Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Very funny and frank' Independent 'Reads like Scrubs: The Blog ... funny and awful in equal measure' Observer * * * * * * * The bestselling real life story of a hapless junior doctor, based on his columns written anonymously for the Telegraph. IF YOU'RE GOING to be ill, it's best to avoid the first Wednesday in August. This is the day when junior doctors graduate to their first placements and begin to face having to put into practice what they have spent the last six years learning. Starting on the evening before he begins work as a doctor, this book charts Max Pemberton's touching and funny journey through his first year in the NHS. Progressing from youthful idealism to frank bewilderment, Max realises how little his job is about 'saving people' and how much of his time is taken up by signing forms and trying to figure out all the important things no one has explained yet -- for example, the crucial question of how to tell whether someone is dead or not. Along the way, Max and his fellow fledgling doctors grapple with the complicated questions of life, love, mental health and how on earth to make time to do your laundry. All Creatures Great and Small meets Bridget Jones's Diary, this is a humorous and accessible peek into a world which you'd normally need a medical degree to witness. If you enjoy Trust Me, I'm a (Junior) Doctor, don't miss the follow-up titles Where Does It Hurt? and The Doctor Will See You Now.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A lifelong pattern of use and abuse finally caught up with Dr. A. C. Gross when she was forty-three years old. She had been using drugs and alcohol to fix herself for as long as she could remember. Now, in You Can Trust MeIm a Doctor, Gross shares the story of her addiction and her journey to recovery. In this memoir, she describes growing up in a respectable, middle-class, Californian household where she was introduced to alcohol at a young age. She had her first taste of alcohol at age nine and first experienced being drunk at age fourteen. During her twenties, Gross tells how she continued to drink and experiment with drugs despite her rigorous studies. With her compulsive personality, excessive drinking and reckless use of pills became a constant part of everyday life. In 2004, with her physicians career in jeopardy and her family life unraveling, Gross was forced to seek help. Recovery was her next step, but it was not easy. She narrates how it took her nearly ten months to realize that recovery involved surrender of the old self to the will of God. You Can Trust MeIm a Doctor tells Grosss story of learning a new way of life.

Book excerpt: It is often interesting to know why an author chose to write a particular story. First, in order for me to explain this reason, I need to tell you a little about my background. I have worked as a teacher, then as a child psychologist in schools, and finally as a lecturer and professor of Educational Psychology in universities. It is only since my retirement some twelve years ago that I had the time to start writing stories for both young children and older adolescents. Because of my professional background - and particular interest in reading development - all my published short stories and novels have an underlying purpose. And that purpose is to bring to young people reading material that is not only interesting and that they can relate to their personal lives, but also carries with it something that could be useful in their psychological development. All of my three novels in this Xlibris Corporation series (see the relevant titles of the other two novels below) have an underlying developmental theme and purpose. And this is to provide stories that I hope may help young people deal with the painful feelings and practical difficulties that always have to be faced when someone has lost a loved one. Perhaps even more important, each of the stories also tells, in its own way, how the main character overcomes and rises above his or her grief and difficulties. In each case, this recovery comes not only from the help and support of one or more friends, relatives, neighbours and teachers but also, significantly, from the determination and courage of each of the main characters. In order to help you relate these important elements to your own life and perhaps to the lives of other young people whom you may know, I have added two short sections at the end of each book. The first provides you with a number of Questions to think about' and the second with a few carefully chosen Activities' for you to undertake. Even though it may take a little effort, please follow through on both of the above elements as they will most definitely help you get the most out of each story. Second, I believe that an author of any fictional story needs to be personally familiar with the place as well as the language* and culture of the people who live there. Without this element, the story will simply not feel authentic or real' to any reader wherever they happen to live in the world. My hope, again, is that this will be true for you. *In each of my three novels, I have a list at the end of the novel of the English translations, and a guide to the pronunciation of those important names, words and phrases in the indigenous languages that I have chosen to use in the respective novels. I think this may contribute to the authenticity of the stories as you read them. I hope so! The titles of my other two novels in this Xlibris Corporation series are: I am Thabeka and Woza Thabo!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of short stories and other miscellaneous writings by Joseph Heller, one of America’s most influential and idiosyncratic writers. Years before the publication of Catch-22—which was called “a monumental artifact of contemporary literature” by The New York Times, “an apocalyptic masterpiece” by the Chicago Sun-Times, and “one of the most bitterly funny works in the language” by The New Republic—Joseph Heller began sharpening his skills as a writer, searching for the voice that would best express his own peculiarly wry view of the world. In Catch As Catch Can, editors Matthew J. Bruccoli and Park Bucker have for the first time collected the short stories Heller published prior to that first novel, along with all the other short pieces of fiction and nonfiction that were published during his lifetime. Also included are five previously unpublished short stories, most reflecting the influence on Heller of urban naturalist writers such as Irwin Shaw and Nelson Algren. The result is an important and significant addition to our understanding and appreciation of Joseph Heller, showing his evolution as a writer and artist. For those unfamiliar with his work, it will serve as an excellent introduction; for everyone else, Catch As Catch Can is a chance to explore a new aspect of Heller's remarkable career.

From Seaman Recruit to Commander, Stephen Wendt took a different, distinctive, humorous path to success. From a non-qual on a submarine, to a Chief Staff Officer of a Submarine Squadron, to a contractor at Submarine Force Headquarters, Stephen was witness to, and part of, major social changes in the U.S. Navy. The Navy after the Vietnam War, Life on a Boomer in the 70s, the last days of The Admiral, Women on Ships, Dont Ask; Dont Tell, and Fraternization Policies were all part of his Navy experience. Ten Thousand and a Wake-up is a look at these changes through a slightly off-center lens.

Book excerpt: A little glue goes a long way. Or at least that’s what thirty-five-year-old single mother Lina Rivera hopes for when she finds herself smack dab in the middle of an undercover operation as a high school senior. Best-selling young adult crime novelist Lina Rivera is strikingly beautiful and can’t even purchase a scratch ticket without being carded. With her twins Luciana and Max beginning their freshman year of high school in the fall, she has never felt closer to understanding her target demographic: teenagers. But when the reviews of her newest release fall short and negative feedback taunts her from every angle, it becomes clear that teenage life in 2024 is nothing like her high school experience back in 1999—and people are starting to notice. Despite that, Lina is desperate to continue writing young adult books. So, when her ex-husband, Jon Cote, who is a private investigator, invites her to join an undercover operation at Emerson Academy, she can’t say no. She agrees to join “Operation Superglue” and is shocked beyond belief to discover that Jon has been posing as the school’s substitute art teacher for months and without any leads in a case of several missing teens. Now an undercover high school senior, Lina learns that today’s society is worlds away from anything remotely familiar. And, with her ex-husband back in her life in more ways than one, Lina soon realizes that the choices she made in the past may not be as permanently stuck as she had once assumed.

Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • The fate of the Chiss Ascendancy hangs in the balance in the epic finale of the Star Wars: Thrawn Ascendancy trilogy from Timothy Zahn. For thousands of years the Chiss Ascendancy has been an island of calm, a center of power, and a beacon of integrity. It is led by the Nine Ruling Families, whose leadership stands as a bulwark of stability against the Chaos of the Unknown Regions. But that stability has been eroded by a cunning foe who winnows away trust and loyalty in equal measure. Bonds of fidelity have given way to lines of division among the families. Despite the efforts of the Expansionary Defense Fleet, the Ascendancy slips closer and closer to civil war. The Chiss are no strangers to war. Their mythic status in the Chaos was earned through conflict and terrible deeds, some long buried. Until now. To ensure the Ascendancy’s future, Thrawn will delve deep into its past, uncovering the dark secrets surrounding the ascension of the First Ruling Family. But the truth of a family’s legacy is only as strong as the legend that supports it. Even if that legend turns out to be a lie. To secure the salvation of the Ascendancy, is Thrawn willing to sacrifice everything? Including the only home he has ever known?

Book excerpt: Yellow Orang-Utan Industries is the most successful of corporations ever, not that anyone can say specifically what it is they do. The founder and president of Yellow Orang-Utan Industries hides from the public, using a computer generated fake president to do most of the talking he'd ordinarily be doing himself. The fake president, Piano Smedley, is universally liked and attributed to the corporation's success. But when news breaks that a body answering Piano Smedley's description has been found, problems arise. The real president's personal assistant, Gertrude, finds herself grieving the fake president, even when she knows better. The task of programming the replacement fake president is based on data from departments who can't make up their mind and the real president becomes even less engaged with business than before. The executive board of directors make an appearance to take control, but by the time the new fake president appears, interest in Yellow Orang-Utan Industries is plummeting. Gertrude's made some new friends amongst the corporation though. One of them is Wellington, who interprets the stock market remarkably well and quite loyally thinks he can help the corporation. If any of them could get through to the real president. Except also, Wellington's remarkable skills and this earnest belief may be because Wellington's a prototype android, and nobody was supposed to find that out.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Expert Help for the Special Challenges of Managing Other Leaders Whether you were born a leader or have had leadership thrust upon you, you’re in for a whole new set of challenges when managing other leaders. Think of the qualities that have brought you to a leadership role: your vision, confidence, and charisma, or perhaps your experience, unique skills, expertise, or network of powerful allies. Now remind yourself that other leaders share some or all of these qualities with you. The leaders you are called upon to lead may be other executives, highly educated experts, investors, board members, government officials, doctors, lawyers, or other professionals. The potential contributions of these elites to any organization are vital, but the likelihood of friction is also high if you don’t manage relationships carefully. In any case, they are people with significant resources -- and strong opinions. How do you leverage the assets of the talented and powerful while making sure that egos remain unbruised? Leading Leaders breaks the challenge down into the Seven Daily Tasks of Leadership, and shows you how to carry out each task when you have to manage other leaders. The seven tasks and the special challenges they entail in leading leaders are: 1. Direction How do you negotiate a vision for the organization that other leaders will buy into? 2. Integration How do you make stars a team? 3. Mediation How do you resolve conflicts over turf and power among other leaders so the organization can move forward? 4. Education How do you educate people who think they are already educated? 5. Motivation How do you move other leaders who already seem “to have everything” to do the right thing for the organization? 6. Representation How do you lead your organization’s outside constituents while still leading leaders inside? 7. Trust Creation How do you gain and keep other leaders’ trust, the vital capital that your own leadership depends on? Drawing on the author’s own leadership experience as well as his research in the corporate, political, academic, and professional worlds, Leading Leaders answers these questions with a clear set of effective rules for all managers to follow in successfully leading other leaders.

I refer to these lessons as Deep Water because thats exactly how I felt; like I was in deep water just trying to survive. Many of those times were very painful, very anxious and very uncertain. These lessons come primarily from people whose paths I have had the privilege of crossing. Theyre not only my experiences but the experiences of others as well. I am in a constant pursuit of wisdom and character development and believe this pursuit lifelong. I believe I can always stand to grow wiser and my character be further developed. I believe this constant pursuit can only help me in my future endeavors and hopefully help you in yours.
