of revisions and a new section on the deuterocanonical books. Neither polemical nor apologetic, The Bible presents the biblical writings as the efforts of men and women in the past to understand their lives and their world in light of the ways they understood the divine.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Four Gospels: A New Translation Jesus and his disciples spoke and wrote Aramaic. His reported words and discourses, and the earliest accounts of his deeds, were written down and circulated in that language, as no one doubts. Documents of this sort were numerous (Luke 1:1), and they attest literary skill of a high order; thus notably the rather extensive source, "Q," used by Matthew and Luke. In what way these primitive records were related to our Four Gospels, is a question which hitherto has not received any satisfactory answer. It is purposed here to show that the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and John were composed in Aramaic on the basis of popular documents widespread in Palestine, and that they were by others translated into Greek without intended change. Also, that Luke employed only Semitic sources, assembling them into an especially complete Gospel, which he himself translated. The evidence of translation, in each and all of the Four Gospels, is perfectly clear and very complete. The attempt is here made to give an English rendering which takes constant account of the original Semitic text, everywhere closely reproduced in the Greek.
