Book excerpt: A comforting and uplifting picture book from bestselling poet and activist Cleo Wade. Which way do I go? That is your choice to make, said the Road. But what if I go the wrong way? The Road curved a little, almost as if it was giving me a hug, and said, Do not worry. Sometimes we go the wrong way on our way to the right way. It's okay to be afraid or to sometimes wander down the wrong path. Beloved poet Cleo Wade's What the Road Said features illustrations by Lucie de Moyencourt and encourages us to lead with kindness and curiosity, remembering that the most important thing we can do in life is to keep going.

Book excerpt: At that point clots bulging in my left ventricle raced toward my brain, and the more anxious I became as my heart rate climbed, the more each beat cleared the clots from my arm. That's when my world darkened and my mind escaped my body. I saw my physical being from a few feet above, standing with a friend. "I'm right here," I thought in awe, "but I'm also right over there." I was staring at the shell of myself, but I couldn't approach it. I had no physical feeling, as you would with a body. "This is it," I thought, strangely growing peaceful among the chaos that moments earlier had racked my brain. "I no longer have to wonder how I'll die." I fully knew I was dying and I wasn't shocked. A clear understanding that I teetered between life and death enveloped me. From behind, a warm blanket of serenity overwhelmed my senses, and a powerful feeling to fall back and surrender to the tranquility engulfed me. "It's OK, it's beautiful," the serenity beckoned. "Just lay down." But an overwhelming urge knowing with all of my heart that God needed me on earth for a rebirth and a life of His service kept me from that final, peaceful surrender. I rushed back to my body, where noise and babbling suddenly drowned the perfect peace of moments earlier. Like many scientists before this life-changing stroke, to be certain of something I needed hard data. Evidence. Proof. Something I could measure. Heaven can be an abstract concept, for sure. Before the stroke I wanted to touch Heaven, feel it for proof of its existence. In a sense, I got what I asked for. Ted Odom

On New Year’s Eve seventeen-year-old Amira texts the Irish ex-boyfriend she’s been missing desperately since they broke up at the end of summer, when she returned to Canada. They agreed they wouldn’t be friends, that it would never be enough. But that was then—back when Amira’s separated parents had shipped her off to relatives in Dublin for the summer so they could test-drive the idea of getting back together on a long haul cruise. Back when Amira was torn away from a friend in need in Toronto only to fall in love with a Dublin screenwriting class and take a step closer to her dream career. And only to fall for cousin Zoey’s bandmate, Darragh, the guy who is first her friend, then her enemy and later something much more complicated—the guy she can say anything to, the guy who makes every inch of her feel wide awake in a way she hadn’t known was possible. The guy she confides in about the dead sister she has no living memories of but who has remained with Amira nonetheless. The guy she might never see again. Or is there, despite the distance, somehow still a chance for them? Chock-full of movie references and giddy love for Dublin, Ireland, Just Like You Said It Would Be is a frank exploration of the extraordinary highs and shattering lows of first love that will appeal to fans of Jennifer Echols, Tara Kelly, Sarra Manning, Trish Doller, and Kirsty Eagar.

Book excerpt: Get an inside look at the detailed investigations of the United States Congress, the groundwork for Donald Trump’s win in 2016, and the events that occurred during his successful four years as president. When I woke up on October 2, 2020, I figured it would be like most Fridays in DC. Congress would finish up the week with a few votes on the House Floor and then members would rush to Reagan National Airport to catch a flight home. Polly and I had a mid-afternoon flight; however, we weren’t headed home. We were going to Wisconsin to help a colleague raise funds and to attend the President’s rally in Green Bay…. As I started to put on my workout gear before heading to the House gym, I took a look at my phone. I noticed I had several text messages and missed phone calls from Russell Dye, the top media staffer for our personal office and for Republicans on the House Judiciary Committee. Some of the calls and messages were from after midnight…. I called him right away. “What’s going on?” I asked. He responded, “Sir, the president has the virus!” I turned on the TV. It was the only story.… I had traveled to Cleveland with the president three days earlier—I knew I’d have to quarantine until I got tested. I’d been tested before the flight to Cleveland, but that wouldn’t matter now. I’d have to get a new test. No workout this morning, no flight to Wisconsin this afternoon…. First things first. I was scheduled for a Fox and Friends interview that morning in the eight o’clock hour. I grabbed a quick shower and then headed to the office to prep for the interview. We were supposed to discuss the election and how the president was doing in Ohio. But we knew the only topic would be the president contracting the virus…. An hour later I got tested in the House physician’s office.… On that drive home Polly and I talked about all that had transpired that morning. We talked about the president and first lady, and like millions of other Americans, we prayed for their health and for our country. Over the weekend I thought about that day—that one day—Friday, October 2, 2020: it was really a picture of the entire year. 2020 was about the virus and the presidential election. 2020 was all about politics.
