Book Synopsis Divining the Self by : Velma E. Love
Download or read book Divining the Self written by Velma E. Love and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Divining the Self weaves elements of personal narrative, myth, history, and interpretive analysis into a vibrant tapestry that reflects the textured, embodied, and performative nature of scripture and scripturalizing practices. Velma Love examines the Odu—the Yoruba sacred scriptures—along with the accompanying mythology, philosophy, and ritual technologies engaged by African Americans. Drawing from the personal narratives of African American Ifa practitioners along with additional ethnographic fieldwork conducted in Oyotunji African Village, South Carolina, and New York City, Love’s work explores the ways in which an ancient worldview survives in modern times. Divining the Self also takes up the challenge of determining what it means for the scholar of religion to study scripture as both text and performance. This work provides an excellent case study of the sociocultural phenomenon of scripturalizing practices.

Book Synopsis Preaching with Sacred Fire: An Anthology of African American Sermons, 1750 to the Present by : Martha Simmons
Download or read book Preaching with Sacred Fire: An Anthology of African American Sermons, 1750 to the Present written by Martha Simmons and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2010-08-16 with total page 989 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One hundred sermons that display the victorious, although sometimes painful, historical and spiritual pilgrimage of black people in America. A groundbreaking anthology, Preaching with Sacred Fire is a unique and powerful work. It captures the stunning diversity of the cultural and historical legacy of African American preaching more than three hundred years in the making. Each sermon, as editors Martha Simmons and Frank A. Thomas reveal, is a work of art and a lesson in unmatched rhetoric. The journey through this anthology—which includes selections from Jarena Lee, Frederick Douglass, Malcolm X, Martin Luther King Jr., Gardner C. Taylor, Vashti McKenzie, and many others—offers a rare view of the unheralded role of the African American preacher in American history. The collection provides new insights into the underpinnings of the black fight for emancipation and the rise and growth of the Civil Rights and Black Power movements. Sermons from the first decade of the twenty-first century point toward the future of African American preaching. Biographies of the preachers put their work in the cultural and homiletic context of their periods. The preachers of these sermons are men and women from a range of faiths, ancestries, and educational backgrounds. They draw on a vast and luminous landscape of poetic language, using metaphor, rhythm, and imagery to communicate with their congregations. What they all have in common is hope, resilience, and sacred fire. “Even during the most difficult and oppressive times,” Simmons and Thomas write in the preface, “the delivery, creativity, charisma, expressivity, fervor, forcefulness, passion, persuasiveness, poise, power, rhetoric, spirit, style, and vision of black preaching gave and gives hope to a community under siege.” This magnificent work beautifully renders the complexity, spiritual richness, and strength of African American life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Isaiah 66:15- ‘’For behold, the Lord will come with fire, and with His chariots like a whirlwind, to render His anger with fury, and His rebuke with flames of fire.’’ The term “fire of God” is often used symbolically in the Bible to portray the presence of God, the power of God, His judgment, His purifying work and, as His emblem of the anointing. Fire is a strange and fearful weapon. No power can come against the fire of God and not get roasted and burn to ashes. The dragon can survive anywhere but cannot survive in the fire. When your life carries the fire of God you will be too hot for the devil, to handle. If you notice backwardness, manipulation, prayerlessness, oppression in the dream, it is an indication of the fact that your fire has gone out. You need to come to the presence of God for fresh fire. The fire of God will help you preserves your life, career, business, and ministry. It will also consume your enemy.

Book Synopsis RELIGIOUS SYNCRETISM IN AFRICAN CHRISTIANITY by : ISAIAH OLUWAJEMIRIYE OLATOYAN
Download or read book RELIGIOUS SYNCRETISM IN AFRICAN CHRISTIANITY written by ISAIAH OLUWAJEMIRIYE OLATOYAN and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2024-04-18 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christianity among the African people, whether on the soil of Africa or in diaspora, is perceived and defined differently by different people. For instance, among African traditional religious people and Muslims, Christianity is a foreign religion that must not be allowed to thrive in Africa. To several Africans who profess Jesus, Christianity is good, but it is not adequate and effective enough to handle all human needs. Still, among some Western Christians and missionaries, African Christianity is superficial and lacks total commitment to Christ. Of course, the Africans are a cultural people with profound religious inclinations. Their traditional religion (ATR) has tremendously shaped their worldviews and socioeconomic and political activities. Consequently, when traditional Africans are converted to Christianity, they do not break ties with their traditional religions completely. The examination of relevant biblical texts on syncretism, however, reveals that God condemns the worship of many gods and places a curse on anyone who offers sacrifices to carved images and bows to them in worship. Therefore, this work investigates the root cause of religious syncretism among African people. In the attempt to find answers to why the average African Christian finds it difficult, if not impossible, to abandon his/her traditional religious belief systems completely to embrace Christianity, the author concludes that unless the issues surrounding the African forgotten and secret covenants are exposed and decisively addressed in the light of biblical teaching, syncretism will continue to be a stigma on the fabric of African Christianity. Therefore, to overcome the threats of syncretism in African Christianity, there is a need to establish a sound theological and missiological framework that can address the problems associated with the African worldviews and belief systems. This task must be carried out under the searchlight of Scriptures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nigeria predicted in the Bible is an inspirational book that unlocks the prophecies concerning Nigeria and some other nations, and institution. The emphasis dwells more on Nigeria and her citizen's biological ancestries. Historians recorded the ancient Ethiopia cover extensive part of West Africa and that excludes Proper Guinea. The prophecy says beyond the rivers of Ethiopia there is a nation whose land the rivers divide; this prophecy pointed to Proper Guinea which is beyond ancient Ethiopia territory where we found Nigeria, a nation with two great rivers from different location forming a confluence and creating the greatest delta in Africa. This is the Y symbol in Nigeria coat of arms which explains the emphasis of a nation whose land the rivers divide. Through the prophecies and historical records, we are been informed that Nigerians ancestors were true biblical Israelite s fugitives; that settled in present day Nigeria. Zephaniah 3 v 10; From beyond the rivers of Ethiopia my suppliants, even the daughter of my dispersed, shall bring mine offering. Isaiah 18 v 7b; a nation whose land the rivers or great channels divide-to the place [of worship] of the Name of the Lord of hosts, to Mount Zion [in Jerusalem]. Amplified Bible Version.
